Pray for ongoing struggle with depression and motivation

Ghoiroth

Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for me. I have been a faithful servant of Jesus for over 40 years. Through out I have been occasionally struggling with a form of depression. I want deliverance from this difficult situation. Thank you

We hear your cry for help, dear brother in Christ, and we stand with you in prayer, lifting you up before our Heavenly Father. Forty years of faithful service to Jesus is a testament to your love for Him, and we know that He sees your struggle and holds you close in this season of heaviness. Depression is a very real battle, but it does not define you, your identity is rooted in Christ, who has already overcome the world (John 16:33).

The Scriptures remind us that even the righteous face trials, but God is near to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). We rebuke the spirit of despair in Jesus’ name, for He came that you might have life and have it abundantly (John 10:10). This battle is not yours alone; the Lord is your strength, and He will sustain you (Isaiah 41:10).

We also encourage you to seek godly counsel and support from fellow believers, as iron sharpens iron (Proverbs 27:17). Sometimes, the body of Christ is the very hands and feet of Jesus in our lives, providing encouragement and accountability. If this depression has led to isolation, we pray that God would break those chains and draw you into deeper fellowship with His people.

Let us pray together:

Heavenly Father, we come before You on behalf of our dear brother, who has served You faithfully for decades. Lord, we ask that You would lift the weight of depression from his heart and mind. Fill him with Your peace that surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7) and renew his strength like the eagle’s (Isaiah 40:31). Father, we rebuke every lie of the enemy that seeks to steal his joy and motivation. Remind him of Your unfailing love and the hope he has in Christ. Surround him with Your presence, Lord, and let him feel Your arms of comfort. Provide him with godly community and wisdom to seek help if needed. We declare that he is more than a conqueror through Christ who loves him (Romans 8:37). In Jesus’ mighty name, we pray. Amen.

Remember, dear brother, that your labor in the Lord is never in vain (1 Corinthians 15:58). Even on the days when motivation feels distant, God is working in you and through you. Keep pressing into Him, for He is faithful to complete the good work He began in you (Philippians 1:6). You are not forgotten, and your struggle is seen by the One who bore all our sorrows (Isaiah 53:4). May He fill you with fresh hope and purpose as you continue to walk with Him.

We hear the weight in your words, forty years of faithful walking with Jesus, and yet this familiar struggle still returns. That kind of persistence can be deeply wearying, and we're sorry you're carrying it again.

Sometimes what makes depression so disorienting, especially for long-time believers, is the gap between what we know is true and what we're able to feel in a given season. That gap isn't a failure of faith. The Psalms are full of people who loved God deeply and still cried out from dark places. You're in honest company.

You mentioned both depression and motivation, and they often feed each other. Depression drains the energy to act, and then the lack of action reinforces a sense of being stuck. If this has been a recurring pattern over four decades, it may be worth inviting outside help alongside prayer, not because prayer isn't enough, but because God often works through those with training to help us untangle what's persisted. A wise pastor or a Christian counselor could walk with you through this current stretch and help you understand what tends to reignite the struggle.

For now, we're simply grateful you reached out. That took effort, especially when motivation is low.

Lord Jesus, You know this child of Yours by name and You've walked with them through every valley these forty years. Meet them now where the darkness feels heavy again. Grant them enough energy for today, nothing more is required, and surround them with people who can carry hope when theirs runs thin. Bring skilled help into their path and give them courage to accept it. We ask for healing in Your way and Your timing. In Your name, Amen.

A long and faithful walk with the Lord is no stranger to the valley you now tread. Egypt may very fairly represent those states of sorrow and sadness, depression and oppression, into which God’s people come far too frequently. If you are like the preacher, you are by no means a stranger to inward sinking. Yet mark this well: the healthy soul is not the one that never knows the mists of melancholy, but the one that, even in the gloom, clings to the immutable promise. “I am the Lord, I change not.” If some temporary depression of spirit should just now overwhelm you, believe that if He hides His face, He still loves you.

You have prayed long for deliverance; you feel worse after you have prayed. So it was with that woman of great faith, and still her suit prevailed. The morning comes. It is not for long that Christ’s mercy can be restrained. He must break forth. The clock of mercy struck in Heaven the hour and moment of deliverance before you ever drew breath, for the eternal purpose decreed it. What has He begun in you these forty years if not a work that He will most certainly perform until the day of Christ? That doctrine stands bound up with the gospel itself. Take a ticket all the way through; get a salvation which covers all risks.

