We come before the throne of grace with heavy hearts, lifting up this earnest plea for strength and deliverance. The struggle against the "old man"—the sinful nature that once held dominion—is real and relentless, but we know that in Christ, victory is assured. The apostle Paul himself cried out, *"For I don’t do the good that I desire to do; but the evil which I don’t desire, that I practice"* (Romans 7:19 WEB). Yet he also declared, *"Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ!"* (1 Corinthians 15:57 WEB). This is the hope we cling to—that through Christ, the power of sin is broken, and we are no longer slaves to its desires.
First, we must address the foundation of this request. If you have not yet surrendered your life to Jesus Christ, we urge you to do so now. There is no deliverance apart from Him, for *"there is salvation in no one else, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved"* (Acts 4:12 WEB). If you have already placed your faith in Him, we rejoice with you, for *"if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new"* (2 Corinthians 5:17 WEB). This is the truth that must anchor your heart.
The battle you describe is spiritual, and the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty through God to the pulling down of strongholds (2 Corinthians 10:4 WEB). The enemy seeks to deceive you into believing that deliverance is unattainable or that resistance is futile, but we rebuke that lie in the name of Jesus. The Word declares, *"No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it"* (1 Corinthians 10:13 WEB). You are not alone in this fight, and God has already provided the way out.
We also must address the phrase *"complete deliverance without resistance."* While we long for the day when sin will no longer have any hold on us, Scripture teaches that the Christian life is one of ongoing struggle and sanctification. Jesus Himself said, *"If anyone desires to come after me, let him deny himself, take up his cross daily, and follow me"* (Luke 9:23 WEB). Resistance is not a sign of failure but of spiritual life. The apostle Peter exhorts us, *"Be sober and self-controlled. Be watchful. Your adversary, the devil, walks around like a roaring lion, seeking whom he may devour. Withstand him steadfast in your faith"* (1 Peter 5:8-9 WEB). Deliverance is not passive; it requires active participation in the spiritual disciplines of prayer, Scripture reading, fellowship, and obedience.
We also caution against the subtle deception that deliverance means the absence of temptation. Even our Lord Jesus was tempted in every way, yet without sin (Hebrews 4:15 WEB). The goal is not to live without temptation but to live in such a way that temptation does not overcome us. This is why Paul urges, *"Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry"* (Colossians 3:5 WEB). The "old man" must be put off daily, and the "new man" put on, which is created in righteousness and holiness (Ephesians 4:22-24 WEB).
Now, let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. We lift up this dear one who is wrestling with the remnants of the old nature and the fear of falling away. Lord, You know the depths of this struggle, and You are acquainted with every temptation they face. We ask that You would strengthen them with Your might by Your Spirit in the inner person (Ephesians 3:16 WEB). Fill them with the knowledge of Your will in all spiritual wisdom and understanding, that they may walk worthily of You, fully pleasing You, bearing fruit in every good work (Colossians 1:9-10 WEB).
Father, we rebuke every lie of the enemy that whispers deliverance is impossible or that resistance is in vain. We declare that Your Word is true: *"He who began a good work in you will complete it until the day of Jesus Christ"* (Philippians 1:6 WEB). We pray that You would reveal to them the fullness of their identity in Christ—that they are no longer slaves to sin but have been set free (Romans 6:6-7 WEB). Help them to reckon themselves dead to sin and alive to You in Christ Jesus (Romans 6:11 WEB).
Lord, we ask that You would break every chain of bondage that seeks to hold them captive. Whether it is a struggle with lust, anger, fear, addiction, or any other sin, we declare that the blood of Jesus has already purchased their freedom. We pray that You would fill them with Your Holy Spirit, who empowers them to live in victory (Galatians 5:16 WEB). Teach them to walk in the Spirit so that they will not fulfill the lusts of the flesh.
Father, we also pray for a deep hunger and thirst for Your Word. Let Your truth be a lamp to their feet and a light to their path (Psalm 119:105 WEB). Surround them with godly fellowship—believers who will encourage them, pray for them, and hold them accountable. Protect them from isolation, for the enemy seeks to devour those who are alone (Ecclesiastes 4:12 WEB).
Above all, Lord, we pray that they would fix their eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of their faith (Hebrews 12:2 WEB). Remind them that this battle is not against flesh and blood but against spiritual forces of wickedness (Ephesians 6:12 WEB). Clothe them with the full armor of God so that they may stand firm against the schemes of the devil (Ephesians 6:11 WEB). Let them take up the shield of faith, the helmet of salvation, the sword of the Spirit, and the belt of truth, knowing that You have already won the victory.
We also pray for a heart of repentance and humility. If there are areas of unconfessed sin, reveal them, Lord, and grant them the grace to turn away and seek Your forgiveness. Your Word promises, *"If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness"* (1 John 1:9 WEB). Let them experience the freedom that comes from walking in the light as You are in the light (1 John 1:7 WEB).
Finally, Father, we pray for perseverance. Strengthen them to endure to the end, knowing that *"he who endures to the end will be saved"* (Matthew 24:13 WEB). Remind them that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory that will be revealed toward us (Romans 8:18 WEB). Fill them with hope, joy, and peace as they trust in You (Romans 15:13 WEB).
We thank You, Lord, that You are faithful and that You will complete the work You have begun. We declare that this one is more than a conqueror through Christ who loved them (Romans 8:37 WEB). May they walk in the fullness of Your victory, not just today but for all eternity. In the precious and powerful name of Jesus Christ, we pray. Amen.
