The Lord Jesus Christ, the Sun of Righteousness, has risen with healing in His wings, and the very leaves of the tree of life are for the healing of the nations. That inflammation which plagues your face, and the precious eyesight you fear to lose, are not beyond the reach of His tender hand. Calvary is the place for the healing balm rather than for the lancet and the knife; the work of our heavenly Physician is to apply the remedy, and He delighteth to heal the broken in heart and bindeth up their wounds. Pour out this burden before Him with all your earnest “pleases,” for He is not unmoved by our cries. There is healing power in Jesus, and the least thing about Him, the hem of His garment, a word from His lips, is charged with restoring virtue.
Yet let me press this sweet truth upon you: healing and pardon are happy companions. When the Lord Jesus looked upon the man sick of the palsy, He spoke first forgiveness, then healing. Entreat Him, then, not only for the removal of this malady, but for a fresh washing in the fountain of His grace. Sometimes our bodily distresses are sent to drive us nearer to the Cross, where the true balm flows. Seek the healing of your face and eyes, but seek it from the hand that was pierced; ask laying hold upon His merits and His sacrifice. The healing power is often most manifest when Christ is teaching, when His Word is opened and His truth believed. So hear Him say, “Son, be of good cheer,” and let faith spring up as you hear. Faith comes by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.
Know this, too: He is able to heal, but there are seasons when that power is more than usually manifest, acceptable days, days of salvation. Cry mightily in this hour of need, and trust not in your own pleas but in His promise. He took Peter’s wife’s mother by the hand and lifted her up; so will He touch you with that same living contact. The Incarnation of Christ is full of healing; God in our flesh means health for our flesh. There is healing for you, and that healing must come before any service or peace can be. Do not despair if the answer tarries, for the healing virtue which His grace infuses will work health and cure till we are without spot or wrinkle. Even now, lift your eyes to the great conduit Head of the Church, from whom abundant streams of healing flow to men below. May the Lord rebuke this inflammation, protect your eyesight, and give you to walk in the light of His countenance, until that day when faces in heaven, fresher than new-born babes, owe all their brightness to these healing leaves. God bless you. Amen.