That life imparted to you at regeneration is immortal and eternal. The Spirit abides with you forever. When a man stands in water, the flood might drown him, but as long as his head remains above water, the stream cannot drown his feet. “They shall never perish.” This is not mere endurance in misery, but perseverance in holiness. “They shall not depart from me.” You have a deliverance from the archers of ecclesiastical discord; you have peace within your borders. So too shall He deliver you from the pit of despond. Nobody would have thought of that way of deliverance, through a ransom, if God had not invented it. He has not only invented a way, He has found a ransom. Let this truth pour its sovereign balm into your heart: you are not left to forge your own deliverance from this darkness.

Let not the arrow of accusation strike you, whispering that God’s ear is shut. That thought leads to sin. He who loved you without beginning will not make an end of loving you now. “He delights in mercy.” His compassions fail not; therefore you are not consumed. The righteous shall hold on his way, and he that hath clean hands shall wax stronger and stronger. Go, speak no more to the pitiless winds of your own feelings, but muse upon His person, think upon His wounds, long for His advent, and so drink of the water of the well of Bethlehem. Soon you shall lift up your head.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your forty years of faithful service are well known to the Lord, yet He permits this thorn to remain, not from neglect, but to perfect your strength in weakness. When the righteous are near the end of their struggles, God often intensifies the conflict, as He did with Abraham, so that the final reward becomes more glorious. Do not seek your rest here, for our hope is laid up in heaven, secured by the word of truth. The long-suffering born of love is a great and impenetrable soul, quenching every spark of trouble that falls upon it, leaving it undisturbed. This trial itself can become a short and easy path of deliverance if you turn it inward: search your heart for any root of unforgiveness, for to forgive others releases a heavy burden without toil. If Paul was delivered from the lion's mouth, He will deliver you from every evil work, not always by removing the affliction but by supplying grace to endure. Stand firm, for He who was made a little lower than the angels, crowned with glory and honor through suffering, walks with you, and the end of these conflicts is near.

Forty years of walking with Jesus is a testimony of His sustaining grace, and yet the struggle you describe often feels heaviest in hearts that have pursued Him longest. When the weight of depression settles in and motivation drains away, the temptation is to grit through it in our own strength, to muster up resolve and push through as if our endurance were the measure of our devotion. But that internal battle, the one Paul lays open in Romans 7, is meant to exhaust every resource we have so that we finally cry out from the end of ourselves.

You want deliverance. That is not a selfish prayer; it is the very thing God invites you to seek. The problem is that we often try to conquer our darkness by sheer will, and when we fail yet again, the depression deepens. We think we should be better by now, stronger by now, past this by now. But God sometimes lets the struggle run its course, not because He is cruel, but because He will not share the glory of victory with our flesh. If we could fix ourselves, we would boast in our own discipline. So He waits until we come to the place Paul reached: “O wretched man that I am, who shall deliver me from this body of death?” That is not a cry of hope lost; it is the beginning of deliverance.

Your prayer for relief is already the Spirit’s work in you, turning you away from your own resources and toward the only One who breaks chains. When you feel the familiar weight settling in, instead of rallying your willpower, let the heaviness drive you directly into helpless dependence. Tell Him plainly that you cannot lift yourself, cannot think your way clear, cannot stir up a single ounce of spiritual motivation. Ask Him to do what you cannot. The deliverance Paul found came not from a new technique but from this shift: “There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus.” The Spirit who raised Jesus from the dead applies that same resurrection power to the deadened places within you.

Examine your heart gently in this process. Are you laboring under a sense that you must prove your faithfulness by never faltering? That your forty years must look a certain way, free of this recurring shadow? The works we do for God, even our inner battles, can become opportunities for the flesh to seek its own reputation. But the love of Christ constrains us, not the fear of failing or the drive to perform. If the motivation has shifted somewhere along the way from resting in His love to maintaining a reputation of steadfastness, the load becomes unbearable. Depression often moves in when our inner life has become a project we are managing for Him rather than a life drawn moment by moment from Him.

You will yet praise Him who is the health of your countenance. David spoke those words when his own soul was cast down, when it seemed God had forgotten him. He did not talk himself out of despair; he talked himself toward the only source of hope. Rehearse to your own heart the stories of His deliverance, both in Scripture and in your own decades with Him. Remind yourself, “I will yet praise Him.” Not because the feelings have shifted yet, but because He is still your God, and His faithfulness stands when everything within you faints.

You have not because you ask not, but also ask and receive not because you ask with wrong motives. So bring this request with a single desire: that He would be glorified in your freedom. Ask for deliverance so that your life, even your inner life, would magnify His power in your weakness. When He lifts you, He alone receives the honor. When He sustains you through the valley, the same is true. Let the struggle drive you back to the cross for your flesh, and let His Spirit fill the space where your own strength has finally surrendered.
