Pray for anxiety and building trust in God

Anonymous

Beloved of All
I ask for prayers to help me release my fears, anxiety, and trust in God. I want so bad to trust in His will and divine timing, but I fear my anxiety has hijacked my mind and I don't remember a time where I have felt this burden lifted. I have started daily prayer, frequent mass, and self-talk to redirect my focus onto building my relationship with God. I think I sometimes feel that maybe He can't hear me or I'm not asking correctly, because why do I still struggle with this persistently?

We hear your heart, dear sister in Christ, and we stand with you in prayer as we bring your burdens before the Lord. Your desire to trust in God’s will and divine timing is a beautiful reflection of a heart seeking Him, and we rejoice that you are pursuing Him through daily prayer and time in His presence. Yet we also recognize the weight of anxiety you carry, and we want to remind you that you are not alone in this struggle. The enemy seeks to steal, kill, and destroy our peace (John 10:10), but Jesus came so that we may have life, and have it abundantly. Let us rebuke the spirit of fear and anxiety in the name of Jesus, for God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7).

First, we must address a concern in your request: you mentioned attending "frequent mass," which suggests you may be relying on rituals or sacraments outside of a personal relationship with Jesus Christ. While gathering with believers is important, it is only through faith in Jesus, His death and resurrection, that we are saved and have direct access to the Father. Jesus said, "I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me" (John 14:6). If you have not yet placed your trust in Him alone for salvation, we urge you to do so. Salvation is a gift received by grace through faith, not by works or religious observance (Ephesians 2:8-9). Confess your sins, believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead, and you will be saved (Romans 10:9).

Now, let us pray for you:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, lifting up our sister who is struggling with anxiety and fear. Lord, You know the depths of her heart, and You see the battles she faces each day. We ask that You would break the chains of anxiety that have taken hold of her mind. Replace her fears with Your perfect peace, which surpasses all understanding (Philippians 4:7). Remind her that You are near to the brokenhearted and save those who are crushed in spirit (Psalm 34:18). Help her to cast all her anxieties on You, because You care for her (1 Peter 5:7).

Father, we ask that You would strengthen her trust in You. When doubts arise, remind her of Your faithfulness throughout Scripture and in her own life. Your Word says that those who trust in You will never be put to shame (Psalm 25:3), and that You will never leave nor forsake her (Hebrews 13:5). Help her to rest in Your promises, knowing that Your timing is perfect and Your plans for her are good (Jeremiah 29:11).

Lord, we also pray for her spiritual growth. As she seeks You daily, draw her closer to Your heart. Teach her to pray without ceasing (1 Thessalonians 5:17) and to meditate on Your Word day and night (Joshua 1:8). Let her find comfort in knowing that her prayers are heard, not because of her words or her worthiness, but because of the blood of Jesus that grants her access to Your throne (Hebrews 4:16). May she experience the joy of Your presence and the peace that comes from surrendering her fears to You.

We rebuke the lies of the enemy that tell her she is alone, that You do not hear her, or that her struggles are too great for You. In Jesus’ name, we declare that these lies are broken, and we speak truth over her life. You are her refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble (Psalm 46:1). You are her Good Shepherd, who leads her beside still waters and restores her soul (Psalm 23:2-3).

Finally, Lord, we ask that You would surround her with godly community, believers who will encourage her, pray for her, and walk alongside her in this journey. May she find strength in fellowship with others who love You and seek to live for Your glory.

We trust You, Father, to work in her life in ways that only You can. May she grow in faith, experience Your peace, and come to know You more deeply each day. In Jesus’ precious and powerful name, we pray. Amen.

Beloved, we want to encourage you with the truth of God’s Word. Anxiety is a real struggle, but it does not have to define you. The apostle Paul, who faced immense trials, wrote, "Do not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God" (Philippians 4:6). Notice that Paul does not say "if" you are anxious, he acknowledges that anxiety can creep in, but he gives us the antidote: prayer, petition, and thanksgiving. When we bring our fears to God and thank Him for His faithfulness, His peace guards our hearts and minds.

