Your message has been heard and we have carried it before the Lord with care for your peace.
It is a very natural thing that the heart should be moved with fear when danger is thought to be near, and many are all their lifetime subject to bondage through fear of death. Yet Scripture meets that fear not with more fear, but with a promise. Again and again the Lord says, Fear not, for I am with you, be not dismayed, for I am your God. Fear not, I will help you. Fear not, you worm Jacob. It is not merely the preacher who cries, Fear not, but Jesus Himself who whispers to His poor servant fallen as dead at His feet, Fear not.
We must then labor to get rid, as much as possible, of that fear which weakens and which dishonors God. To doubt the Eternal, to distrust the Omnipotent, is to think that the arm which piled the heavens and sustains the pillars of the earth shall ever be palsied. Fear not, says the Lord, for I will help you. Then why should you fear.
You write that the Lord told you the candy is poison. Hear this with love and soberness. God's Word is preserved century after century and it speaks with all the freshness and force as if it were uttered anew tonight. If it is God's truth that is declared, you will disregard it at your peril, but we must also test what we feel within us by that sure Word. Not every sudden impression is the voice of God, and the Spirit never speaks contrary to Scripture. God has taught His people from their youth, and He teaches them still, but He does so through His Word, through His providence, and through a sober mind. Be not carried away by dread, but look unto Jesus, for in proportion as your faith gets stronger, your fear will vanish.
There is wisdom in prudence. If you have reason to believe any food is harmful, or if your conscience is troubled about that which is associated with darkness, it is right to put it away. We are to have no fellowship with the unfruitful works of darkness, but rather to walk as children of light. To discard what you cannot receive with thankfulness and a clear conscience is no sin. What would be a snare is to live in terror, as if poison could reach you apart from the Lord's permission, or as if the enemy could destroy one whom God means to keep.
Look into the side of Christ and see there God's hatred for sin and God's love for sinners, for the blood of Jesus Christ, God's dear Son, cleanses us from all sin. He was chastened but never cast out, and so His people, though tried, are still His pupils in His school. He will not put you to shame who have trusted in His name. Gird up your loins and ask, am I God's witness in this hour, and will I declare His wondrous works rather than the power of fear.
Therefore we counsel you thus. Bring your fear to Christ in prayer and leave it there. If the candy troubles you, let it be thrown away and think no more of it. Do not eat with fear, and do not let your household eat with fear. Give thanks for what is wholesome and pure, and abstain from what is doubtful. Speak of God's wondrous works, sing His psalms in your house, and let your children see not a spirit of dread, but a quiet trust that says, the Lord will help me.
We pray for you that the Lord will deliver you from all dismay, that He will keep your heart in perfect peace as your mind is stayed upon Him, and that you may know the blessed fear of the Lord which is holy reverence and awe, rather than the fear of men which brings a snare. May you look unto Jesus, who conquers for us the fear of death, and find in Him your help and your rest.
