Your burden has been laid before the Lord and before His people, and we have heard it with sorrow. There is a jealousy of which the Scripture says that it is cruel as the grave, and wrath is cruel and anger is outrageous, but who is able to stand before jealousy. When it enters a household it does not rest, but devises one scheme after another, and the home which should be a place of peace becomes a place of torment. We grieve with you that you should suffer such unholy assaults within your own family.
Know this, that the Lord is a jealous God and He guardeth, like an armed man, the marriage covenant. That covenant is not of the invention of man, but of God, and it is a lifelong union of one man and one woman, cemented by mutual love and fidelity, wherein the two become one flesh. What you describe, the immodest display to allure your husband and the encouragement of a daughter to seduce him, is not love but lust, not affection but adultery, and in such a near relation it is the more grievous in the sight of God. The Lord has said, Thou shalt not commit adultery, and Thou shalt not covet, and His law is not set aside by the Gospel but is established by it. Sex and all that belongs to it is holy only within that covenant of marriage. Outside of it, it is sin and brings judgment, and we cannot ask God to bless what He has forbidden. Rather we must ask Him to convict, to bring to repentance, and to turn hearts from darkness to light.
You speak of generation curses. Hear the better word of the Gospel. Christ hath redeemed us from the curse of the law, being made a curse for us. The believer is not held in bondage by a fate handed down from his fathers, but if sin has run in a family, it is because the heart of man is by nature inclined to the same sins, until God writes His law in the inward parts and gives a new heart. No charm or curse need be feared where Christ is trusted, for He is our protection. Yet you will always need divine keeping, and that keeping is promised to those who walk in appointed ways. As for the truths of God which He has taught you by His own Spirit, grapple them to you as with hooks of steel, and keep closely to the footprints of the Lord Jesus Christ. It is in the way of truth, in the way of childlike trust in providential guidance, and in the way of holiness, that angelic protection is afforded. If you go in the way of error you cannot expect that protection, but if you keep in the way of the Lord, He shall give His angels charge over you.
Therefore we exhort you to choose the way of truth and to pray that the Lord would write His law more deeply upon every heart in that house. That strong resolve will bring a conflict, for another law in our members wars against it, but the Lord alone can write His law within and make us to delight in it and to hate every false way. Do not render evil for evil, nor seek revenge, for persecution and revenge violate the law of love to which we owe supreme allegiance. Put on modesty, sobriety and prayer, keep needful boundaries, seek the counsel and covering of godly pastors and elders in your church, and let no stealing or impurity be covered or excused. What is done in secret must be brought into the light, not with railing but with firm and holy truthfulness.
Let us pray with you.
O Lord our God, who art a jealous God over Thy people and over the covenant Thou hast ordained, look in mercy upon this daughter of sorrow and upon her household. We come to Thee through Jesus Christ alone, for there is no other name under heaven given among men whereby we must be saved, and we plead His blood which alone can cleanse from sin and break the power of sin. Write Thy law, we beseech Thee, upon every heart in this family. Convict of jealousy, of impurity, of theft and of deceit, and grant repentance that leads to life. Guard this marriage, we pray Thee, as with a flaming sword. Keep this husband from temptation, make him faithful to his vows, courageous to do what is right and to refuse to cover sin, and turn his anger into godly sorrow and firm love for his wife. Protect this wife from sabotage and from the cruelty of jealousy, give her wisdom to walk in appointed ways, to speak the truth in love, and to find refuge under the shadow of Thy wings. Let those who now plot evil be ashamed of their deeds and be turned to seek Christ and His holiness. Let this home be cleansed and be made a dwelling place of righteousness, loving kindness and mercies. We ask not for the prospering of sin, but for the triumph of grace, that all may know that Thou art married unto Thy people and wilt betroth them unto Thyself in faithfulness. Hear us for Jesus sake. Amen.