You mentioned feeling as though God may not hear you or that you are not "asking correctly." Let us assure you: God hears you. The psalmist writes, "The eyes of the Lord are on the righteous, and his ears are attentive to their cry" (Psalm 34:15). Your prayers do not need to be perfect or eloquent, God looks at the heart (1 Samuel 16:7). Even when you do not feel His presence, He is there. The prophet Elijah experienced this when he fled from Jezebel and felt utterly alone. Yet God met him in the stillness and reminded him that he was not alone (1 Kings 19). You, too, are not alone.

We also want to gently remind you that self-talk, while helpful, is not enough on its own. Our strength comes from the Lord, not from our own efforts. Psalm 121:1-2 says, "I will lift up my eyes to the hills. Where does my help come from? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth." When anxiety rises, lift your eyes to Him. Speak His Word over your life. Declare His promises aloud, for faith comes by hearing the Word of God (Romans 10:17).

Lastly, consider journaling your prayers and the ways God answers them over time. This can serve as a tangible reminder of His faithfulness when doubts arise. Surround yourself with worship music that points your heart to Jesus, and spend time in Scripture, even if it is just a few verses each day. The more you fill your mind with God’s truth, the less room there will be for fear.

You are deeply loved by the Father, and He is working in your life even now. Keep pressing into Him, and do not grow weary. "Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up" (Galatians 6:9). We are praying for you, and we believe that God will lift this burden in His perfect timing.

Thank you for sharing this. We hear how much you long to trust God and how exhausting it is when anxiety lingers even as you’re doing all the right things, daily prayer, Mass, redirecting your thoughts. That persistence can make you wonder if He’s listening or if you’re somehow missing the right words. Please know this: God is not waiting for you to phrase it perfectly. He draws near to every honest, struggling heart, and your desire itself is already an act of trust.

Sometimes anxiety is not simply a spiritual battle; it can be a stubborn condition involving our bodies and brains, not just our beliefs. Many faithful people experience exactly what you’re describing, feeling hijacked and weary. It’s not a mark of weak faith. It’s often a signal that we need help from more than one direction. We’d gently encourage you to consider speaking with a counselor or your doctor about what you’ve been carrying. Getting compassionate, professional support alongside your spiritual life is not a sign of failure; it’s often one of the ways God brings relief and healing.

In the meantime, we are with you in this. We pray for you, and we picture you handing Jesus even the smallest, most repetitive anxious thought, knowing He doesn’t turn away from those who are worn out.

Father, in Jesus’ name we lift up our friend. Quiet the racing mind and ease the heavy weight. Help them sense Your nearness even when peace feels far off. Give wisdom about next steps and bring people who can walk alongside. Let them know, deep in their bones, that they are heard, loved, and held. Amen.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Psalm 37:4: Delight yourself in the Lord, And He shall give you the desires of your heart.
Matthew 6:33: But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.

God be with me as a mighty warrior. Let no weapon formed against me prosper. Protect me from all the plans of my enemies and the plans of the enemy of my soul. God, all that I have asked of You, in this prayer, please do the same for the writer of the prayer, all those who love and care about me, and all those I love and care about. God, please forever honor this prayer over each of our lives. God Thank You. Amen, so be it by faith, and by faith, it is so

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your very cry of distress reveals that the Spirit of God is at work within you, for the dead in sin feel no such grief over their lack of trust. That you long to cast yourself wholly upon the Lord, yet feel the grip of anxious thoughts, is itself a sign of life. The child who fears he is not truly his father’s son proves his sonship by his trembling.

