A vision for global healthcare and entrepreneurship, conceived in prayer and laid before the throne of grace, is no small thing; yet every holy ambition must first bow at the pierced feet of Him who is the King of kings. You have quoted the promise, “I know the plans I have for you,” and let this anchor your soul, but remember that the surest plan of God for any man is to conform him to the image of His Son. All our building, all our leading, all our healing must spring from beholding the Lord Jesus in the beauty of His holiness. To see Him as He is, that is the beatific vision which transforms everything else; one brief glimpse of His marred but now exalted countenance would make the world’s tinsel fade and set our hearts ablaze with a passion that is not merely human. The vision He gives in the secret place of communion is always most practical: it sends a man into the marketplace, into the halls of industry, into the desperate wards where bodies and souls lie sick, with the drawn sword of the Spirit and the towel of a servant equally in hand.
Such a vision is by no means unreasonable. When a man is called to combine leadership, commerce, and the healing arts for the blessing of nations, we may say with holy confidence, “We have but to expect it, to believe it, to pray for it, to work for it, and we shall have it!” The God who rides through the myrtle grove in the night watches hears the intercession of His people, and He answers with good words and comfortable words. Yet be certain of this: that the vision will never be accomplished by mere industry or clever strategy. It must be a vision of the King. Your eyes shall see the King in all these endeavours, or your hands will soon grow weary. The most subtle danger is to see only the mountain of the Lord’s house exalted among the nations, the institution, the enterprise, the graduates sent forth, and to miss the glory of the Lord Himself filling the temple. Every value-driven business, every graduate empowered, every healthcare solution brought to a suffering people is to be a rung in the ladder by which men ascend to behold supreme excellence. If it be so, then the vision is a fact before it has yet unfolded, for faith is the substance of things hoped for.
Let your prayer-turned-enterprise be baptized into the deep, tender sympathy of the great High Priest who ever liveth to make intercession. Joshua the high priest stood before the angel in filthy garments, and Satan accused him; but the Lord rebuked the accuser and clothed His servant in fair mitre and festal robes. So shall there be many a moment when the founder’s heart is accused of ambition, and the hands seem soiled with a hundred failures. In that hour, the vision will be sustained not by a stubborn resolve but by the interceding Saviour. He will speak a word and the filthy garments shall be removed; integrity, excellence, and innovation will clothe the work as with a clean turban. I charge you, therefore, to seek that your vision be no mere entrepreneurial fancy but a thing born of the Spirit, nourished in secret with cries and tears, and pursued with such a trembling that you often break in, like the prophet, to cry, “Let them put a clean turban upon his head.” Only then will your leadership be guided aright.
The vision that truly prospers is the one that dares to believe the promises when all appearances mock them. The captivity of Zion seemed immovable, yet the word came that the mountain of the Lord’s house would be established in the top of the mountains and all nations flow unto it. So now, when the needs of nations are as vast as the sea, and the healthcare challenges threaten to devour whole peoples as a canker, lift up your eyes. The hand that held the red horse and the myrtle groves in Zechariah’s night watches is not shortened. That same Lord stands with His sword drawn in the midst of His people, ready to do exceeding abundantly above all we ask or think. Go forth in the strength He alone confers, and let your businesses be a prophecy of that coming day when the knowledge of the Lord shall cover the earth as the waters cover the sea.
But a word of caution is needful. This is not a vision to be seen by those who have never looked to Christ by faith or trusted His precious blood to cleanse them. The most charming prospect of earthly influence, the most satisfying scheme for human betterment, can never satisfy an immortal spirit; and it will leave a man at the last as a castle built on sand. I beseech you, see to it that your own soul is first washed and that your inmost heart is a throne for the King. Then shall your vision of worldwide service become a beatific vision in embryo, a true seeing of Him as He is, reflected in the faces of the sick you serve and the young minds you train. Then shall the work be no poor, dim pathway of duty but a rapturous, ecstatic anticipation of heaven itself, where the glorified King will astonish us forever.
Remember, too, the common blunder of the impatient Peter: in the ecstasy of a vision he cried, “Not so, Lord,” because he was in a hurry. Let not your haste to build and to scale what is good drown the quiet voice that says, “Rise, kill and eat,” even when the menu seems unclean. The Master may direct you through narrow straits and strange alliances that humble your pride and teach you to lean wholly upon the Intercessor. Take time to learn the interpretation of every providence, for God’s Word is never out of date, and the Holy Spirit will shed a sacred light upon the vision so that you see more than the first glow revealed.
In all labour, keep the personal reality bright: “We shall see Him as He is.” This is the positive nature of the sight that sustains through every fog. Here on the hilltops of business and service the mists will often play on the valley, and your eyes will see only the dim outline of His purpose; but there is a day coming, and it may break in upon your soul even now, when the mist shall roll away and you shall behold the King in His beauty. Press toward that. Labour in that hope. Let your global vision be but the hem of His garment, and let it draw men not to a system or a name, but to the blessed Person who alone can say, “I am the Lord that healeth thee.” The Lord answer you with good and comfortable words; the Lord go before you as the Breaker; and may the Spirit so possess your entire enterprise that you may truly help to make the vision a fact, while Christ has all the glory. Amen.
