Your honest and simple prayer is exactly the kind God wants to hear. He is not fooled by polished words, so coming to Him plainly and openly is the right way to come. You can pour out your heart before Him, because He is a refuge and a covering for those who trust Him.
Scripture gives a clear record about how we can know God hears us. God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. The letter of First John was written so that those who believe on the name of the Son of God may know that they have eternal life. Assurance does not come from trying harder or from a feeling, but from believing what God has said about Jesus and resting in His grace. To refuse to believe that witness is to in effect call God untrue, but to believe it is to have confidence that you are His child. When you put your trust in Jesus Christ alone for salvation, you can have peace that things are right between you and God, because God is faithful to keep His word.
The Bible also says that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us, and if He hears us we can know we have the petitions we asked of Him. That is where confidence in prayer comes from. God does hear the prayer of a sinner who cries, God be merciful to me a sinner, or else none of us would ever have been saved. He hears you when you come through Jesus, who is the one who makes a way for sinful people to approach a holy God. Your soul can be anchored in that promise, and you can flee to it and hold fast to it as a place of refuge.
Asking God not to let you down is a real and human fear, and it helps to remember how faithful and wise He is. His mercies are new every morning and great is His faithfulness to do what He has promised. It is better to trust in the Lord than to put confidence in people or in our own strength or resources. He always desires to work for the good of His children. That does not mean every prayer is answered exactly as we ask. Many people looking back are thankful for prayers God did not answer as they wanted, because He knew what was best and kept them from greater harm. Learning to trust God means trusting Him not only when we understand what He is doing and when life is going well, but also when we do not understand and when things are hard. That kind of trust is tested, and God is pleased when we trust Him completely.
So keep bringing your requests to Him honestly, trust His Son fully, and rest in the quiet assurance that He hears you. If you have asked according to His will, you can thank Him that He has heard, and then wait patiently for Him to answer in His wisdom.
