Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The threat of disease dangling before you is a chain rattled by the enemy, not a decree from heaven. You see, the call of God does not come with such extortion. When He called Matthew from his tax booth, the man did not haggle or say, "Let me first see if this calling is a deceit." He left his gain and his old life straightway, exhibiting a mind prepared for all things. The obedience that springs from faith is immediate and unforced; it does not wait to be flogged forward by curses of fever or plague. A demand that forces you to move from fear, threatening calamity if you refuse, bears no resemblance to the voice of the Good Shepherd. So do not pay the enemy the compliment of believing his threats possess any real substance. What power has a shadow to bind flesh and blood?
The true binding that needs your attention is not some declared pact hanging over your head, but the binding of your own heart. We are not in physical chains, but there are yet other bonds. Bind your heart and mind with the truth. The labor is great, I will not lie to you, for it requires a deliberate will to alter the turn of mind, to tear up error by the roots, and to plant the truth in its place. When your thoughts run wild toward those old foolish words, do not sit and parley with them as if they had authority. Seek the Lord as one seeks lost gold, with concentrated mind, enquiring of the Scriptures, traveling from the distraction of your home into the chamber of prayer. A candid heart, free from vice and with uncorrupted judgment, is easily persuaded by the words of truth and will not be offended by the struggle. That pull you feel to repeat the folly is the very thing you must fight by filling your mind with something greater, that you may be perfectly joined together in the same mind and the same judgment with Christ.
Do not say within yourself, "I have but one talent, I am too weak and my mind is too clouded to resist." This is a false humility that leads to sloth. You are not poorer than the widow with her two mites, nor more uninstructed than the unlearned fishermen who turned the world upside down. Contribute the diligence of which you are capable. Bring your troubled mind to God and leave it there in prayer. Nothing is so pleasing to Him as to live for the common advantage, and your peace and stability are for the advantage of the whole body. Seek that harmony of mind which is with Christ, and you will find that the false decrees of darkness shatter against it. The enemy pushes you to declare the chains unbreakable, but this is the final gasp of a liar. The One Lawgiver has established the covenant of freedom. Stand in that, and the spectral bonds will prove to be no bonds at all.
