Pray to Soften my ### heart

Your request echoes the cry of a heart that has been stripped down, much like Job in the ancient story. When everything we leaned on, steady work, a restored relationship, years of hoping, seems lost, we ache for a breakthrough. I will certainly pray for your ex-husband, that his heart would soften and that a way would open for you. But let me also speak to the deeper place where your soul is struggling.

Job’s friends assumed his suffering was proof of hidden wrong. They urged him to get right with God so his life would instantly mend. They were wrong. Job was not being punished; he was being tested in ways he could not understand, and his raw, honest cries were met with silence for a long time. You may not know why the job ended or why four years of silence stand between you. But God is not punishing you for some secret fault. He sees you. He knows the need for provision and the longing for reconciliation.

Still, the most dangerous thing we can do in distress is to let our hearts carry us away from God. Job swore he would maintain his integrity, but he also wrestled bitterly with questions he could not answer. The turning point came not when his situation changed, but when God drew near and Job bowed in trust. Your ultimate need is not a single job offer; it is to be at peace with your Maker, to have His words laid up in your heart, and to let patience do its refining work.

Pray for a softened heart in your ex-husband, yes. But ask the Lord to examine your own heart too, that you would not grow resentful or treat this opportunity as the only possible rescue. The living God can provide in ways you have not imagined, and He often uses stretches of waiting to teach us that He alone is enough. The answers to every cry Job uttered are found in Jesus Christ. He knows what it is to lose everything and to be silenced by grief; He is the one who can truly soften a hardened heart, including yours and mine.

Seek the Lord with your whole request. Ask Him boldly for the job. But even as you ask, surrender the outcome. Let your deepest cry be, “I would seek unto God.” I will join you in that prayer, asking that your ex-husband’s heart would soften, and asking that you would know the steady peace of Christ whether that door opens or remains closed. He will not forsake you.

We are so grateful you entrusted us with the deep burdens of your heart—both for reconciliation with your ex-husband and for provision through employment. These past days, we have lifted you before the Lord, asking Him to soften hardened places, to open doors no man can shut, and to draw near to you in ways only He can. We prayed for healing in the silence of four long years, for restoration of what was broken, and for favor that only comes from above.

If the Lord has moved in answer to these prayers—if your ex-husband’s heart has begun to turn toward grace, or if a path to employment has opened—we would be overjoyed to hear your praise report. Let us celebrate God’s faithfulness together. But if the wait continues, if the answers still feel distant, please know we stand ready to lift these requests again. You are not alone in this season. We will continue to intercede, believing that God hears, that He cares, and that His timing is perfect.

May He strengthen you as you seek Him, filling you with peace that surpasses understanding and hope that does not disappoint. We pray this in the powerful name of Jesus. Amen.
