The prayer for peace in a chaotic place is a right desire, yet let us beware of that false peace which cries "Peace, peace, when there is no peace." There can be no true, lasting peace in that company, or in any heart, while sin is coddled and truth is trampled. You speak of a man spreading lies about his coworkers, claiming they slept. If there is no truth in his mouth, his own heart has no true peace with God. Have you never used false words? A peace that is at ease with slander and deceit is a peace more precious than gold to the devil, but worse than worthless to the soul. Such a man's peace is a mere writing on the sand, a false one, drawn perhaps from the stagnant pool of superstition or unbelief. The peace that we should desire is, first of all, a blessing from God, an unalloyed blessing that brings no sorrow with it.
The remedy is not found merely in altering outward circumstances but in a right estimate of oneself before the Almighty. You ask for humility from these supervisors and managers, and this is the very root of the matter. Humility is to make a right estimate of oneself. It is not the pretense of the face, but a genuine work of the heart. When a man truly sees himself, he will no longer boast or spread lies, for he will be conscious of his own great pride and unworthiness. Labor, then, to serve the Lord with all humility of mind, and pray that this same Spirit would fall upon those who now slander and harass. Prostrate before the Throne is the proper attitude; in humility is our strength for supplication. Remember, the man who is most humble is often most conscious of his own lack of it.
What then of the innocent coworkers? Their peace must not depend on the cessation of the storm around them. The blood of Jesus whispers peace within. True spiritual peace is God’s own child; it is the unruffled calm of the Eternal Son, given to those whose minds are stayed on Him. To do the will of Jesus, this is rest, even with sorrows surging round. Let them commit their cause to Him who judges righteously. The honourable path is to bear your sorrow with Him and then see what peace, what perfect peace, you will enjoy. Their humility will not stab at their faith, for the two go hand in hand to heaven.
It is a fearful thing if the managers continue in stalking, slandering, and lying, for if a man lives unjust, he will miss all true rest of heart. Their actions betray a fatal secret: they have no peace with God, for it is written, "There is no peace, says my God, to the wicked." Many sinners coming to Christ would get relief far more quickly if it were not for the ill lives of false professors. Pray that their false peace is shattered, that they are stranded in self-despair, and thus driven to the only true foundation. True peace with God is the fountain, and peace with conscience is the crystal stream. We seek not a peace that leaves men in their sins, but the peace that Christ bought with His blood, a peace that makes them hate sin with all their heart. It is enough. Earth's struggles soon shall cease, and Jesus calls us to Heaven's perfect peace. Until then, look unto Him.