You ask why the burden remains even as you pray and attend upon the means of grace. The trial of your faith is permitted, not because God is deaf, but because He is training you to cling to Him with a tighter grip. When we call upon God in the day of trouble, it honors Him as a real and present Helper. A faith that never struggles is no faith at all, for faith exists only where sight fails. Do not imagine that the persistence of fear means your prayers have miscarried. Jacob wrestled until daybreak with the covenant God, and his prayer was heard, though he limped away with a wound. Some touch of human weakness must always accompany the divine strength that God gives. The felt absence of relief is not evidence of God’s absence; it is the very workshop where trust is forged.

Beware of the notion that you must first feel a blaze of joy or achieve a certain measure of holiness before you may trust Christ for deliverance. That is to put your own frame before His finished work. Trust is the hand that takes the gift, not the reward for having clean hands. The living God, the God who thinks, acts, and stoops to help the worm, bids you fear not precisely because He has pledged to help you. Your anxiety may rage all the louder, but you are not to let it hijack your reason: set before your mind who this Christ is. He is very God of very God, who cannot lie, who bled and died for sinners, and who now lives to intercede. Can you doubt Him? You say it is easier to trust a dying Savior than the great invisible God, then fix your gaze there! The bleeding Son of Man is the express image of the Father’s heart. In Him every promise is yea and amen.

When the clamor of fear arises, meet it with the argument from the covenant. Plead as Jacob did: “O God of my father Abraham, and God of my father Isaac.” Remind the Lord of His own Word. He delights to be bound by His promises. Do not grope after some approved form of words; go straight to Him with your need: “O Lord, You know what I need! My soul trusts in You; in the shadow of Your wings will I make my refuge, until these calamities pass.” Such a cry is a truthful recognition of God. It proves He is a fact to your soul, even when feelings deny it.

It may be that some secret sin hinders your peace, and if so, the Spirit will make it known. But often this persistence of anxiety is permitted to teach you that you cannot manufacture trust by self-talk alone. The Lord will be glorified in your conduct afterwards, when you look back and see that He sustained you through the very storm you feared would drown you. Fear is weakening and dishonoring to God; it makes you crouch when you were made to stand with childlike dignity. Yet even in the midst of fear, a simple act of reliance honors Him. Have you ever seen a little child melt a rough man by its trust? So your trembling dependence is no offence to your heavenly Father; it is the work of His own grace and it moves His heart.

Cease from trying to gauge His attentiveness by the ebbing of your feelings. He hears you as surely as He lives. Do not quit the mercy seat because answers tarry. Grow more earnest still. Let your cry become more vehement, but never let go of that appropriating word: “O my God.” Even when you cannot say “My Father,” you may yet claim Him as your God. Trust in the shadow of His wings, not in the warmth of your own resolves. Let the matter be settled within you: He who has helped you will yet help you, and you shall yet praise Him for the lifting up of your countenance.

The persistence of your anxiety does not mean God is deaf, nor that you have asked incorrectly. You perceive this burden as proof of His silence, but often the delay of the gift is intended to increase your earnestness in asking. A fervent and toiling soul is not one that has already received, but one that will not desist, even when rebuked, even when the removal is deferred. Do not let the length of the struggle convince you that your prayers vanish into air. This very wrestling, painful as it is, turns your face toward Him.

Yet consider this also: a mind hijacked by fear has often placed its trust in its own management of life rather than committing all to God. The Evangelists recorded Peter’s fall not to accuse him, but to teach us how great an evil it is not to commit all to God, but to trust in oneself. The crushing weight you feel, the frantic self-talk, these are often the marks of a soul trying to secure its own peace rather than resting in the hand of the Master who binds Himself to care for you. You ask why you still struggle. Examine whether, when you pray, you truly cast the whole care upon Him, or whether you rise from prayer still gripping the burden with your own strength, observing your feelings as a sailor observes a treacherous sea. This inward watching of your own state, this measurement of whether you feel at peace, can itself become a form of self-reliance that feeds the anxiety.

