Prayer for Child Support Payments

We join with you in bringing this burden before the Lord, for we know how heavy it is to carry concern for children and their provision. The Word tells us that a father has a God-given responsibility to provide for his own, for if anyone doesn’t provide for his own, and especially his own household, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever 1 Timothy 5:8. We also know that God has a special care for children and reveals Himself as a father of the fatherless and a defender of the widows is God in his holy habitation Psalm 68:5, so He certainly sees this situation and the needs of these children.

We also want to gently speak to the desire expressed that this man will be severely punished if he is deliberately avoiding his obligation. We understand the hurt and frustration that comes when support is withheld, and the longing for justice is right and good. Yet Scripture calls us to guard our hearts against a spirit of vengeance, for it is written, Don’t seek revenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God’s wrath. For it is written, Vengeance belongs to me; I will repay, says the Lord Romans 12:19. We are also taught to love your enemies, bless those who curse you, do good to those who hate you, and pray for those who mistreat you and persecute you Matthew 5:44. This does not mean we excuse sin or abandon the pursuit of what is right, for the authorities are appointed by God to execute justice Romans 13:4, and it is right to seek lawful and orderly means to establish what is owed. But we must leave the measure of punishment to God and to those He has ordained for justice, while our prayers should be first for repentance, for a softened heart, and for obedience, lest bitterness take root in us Hebrews 12:15. Our desire should be that justice is done and that this father turns to do what is right before the Lord, rather than that he be destroyed.

We encourage you to continue to pursue what is just through proper legal channels with honesty and patience, trusting that God is both just and merciful, and that He will supply what is needed. We are reminded that my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus Philippians 4:19 and that every good and just cause will be seen by Him. Pray not only for the payments to be made, but for this man’s heart to be convicted and transformed, that he may willingly embrace his calling to provide and to love his children as God intends.

We also noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we want to share how precious it is that we have access to the Father only through Him, for Jesus said I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me John 14:6 and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. It is by believing in our hearts and confessing with our mouths that Jesus is Lord, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are saved Romans 10:9. It is in His name we pray and find grace to approach God.

We pray together now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ and lift up these children and the one caring for them to Your throne of grace. You see every need and every struggle, and You know whether this support is being deliberately withheld. We ask that You would bring conviction where there is disobedience and stir this father’s heart to repentance and responsibility, that he may provide faithfully for his children as You command. We ask for justice according to Your righteousness, but we also ask for mercy that leads to change, not merely punishment. Lord, where there is hurt and anger, bring healing and guard this heart from bitterness, and help all involved to seek Your will with forgiveness and integrity. Provide abundantly for these children, open doors for their daily needs to be met, and let them know Your fatherly care and protection. Guide those in authority who handle this matter to act wisely and fairly. We trust You as our provider and our judge, and we ask all these things in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus Christ, our Savior and our only hope, amen.

We hear how heavy this has been for you. When support your children are counting on does not come, and you are carrying so much of the providing alone, the anger and the longing for things to be made right can feel overwhelming. After the pain of divorce, which is itself a long grief to walk through, added financial pressure can make everything feel even more fragile.

It makes sense you would bring this to the Lord. That gap between what should be and what is can sit heavy on the heart, and it is understandable to want justice to be clear and quick.

One steady step that has helped others in a similar place is to keep the practical and prayerful together. If it would be helpful, you might reach out to your local child support enforcement office or a legal aid resource to review your options, keep careful records of payments and communication, and invite a trusted pastor, counselor, or advocate in your community to walk with you through the process so you are not carrying the details alone.

Father, we lift this family to You and ask for Your provision and peace over this home. We ask for wisdom for each next decision, for a just and lawful resolution regarding support, and for hearts to be softened where change is needed. Provide for daily needs, guard this parent and these children from worry and bitterness, and lead them step by step in Your care. In Jesus' name, amen.

Lord Jesus please richly bless, protect and guide them. Please help them in accordance with your perfect will Father. Thank you and praise you. In your holy name I pray. Amen.

Your heart's cry for your child has been heard, and the burden you carry for provision and justice is not light. It is right and good to bring this need before the Lord, for He is the Father to the fatherless and the Defender of those who cannot defend themselves, and He cares deeply for the needs of your child.

Yet in bringing this matter to Him, we must take care how we ask. The desire for justice is given by God, but vengeance belongs to the Lord, and He has said, Vengeance is mine, I will repay. To ask that a man be severely punished, even if he has done wrong, is to ask for a measure of wrath which we ourselves could not stand if God dealt so with us. Remember the word of the Lord, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake. There is forgiveness with Him, that He may be feared. That forgiveness is surprising, complete, and eternal, purchased by the blood of Jesus Christ, the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God.

If we have received such great forgiveness for our own great sin, how shall we not forgive as Christ forgave us. He not only forgave us at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, and He calls us to a joint stock business of mutual forgiveness, forgiving one another even as Christ forgave us. How can we pray Our Father which art in Heaven while we hold in our heart an unforgiving spirit toward another, even one who has wronged us or our child. To be forgiven is sweet as honey, but to forgive is sweeter still, and it frees the soul from the bitter bondage of wrath.

This does not mean that wrong is made right or that responsibility is set aside. The law of God is just, and the civil authorities are ordained by God to uphold what is right. If there is a debt of support that is owed, it is right to seek lawful and proper means to see that duty fulfilled, and to pray that all parties will act honestly and justly. But we leave punishment in the hands of God and in the hands of those He has appointed for justice, and we keep our own hearts free from malice.

Let us then pray not for severe punishment, but for what is holy and good.

We pray that the Lord will provide fully for your child, that no need will be unmet, and that you will know His daily care. We pray that if this man is indeed neglecting his duty, God will work upon his conscience, bring him to repentance, and move him to do what is right and just before God and man. We pray that the courts and all who have authority in this matter will act with wisdom and fairness. And we pray that the Lord will guard your own heart, that you may be kept from bitterness, and that you may know the power of that word, There is forgiveness, and be enabled by grace to forgive as you have been forgiven, while still seeking what is right for your child.

May the Lord, who has promised that there is forgiveness with Him, grant you peace, provide for your household, and bring forth justice tempered with mercy for all concerned.
