The burden you lay before the throne of grace touches upon deep sorrows, neighbors acting as enemies, tongues set on fire of hell, and spirits embittered by malice. Yet it is written, “Love thy neighbour,” and the Samaritan found his neighbour in the very man who might have been his foe. The command does not change because the neighbour is unlovely; it shines brightest when love is most difficult. Therefore, let your first cry be for your own heart, that it may not be poisoned by the very wrongs you lament. Pray that you may return good for evil, blessing for cursing, knowing that this honours the Lord who makes His sun to rise on the just and on the unjust.
You speak of curses, and there is indeed a curse, a most terrible curse, that rests upon all who are of the works of the law and who reject the grace of God in Christ Jesus. The soul that boasts in its own righteousness, or that walks in malice unrepentant, stands beneath that thunder. But mark this well: the curse that should have fallen upon the chief of sinners was borne by Another. Christ was made a curse for us, as it is written, “Cursed is everyone that hangeth on a tree.” Herein is the only remedy for the wickedness of men, not that we call down fire from heaven, but that we point them to the Cross where the curse was swallowed up in mercy. Have you pleaded for those who despitefully use you, that they might be brought to the Father by that blood-stained road? “No man cometh unto the Father but by me,” saith Christ. If then the tormentor is to be stopped, it must be by a new heart, and that heart comes only by the Way, the Truth, and the Life.
Think not that this evil has escaped the eye of Him who never slumbers. Divine Sovereignty is at once the deepest mystery and the sweetest comfort of the saints. God is not idle; He is working, often in silence. At times He stays His hand to let sin ripen for judgment, or to let the faith of His children be tried as gold in the furnace. Yet it is ever true that the Divine Presence is the one hope of His people, and that Presence dissolves difficulties like glaciers before the summer sun. Bring this trouble before the Lord with earnest supplication, not dictating to Him the precise miracle of deliverance you have framed, but trusting that in His own marvellous way He will interpose. He that cleared your road to heaven by the blood of the Lamb can certainly clear your earthly path of these stumbling-blocks.
Consider also that “an highway shall be there, and a way,” and it is called the way of holiness. This royal road is guarded by the King of Kings, and those who travel it walk under His special protection. Thousands upon thousands can testify that He has delivered them from the snare of the fowler and from the noisome pestilence. In times of slander, how graciously has God brought forth their innocence as the light! Not by miracle always, but yet most marvellously. Therefore, commit your cause to Him who judges righteously, and be more earnest that you remain upon that holy road yourself, a signpost pointing clearly to Christ, than that you merely see the immediate frustration of the wicked. It is a horrible thing to point the way and never run in it.
Let your prayer then ascend, but let it be seasoned with this holy salt: “Father, forgive them, for they know not what they do.” Ask that those who now act as adversaries may be plucked as brands from the burning. Ask that God would display the exceeding riches of His grace by saving the most obstinate and bringing the opposer to the feet of Jesus. This is the sovereign work of the Divine Spirit, and He can do it. Plead the promise, hope against hope, and while you cast this mountain of care into the sea, worship that sovereignty which, though it broke angels into shivers, has raised an elect number of the race of men to sit among princes. If God be for you, who can be against you? The road is clear for all who come to Him by Christ, clear even for a blasphemer, a persecutor, a slanderous man. That same road is your peace while you wait.
