Faithful Servant
Who Is The “WE” Here? If you have decided to take up Singapore citizenship, it is a fundamental breach of your oath of allegiance to our country for you to have divided loyalties and to still display the flag of your former country. If you are a PR or holding some form of employment permit, you are the guest in our country and it is improper to display the flag of your own country when you are a guest in a foreign land. That is the problem when mass immigration has gotten out of control. After 60 years of independence, we do not have a population with a strong Singapore identity. We have a patchwork quilt of a society with divided loyalties. We never had such problems or phenomena in the 80s and the first half of the 90s.

We understand the deep concern and frustration expressed in this request, as it touches on matters of national identity, loyalty, and the cultural fabric of a society. The Bible calls us to honor and submit to the governing authorities, as they are established by God for order and justice. Romans 13:1-2 reminds us, *"Let every soul be in subjection to the higher authorities, for there is no authority except from God, and those who exist are ordained by God. Therefore he who resists the authority withstands the ordinance of God; and those who withstand will receive judgment to themselves."* This principle applies to both citizens and those residing as guests in a nation, as we are all called to live peaceably and respectfully under the laws of the land.

The issue of divided loyalties is a serious one, not just in civic matters but in our spiritual lives as well. Jesus Himself declared in Matthew 6:24, *"No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other."* While this verse speaks to our devotion to God over worldly concerns, the principle extends to our earthly allegiances as well. If one has sworn an oath of allegiance to a country, that commitment should be honored wholeheartedly, just as our commitment to Christ must be undivided. For those who are guests in a nation, respecting the customs and laws of that land is a reflection of the biblical call to show honor and live as peacemakers (1 Peter 2:17, Romans 12:18).

The broader concern here—about the erosion of a shared national identity—is one that many societies face in an age of mass migration and globalization. While the Bible celebrates the diversity of God’s creation and the unity of believers from every nation (Revelation 7:9), it also emphasizes the importance of order, unity, and shared values within communities. In Nehemiah 2:17-18, we see the people of Israel uniting to rebuild the walls of Jerusalem, saying, *"Let us build up the wall of Jerusalem, that we won’t be disgraced."* Their shared identity and purpose were rooted in their covenant with God and their commitment to one another. Similarly, a nation thrives when its people share a common vision, respect for its laws, and a willingness to integrate rather than remain divided.

However, we must also approach this issue with compassion and wisdom. The Bible calls us to love our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31), including those who are foreigners or sojourners among us. Leviticus 19:34 instructs, *"The foreigner who resides with you shall be to you as the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself; for you lived as foreigners in the land of Egypt."* This does not negate the importance of national identity but reminds us to treat others with kindness and fairness, even as we uphold the values and laws that bind a society together.

As we pray over this situation, we ask God to bring wisdom to leaders and citizens alike, that they may foster a society where loyalty, respect, and unity are upheld without compromising the dignity of every individual. We also pray for those who may struggle with divided loyalties, that God would guide them to honor their commitments—whether to a nation, a community, or ultimately to Him.

**Our Prayer:**
Heavenly Father, we lift up this nation of ### before You, asking for Your wisdom and guidance to prevail in matters of identity, loyalty, and unity. Lord, You are the one who establishes borders and nations (Acts 17:26), and we pray that You would help its people to honor the commitments they have made—whether as citizens or as guests in this land. Father, where there is division, bring reconciliation. Where there is confusion, bring clarity. Where there is a lack of respect for the laws and values that sustain a society, convict hearts and turn them toward righteousness.

We pray for those in authority, that You would grant them discernment to govern with justice and fairness, fostering a society where all people—regardless of their background—can live in peace while upholding the shared identity that strengthens a nation. Help each person to examine their own heart, that their loyalties may be undivided, just as You call us to serve You with all our heart, soul, and mind (Matthew 22:37).

For those who feel like strangers in a foreign land, we ask that You comfort them and provide for their needs, while also teaching them to respect the customs and laws of the place where You have sovereignly placed them. May Your church in ### be a light, demonstrating the unity and love that transcends earthly divisions, even as we uphold the truth of Your Word.

We rebuked any spirit of division, confusion, or disrespect that seeks to undermine the peace and stability of this nation. By the power of the name of Jesus Christ, we declare that loyalty, integrity, and godly wisdom will prevail. May ### be a nation that honors You, where people of all backgrounds can live in harmony while upholding the values that reflect Your righteousness.

In the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, we pray. Amen.

We're here with you, concerned about the erosion of a shared national identity. We've seen the love and unity among Singaporeans in the past, and we long to see that spirit restored. Let's remember, God is the one who ordains nations and authorities (Acts 17:26). Let's pray for our leaders, that they would govern with wisdom and fairness, fostering a society where everyone can live in peace and unity.

For those struggling with divided loyalties, let's pray for clarity and conviction. God, help them to honor their commitments, whether to a nation or to You. For those who feel like strangers, let's pray for comfort and provision, and that they would respect the customs and laws of their new home.

Let's also pray for the church in Singapore, that it would be a beacon of unity and love, demonstrating the power of the Gospel to transcend earthly divisions. Help us to uphold the truth of Your Word while loving our neighbors as ourselves (Mark 12:31).

In Jesus' name, we pray. Amen.

I prayed that God in Jesus' name will answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. Thank You Jesus!!!
