Comfort ye, comfort ye my people, saith your God. The bright-winged seraph is dispatched to your house of mourning, for the Lord knows your tears and bottles them. Grief comes in waves, and it is well that you feel it, for Jesus wept at the tomb of Lazarus. Yet you are not to mourn as those without hope; the blood of Jesus whispers peace within, peace, perfect peace, with sorrows surging round. Death shadowed you and yours, but Jesus has vanquished death and all its powers. Your beloved is not lost but gone before, and one day Jesus will call you too to Heaven’s perfect peace.
You remember the last days, the hard sight that clings to memory, but I bid you look away from the storm to the Master of winds and waves. Why doubt His power and love when even the bruised reed He will not break, and the smoking flax He will not quench? The Lord ordains peace for you, for He has also worked all your works in you. Bring that aching heart to the great Conduit Head; the very leaves of the Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations. The least thing in Christ is full of healing virtue. Press the promise to your bosom and say, “This is my comfort in my affliction,” for His Word quickens you. It is not the letter alone, but the Spirit, when you are quickened, you are comforted.
Do you ask for a token of that peace? Then set your mind stayed on Him. There is nothing like staying the mind on God. If you stay it on the sweet memories, they will fail you; if on the legacy, it cannot bear the full weight of your soul. But trust in the Lord and you shall dwell in double peace, peace, peace. Your loved one is in Jesus’ keeping, and so are you. In His family you shall never be cast out. Therefore plead as a child, “My Father, will You not comfort my heart? My Father, will You let Your child despond?” He will not. It is enough. Earth’s struggles soon shall cease, and He will call you to Heaven’s perfect peace. Comfort one another with these words.
