We have lifted your loved one before the Lord with you and we continue to pray for recovery from this pancreatitis.

Scripture shows us that God cares about the body as well as the soul. Matthew, writing by the Holy Spirit, points to Jesus healing those who were brought to Him in the evening and applies to that physical healing the prophecy of Isaiah, surely He has borne our griefs and infirmities. In that same way, when Jesus broke bread He said this is My body which is broken for you, inviting us to remember that His suffering was for our wholeness. We believe God still touches and heals physical affliction today, and a very large part of the Gospels shows Jesus healing the sick and afflicted because He is compassionate toward our weakness.

At the same time we do not presume to tell God what He must do in every case. Paul prayed three times concerning his thorn in the flesh and learned that God had a different purpose in allowing it to remain. There is much about healing we do not fully understand, and why some are healed quickly and others are not is not always clear to us. What we do know is that every true healing is from God, whether it comes in a moment or gradually. There is only one gradual healing recorded in the ministry of Jesus, but Scripture and experience teach us that God often heals through the natural processes He Himself established in the body. That gradual return of appetite and strength is no less divine because it comes through those processes.

So we are praying specifically that the Lord will graciously restore the ability to eat and to take in fluids, that there will be willingness and help to be faithful with medication, and that strength will return day by day. The Lord is the strength of His people. The psalm says the Lord will give strength to His people and bless His people with peace, and again blessed is the man whose strength is in the Lord. When we learn our own weakness and put our trust in Him, we find His strength made perfect in weakness. He can turn a valley of weeping into a place of refreshment, and bring His people from strength to strength as they look to Him. Prayer itself is a place of strength, where we are renewed as we wait on Him.

We also remember the connection Scripture makes between the health of the soul and the health of the body. John prayed that his friend would prosper and be in good health even as his soul prospered, and the proverb says a merry heart does good like a medicine. As you care so faithfully for the physical needs, three meals a day and fluids and medicine, continue also to feed the spiritual life through prayer and the Word, trusting the Lord to sustain both body and spirit.

May the Lord be near to your loved one in this recovery, easing pain, restoring appetite and hydration, giving wisdom to caregivers and grace to follow the treatment plan, and day by day renewing strength. May He give you His peace and His presence as you trust Him, and may His Word be your strength and portion in the days ahead.
