Pray to quit drinking

Dear friends, please keep me in your prayers. I am asking God to give me the strength, courage, and self-control to quit drinking and to overcome this struggle. Please pray that He will remove every temptation, heal my mind and body, and fill my life with His peace and purpose. Your prayers and encouragement mean a lot to me. Prayer Focus: God, Thank You for loving me. Thank You for loving me, Jesus. God, I ask You in Jesus’ name please bless me with everything that I stand in need of and everything You want me to have. God bless me to prosper, walk in excellent health, and never stop growing in the love, grace, wisdom, and knowledge of Christ Jesus. God bless me to know You in truth, fall in love with You with all my heart, mind, soul, body, and strength and never fall out of love with You. God, bless me to have an ever growing closer stronger, more intimate relationship with You. Bless me with the love, desire, strength, and the spirit of obedience to always delight myself in You, seek first Your kingdom, Your righteousness, and to always respect and obey You. Bless me to know You, so that I can trust You with all my heart, acknowledge You in all my ways, and lean not to my own understanding. Bless me with knowledge, wisdom, and understanding in all You have called me to do.

We stand with you in this battle, lifting your request to the Lord with hearts full of compassion and faith. The struggle with alcohol is a heavy burden, but we know that our God is greater than any addiction, and His strength is made perfect in our weakness. Scripture reminds us in 1 Corinthians 10:13, "No temptation has taken you except what is common to man. God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted above what you are able, but will with the temptation also make the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it." The Lord has already provided a way out, we pray you walk in it with boldness and trust.

We also declare over you the truth of Philippians 4:13, "I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me." This is not a battle you fight alone; the Holy Spirit is your Helper, your Comforter, and your Guide. We rebuke the spirit of addiction in the name of Jesus, commanding it to loose its grip on your life. We pray for the healing of your mind and body, that every cell and thought would align with God’s perfect will for your life. May the peace of Christ, which surpasses all understanding, guard your heart and mind as you surrender this struggle to Him.

We encourage you to immerse yourself in God’s Word, for it is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword (Hebrews 4:12). Fill your mind with truth, and let it renew your thoughts and actions. Seek accountability within the body of Christ, find brothers or sisters in the faith who can walk alongside you, pray with you, and encourage you when temptation arises. Remember, Proverbs 27:17 tells us, "Iron sharpens iron; so a man sharpens his friend’s countenance." You do not have to face this alone.

Father God, we come before You now on behalf of our brother/sister in Christ. We ask that You break every chain of addiction in their life. Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, granting them the fruit of self-control, which is a gift from You (Galatians 5:22-23). Heal their body from the effects of alcohol and restore their mind to wholeness. Remove every temptation and replace it with Your peace and purpose. Lord, we ask that You surround them with Your presence, that they may feel Your love and strength in every moment of weakness. Give them the courage to resist the enemy’s lies and the faith to believe in Your power to set them free. We declare that they are more than conquerors through Christ Jesus (Romans 8:37), and we stand in agreement with them for complete victory. In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

Do not grow weary in this fight, for the Lord is fighting for you. Every step you take toward sobriety is a step toward freedom, and we rejoice with you in the progress you make. Keep your eyes fixed on Jesus, the author and perfecter of your faith (Hebrews 12:2), and trust that He who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion (Philippians 1:6). You are deeply loved, and your life has purpose, walk in that truth today.

We have seen so many people walk this same road and find freedom, not because they were strong enough on their own, but because they learned to lean on God's strength day by day, sometimes hour by hour.

One practical step that often helps is connecting with others who understand this battle from the inside. A group like Celebrate Recovery or Alcoholics Anonymous puts you alongside people who know exactly what you're feeling, no explanations needed, no judgment, just honest support and a path forward that has worked for countless people. It's also wise to talk with a doctor about your drinking. They can help you stop safely and assess what your body needs to heal. There's no shame in getting medical help; God gave us wisdom and medicine for exactly these moments.

Whatever you do next, please don't try to gut this out alone. Isolation is where addiction grows strongest. Let a trusted friend, a pastor, or a support group into the real fight, the one that happens in the quiet moments when temptation whispers.

Lord Jesus, we lift up our friend right now. You see the whole battle, the weariness, the regrets, the deep desire to be free. Pour out strength in place of weakness, and steady courage when the cravings come. Surround this precious life with wise, kind people who will walk this path faithfully. Heal what drinking has damaged in mind and body, and fill every hollow place with Your peace and Your purpose. In Your mighty name, Amen.

It is no small mercy that your soul longs to be free from the dominion of strong drink, for the leaves of the tree are for the healing of the nations, and the least thing about Christ is healing. His very shadow cast upon the will can break the most entrenched habit, changing the life blood and making the nature other than it was before. Cry to Him who binds up the brokenhearted, for He alone can heal both mind and body, and fill the void with His own peace and purpose.

