Prayer for a family member

Disciple of Prayer
Good evening everyone, Me and my mother are asking for prayers for my brother. we declare psalms 91 over my brother. He is having a hard time in dealing with his emotions because he was hurt by a family member and several friends and he is having such a hard time getting over it and letting it go that he is not the same. Please pray for him. Thank you

We stand with you and your mother in prayer for your brother and we thank you for bringing him before the Lord with us. We hear the burden you carry seeing him so changed by the hurt he has received from family and friends, and we join you in declaring the protection and refuge of Psalm 91 over his life.

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High will rest in the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of Yahweh, He is my refuge and my fortress, my God, in whom I trust. Psalm 91:1-2

We are so encouraged that you are standing on this promise. God sees when His children are wounded by those closest to them and He does not leave them to carry that pain alone. The Word tells us Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. Psalm 34:18 and He heals the broken in heart, and binds up their wounds. Psalm 147:3. Your brother's struggle with his emotions and his difficulty in letting go is something God understands fully and wants to heal. We also remember the call to cast all our worries on Him, because He cares for us. 1 Peter 5:7 and the promise that when we bring everything to Him in prayer, the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard our hearts and our thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7

We want to gently encourage your brother and you from Scripture about the hurt he is holding. When we have been deeply wronged it is natural to hold onto the pain, yet God calls us to release bitterness so that we can be healed and not be overcome. Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32. This does not mean what was done to him was right or that trust is automatically restored, but it does mean giving the hurt and the right to repay into God's hands, for He says Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord. Romans 12:19. Forgiveness through Christ sets the wounded heart free to be made whole again.

We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus and we want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Jesus that we have access to the Father and that our prayers are heard. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. It is by believing in Jesus Christ, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and brought into the refuge of Psalm 91.

We pray together now for him.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ and we lift up this beloved brother to You. You see the wounds left by family and friends and the heaviness he carries in his emotions. We ask You to be his refuge and fortress, to cover him under Your wings and to let him rest in Your shadow. Heal his broken heart and bind up his wounds, Lord. Guard his heart and mind with Your peace that surpasses all understanding. Help him to cast every hurt and anxious thought on You and teach him by Your Holy Spirit to release bitterness and to forgive as You have forgiven us in Christ, so that he may be set free and restored to joy. Renew his mind and restore what the hurt has stolen, and let him know how deeply he is loved and cared for by You. We also lift up his mother and his sibling who are interceding for him, strengthen them and give them wisdom to love and support him in a way that points him to You. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, our hope and our healer, amen.

We encourage you to continue to declare Psalm 91 and other promises over him daily, to keep praying with thanksgiving, and to gently point him to the Word and to fellowship with other believers who can walk with him toward healing. God is faithful to complete the work He has begun.

We hear your heart for your brother and we are thankful you and your mother are lifting him together. It hurts to watch someone you love carry wounds from family and friends and feel like he can't shake them, and it is kind that you are not rushing him to just get over it.

One thing that has helped others we walk with is understanding that letting go often happens in two layers. There is a quiet decision not to keep chasing payback or holding the debt, which can come from a sense of duty before God, and then there is the slower softening of the heart where resentment and fear are gradually eased and replaced with more peace and compassion. That second part rarely happens quickly, especially when the mind keeps replaying what happened, and it can come and go with moods and reminders.

A gentle next step might be to keep giving him unpressured space to talk when he wants to, listening more than advising, and letting him know you are praying Psalm 91 over him because you love him, not to fix him. If he seems open, you could ask if he would like to talk with a trusted pastor or counselor for extra support alongside prayer.

Father, we bring this brother before You in Jesus name. You see the hurt he carries and how heavy it feels. Cover him with Your protection and peace, comfort his heart, and gently guide him toward healing in Your timing. Give his sister and mother wisdom and patience as they love him well. Amen.

Your request has been heard and we join with you and your mother in bringing your brother before the throne of grace. To be wounded by those nearest to us, by family and by friends, leaves a deep hurt, and it is no small thing when the heart cannot let it go and the whole life feels altered. The Lord knows this heaviness and He is tender toward those who are bruised in spirit.

We do pray with you and we gladly declare Psalm 91 over him, that the Lord Himself would be his refuge and fortress, his shelter in this time of trouble, and that under His wings he would find a place of safety until this storm has passed. We pray that the God of all comfort would quiet his emotions, steady his mind, and lift the weight that now presses upon him.

There is a word for him which we long for him to hear in his distress, that there is forgiveness with God. Not a forgiveness to be sought from man, but forgiveness that is with Him, ready to bestow, free and complete and eternal for Christ's sake. As it is written, I, even I, am He that blotteth out thy transgressions. When the heart is sore with the sins of others against us and with our own struggle to forgive, we are to look to the pattern set before us, even as Christ forgave you, so also do ye. The forgiveness we have received in Christ is the fountain from which our forgiveness of others must flow. It is not by our own strength that we let go of wrath, but by receiving first the pardon that is freely given through the blood of Jesus, and then by His Spirit learning to extend that same grace to those who have hurt us.

Healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction. The leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. His healing changes the life blood and makes the nature other than it was before. We pray that your brother would be brought into the presence of Jesus, hoping and expecting both forgiveness and healing from His hand, for power goes with His command and He makes whole.

We pray that the Lord would teach him to forgive as he has been forgiven, not to let the sun go down upon his wrath, and yet we know the Lord deals gently with the suffering limb. He does not stamp across the room, but steps with a light step for fear He should hurt the wounded place. May the Lord give him that gentle healing, day by day, and keep him from bitterness.

May God bless you both as you stand beside him in love and prayer. Continue to point him to Christ, to encourage him to go straight to God through Jesus Christ for pardon and peace, and to trust that what God has promised He will perform. We will keep your brother in prayer, that the Lord who is exalted would grant him present forgiveness, quietness of heart, and restoration, and that he would again know joy and strength in his walk with Christ.
