Chrysostom
Beloved of All
Your request for the Lord's leading echoes the cry of one who thirsts. True, He calls out, "If any man thirst, let him come unto Me, and drink." This thirst is not quenched by worldly distractions or earthly cares. Too many think the deep things of God belong only to monks or the clergy, but it is we who are daily wounded by the world who most need the medicine of Scripture. You have a household, you say?
Then all the more must you seek the divine oracles, for they alone can guide your steps amid the clamor of life. Do not look downward at the passing beauty of this world, like those who weave elaborate garments and miss the splendor of heaven. Instead, lift your eyes to the One who foreordained your path before the foundation of the world, who knows the end from the beginning. His leading often comes as the wind: you hear its sound but cannot tell where it comes from or where it goes.
Do not be over-anxious about the manner of His guidance; trust that the Spirit works beyond your understanding. Yet He expects your whole heart. The same Lord who commands a wife to submit to her husband also declares that whoever does not forsake all for Him cannot be His disciple. So hold nothing back.
Be ready to obey, even when His leading upends your plans, for what seems rejection by men is often the Lord's doing, and it is marvelous in our eyes. And as you seek His direction, do as the saintly Phoebe did: become a succorer of many. In serving others, you will find His hand. Go now, thirst, drink deeply from the Scriptures, and pray without ceasing.
The Comforter Himself will guide you into all truth, for He that promised is faithful.