Yet take heed: the prayer “Lead us not into temptation” must be matched by a holy resolve never to go into it. The man who prays that and then walks straight to the place of peril is a liar before God. Shun the haunts of gaiety, the companions who pull you down, the very smell of the cup. Self-distrust is your safety, for self-reliance is a fatal delusion. It is a great mercy to tremble when you think you stand, lest you fall. Do not bitterly condemn yourself, but pray again and again, “Lead us not into temptation.”

Forgiveness and healing are set in happy conjunction. When the Lord Jesus dealt with the palsied man, He first spoke pardon: “Son, be of good cheer; your sins are forgiven you.” Pardon and healing were one. Seek first the cleansing blood of Christ, and as you receive forgiveness, the plague of your heart will begin to lose its power. Wonder not if recovery seems slow. As you grow a little stronger, and a little stronger, acknowledge in each increase of strength that the Lord has a new claim on your affection. He has promised, “I will strengthen them in the Lord,” and His word cannot fail.

Calvary is the place for healing balm. The sun of righteousness has risen with healing in His wings. Come then to Jesus, who is mighty to save. Turn from every self-righteous hope, for the proud heart knows nothing of the cure. Lie before Him, expecting both pardon and healing. His healing leaves change the very spirit, making you hate the sin that once enslaved you. So shall you one day join the shining company in heaven, fresh as a new-born child, owing all to the healing power of the Lamb.

There is no temptation overtaking you that is not common to mankind. God is faithful, and He will not allow you to be tested beyond your strength, but with the temptation He will also provide the way of escape, so that you may be able to endure it. Do not imagine your struggle is strange or beyond His help. Every saint has passed through the fire, and it is in such perils that their virtue shone brightest.

Yet know this: overcoming drink is not a matter of mere willpower. Ask God not only to remove the temptation but to give you a sober mind that loves virtue for its own beauty. The one who practices self-control only for a reward will never be truly self-controlled, because he does not cherish temperance itself. Still, because of our weakness, God accepts even that, so do not be ashamed to pray as you can. But strive to kindle a genuine affection for what is good.

Consider also that this trial may be a medicine for your soul. Many have found salvation in their very humiliations. The prophet said, “It is good for me that You humbled me.” And Paul had a thorn in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to buffet him, and when he begged for its removal, God denied him so a greater work might be done. Do not be impatient or think yourself the only unhappy one; others bear grief from family, loss, and countless causes. Your sorrow is shared, and by bearing it nobly you may be healed and become a support to the saints.

Flee not only the act but the occasions and thoughts that lead to drunkenness. Fortify yourself with constant hearing of the word, receiving it not as the speech of men but as God Himself exhorting you. And do not neglect the mystical supper of the Lord; approach it with careful preparation, for it is healing, not despite.

Remember, what comes from the heart can suffocate the soul far worse than what enters the body. So fix your eyes on the compassion of Christ, who saw the multitude hungry and would not send them away fasting, lest they faint on the way. He will not let you faint; He will feed you with the true bread. Only be diligent, and do not let discouragement make you draw back. The race demands endurance, not speed alone, and the very struggle, when offered to Him, becomes the path to peace.

Every time the craving rises, you are standing at a fork in the road that every person faces. Temptation itself is not the sin; it is the testing of your faith, and that testing has a purpose. It works patience deep into your soul, teaching you to wait on God rather than reach for immediate relief. The draw you feel toward a drink is the pull of the flesh promising a shortcut, a quick escape without the cross, without the daily dying to self. But you are not left alone to fight that pull.

Sin gains its mastery when desire conceives and gives birth to action. A man is drawn away by his own lust and enticed, and when he yields, it brings forth death. That distorted judgment, that blurred vision you know so well, is exactly why the enemy pushes this shortcut. But Scripture holds a better way. The Lord is the strength of your life, your light and your salvation. When you look to yourself for power, the supply runs out quickly. When you look to Him in honest desperation, His strength becomes your portion and it has no limit.

You mentioned courage and self-control. These grow as you learn the secret of where real strength lies. It is not found in new ropes, human techniques, or sheer willpower. Strength is found in a life separated unto God, crucified with Christ, dead to the old master, and alive to Him. There is no need to be ruled by the flesh any longer. The Spirit of God does not merely patch up the old nature; He gives you a new power to respond differently the moment the temptation fires. Where you once reacted before you could even think, the Spirit now gives you a choice. You can declare, “I am dead to that. I do not have to yield.”

God allows these testings to show you your own weakness so that you stop trusting yourself and start relying fully on Him. When you discover you have no control, that is the very place where He meets you with deliverance. You do not have to orchestrate your own victory; He removes the taste, He restores the mind, and He fills the hollow places with His peace and purpose. Do not be afraid. He will give strength to His people; He will bless His people with peace. As you walk with Him, day by day, He will keep you.