The remedy is not a particular formula of words, but the recollection of where you stand. If we but consider that God is everywhere present, hearing all things, seeing all that is in the heart and in the depth of the soul, we would not do or say or imagine anything evil. If you had to stand constantly near the person of a ruler, you would stand there with fear. Yet standing in God’s presence, you allow your mind to be thrown back upon itself in anxious turmoil. Let this truth be your constant self-talk: He is present. When fear surges, do not fight it by examining it, but by remembering the King beside whom you stand. The proper fear of Him, the awe of His nearness, is the sole antidote to the fears that dissolve the soul. Is it not strange that we shudder at worldly poverty but feel no anguish and trembling lest we fall into hell through distrust? Redirect your fear to its rightful object. Fear to distrust His care, for that is the true spiritual wickedness that aims to cast you down.

And do not suppose that this vigilant fear is incompatible with joy. Serve the Lord with fear, and rejoice unto Him with trembling. This trembling before His majesty is the foundation of the only secure rejoicing. When your soul is stretched out toward God, when it considers with whom it holds converse, while angels stand by with fear and trembling, can you then gape and scratch yourself with anxious thoughts? This is the watchfulness I urge, a sober attention in your prayers, not merely rising at night or attending frequent mass, but a mind awake to the One it addresses. The architect, though a master of his art, stands with fear and trembling lest he fall from the building. You too have mounted high by your daily prayers; do not look down at the abyss of your feelings, but keep a wary eye on the foundation, which is Christ.

Consider those who were freed from Egypt. They groaned under bitter slavery, full of fear, anxiety, and trembling, scourged by a master far crueler than Pharaoh. But when they groaned and looked up to God, He sent them His Word and compunction. Anxiety, when it is the devil’s scourge, is an unprofitable and vain slavery. God permits it, not to destroy you, but to bring you to the point of groaning that looks up. He is bringing you forth from Egypt, from a slavery that seems safe because it is familiar. You will not leave without a struggle, but if you continue to groan, He will liberate you. Do not despair because I say, “with fear and trembling.” I do not say this so that you give up, supposing virtue to be too difficult, but so that you may be led to follow after Him with a mind ever resolute, clenched, and unrelaxed. For it is God who works in you both to will and to work for His good pleasure. Your part is to bring that resolute mind, and leave the outcome to Him. Do thou be bold.

That longing you have to release your fears and rest in God’s will is a sign of His work already stirring in your heart. But you are describing a heavy burden, and I have to wonder if you are trying to carry a weight God never laid on you. Jesus said plainly, “My yoke is easy, and my burden is light.” Many of us spend years trying to please ourselves or control outcomes, and that load is crushing. It keeps the mind in an agitated state of unrest. His burden, by contrast, is simply to please the Father. And when you live for that, anticipating what He might do each day, the pressure lifts. It is far lighter than the endless project of managing your own life.

You worry that He cannot hear you or that you are asking incorrectly. But your acceptance before God does not rest on how perfectly you pray. You are accepted in Jesus Christ. He hears you because you are hidden in His Son. You do not have to gather yourself into a special state or use just the right words to get God’s attention. He is not in some remote corner of the universe. You are in His presence right now, wherever you are. He has never moved.

When anxiety hijacks your mind, that is the moment to do what the psalmist did: deliberately put God back into the equation. “What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.” He did not pretend the fear was not real. He felt it fully and then shifted his focus. You say you cannot remember a time when this burden was lifted, but you can begin today to practice trusting Him in the dark place. Not just when things are calm, but in the middle of the racing thoughts. That kind of trust actually brings greater praise to His grace than trusting Him only when life feels good.

You have started daily prayer and redirecting your thoughts. That is right. But lean not on your own understanding. Acknowledge Him in all this, and He will direct your path. The enemy wants you to believe that your persistent struggle means God is absent or that you are failing. But God is for you. Cast this specific burden on Him right now and let Him sustain you. You do not have to figure out every angle or fix yourself. He is able to do for you what you cannot do for yourself. Rest there, and let His peace, which makes no sense to the anxious mind, begin to quiet you.
