Disciple of Prayer
Please pray for me and a friend. I think we're both going through deep depression. I really feel like I'm at my breaking point. And I think they do feel that way too. I know the Lord told us to read the Bible every day, but even that is so hard for us to do. The heaviness is just too much, and the motivation is not there because nothing ever changes. I'm sure it's a spiritual attack, but I don't feel strong enough to fight anymore. All I want to do is numb myself. I know it's wrong, but I really wish the Lord would just allow me to die and take my life. Please pray for some divine intervention and strength. I do believe in Jesus - I haven't lost my faith. I guess I just don't really believe anything is ever going to change for their life or for mine. I feel like both of our lives have so little hope left. And I know that's wrong too, but I just can't seem to climb out of this pit, and neither can they

We have heard your cry and we are lifting you and your friend up together before the throne of grace in Jesus name. We thank God that you have not lost your faith and that you do believe in Jesus, for it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and hope that does not disappoint. We hear the deep heaviness and exhaustion in your words, that you both feel at your breaking point, unable to even open the Bible, feeling numb and hopeless and wishing the Lord would take your life. We want you to know that God sees you in this pit and He is not distant or disappointed with you in your weakness.

The Lord tells us in Psalm 34:18 Yahweh is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves those who have a crushed spirit. And in Psalm 61:2 When my heart is overwhelmed, lead me to the rock that is higher than I. What you are feeling is real, and God does not condemn you for feeling overwhelmed. He knows your frame and He understands that the heaviness is too much for you to carry alone. That is why He says in 1 Peter 5:7 casting all your worries on him, because he cares for you.

We gently rebuke the lies that have settled over both of you, the lie that nothing will ever change and that your lives have so little hope left, and the lie that death would be better than life. Those thoughts are not from the Lord. The enemy is a liar and he wants you to believe your pit has no way out, but we rebuke that spirit of despair and hopelessness in Jesus name. Your life is precious to God and He has thoughts of peace and not of evil toward you, to give you hope and a future as He promises in Jeremiah 29:11 For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. The desire to numb yourself or to have your life taken is not His will for you. He wants to be your refuge and your strength, not the numbness this world offers.

You are right that this is a spiritual attack, for Ephesians 6:12 our wrestling is not against flesh and blood, but against the principalities, against the powers, against the world's rulers of the darkness of this age, and against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places. Yet we are not called to fight in our own strength when we have none left. The Lord says in Isaiah 41:10 Don't you be afraid, for I am with you. Don't be dismayed, for I am your God. I will strengthen you. Yes, I will help you. Yes, I will uphold you with the right hand of my righteousness. And in 2 Corinthians 12:9 My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness. When you feel too weak to fight, that is where His power can rest upon you. James 4:7 tells us to submit ourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you. Resisting in this season may simply look like whispering the name of Jesus when you have no other words.

We also hear your struggle to read the Bible every day and the guilt you feel over it. Please hear that God is not keeping a record of your performance to love you less. His loving kindnesses do not fail, they are new every morning, great is His faithfulness as we read in Lamentations 3:22-23. When motivation is gone and heaviness makes even one verse feel heavy, we encourage you to give yourselves grace. Even a single verse, a single honest prayer like Help me, Jesus, is heard. If you can, try to read one Psalm aloud together or listen to it, perhaps Psalm 40:2 He brought me up also out of a horrible pit, out of the miry clay. He set my feet on a rock, and gave me a firm place to stand. Let the Word come to you in small sips. Put on worship music, pray short honest prayers, and do not isolate. We urge you both to reach out to a trusted pastor, a mature believer, a biblical counselor, or a safe person today and tell them how close to the breaking point you feel, and if the thoughts of dying grow stronger, please reach out right away for help to someone near you or a crisis helpline in your area. You do not have to climb out of this pit alone.

We want to remind you that our feelings do not define the truth. Psalm 42:11 says Why are you in despair, my soul? Why are you disturbed within me? Hope in God! For I shall still praise him, the saving help of my countenance, and my God. Hope in God is not hope that circumstances will instantly become easy, but hope that He is with you, He is working even when you cannot see it, and He will not waste this pain. Romans 8:28 We know that all things work together for good for those who love God, for those who are called according to his purpose.

So we pray together now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this dear one and their beloved friend to You. You see their broken hearts, their exhaustion, their heaviness, and the pit they feel trapped in. Lord, we ask for divine intervention, for Your hand to lift them out of the miry clay and set their feet on the Rock. Pour out Your strength where there is no strength left, Your hope where hope feels gone, and Your peace which surpasses all understanding to guard their hearts and thoughts in Christ Jesus according to Philippians 4:6-7. Rebuke the enemy's lies and the spirit of heaviness, and let Your light shine into their darkness. Give them a hunger for Your Word again in small, gentle ways and surround them with people who will walk with them, pray with them, and remind them they are loved. Protect their lives, Lord, for their lives belong to You and You have purpose for them still. Renew their minds to believe that with You, things can change, for with You nothing is impossible. We cast all their cares on You because You care for them. Keep them in Your perfect care and let them feel Your nearness today. We ask this in the mighty and merciful name of Jesus, our only hope and Savior, amen.

We are so thankful you wrote to us so honestly, and we are holding you and your friend in prayer. Hearing that you both feel at a breaking point, that even opening the Bible feels too heavy, and that nothing seems to change helps us understand how exhausting this season has been. Wanting to numb the pain and wishing the Lord would take your life shows how heavy that burden has become, not that you have lost your faith. We hear that you still believe in Jesus even while hope feels so thin.

When heaviness settles in like this it can make everything feel permanent, as if the future will always be like today and there is no way out of the pit. Please try not to face these thoughts alone. It can help to tell one trusted person today how you are really doing, and to reach out for personal support alongside prayer, like a pastor, counselor or medical professional who can walk with you and your friend in person. If a full Bible reading feels impossible right now, a single honest prayer is enough for the moment.

Father, in Jesus name we lift this person and their friend to you. You see their weariness and the faith that is still reaching for you. Please surround them with caring help today, give them strength for the next step, and remind them they are not abandoned. Keep them safe and draw them gently toward hope. Amen.

Hello friend. Thank you for sharing your prayers, your story and your situation. I have so much compassion and empathy for both you and your friend. I want you to know you are heard, seen, validated, understood and cared about. If there is one thing to remember , its that you are a child of God and as a child of God you hold, wield, possess enormous power even if you don't feel like it. But the darkness of depression can easily be dispelled by your light and remembering who you are. So maybe this reminder will spark your turnaround. And in the meantime, I will certainly pray for a divine healing, intervention and peace of mind. Sending you love and light. God bless you favorably. Amen

Well, maybe the only thing that needs to change is your attitude about the life you have. 1 Thess 5:16-28 says Rejoice always, pray continuously and give thanks in all things, for that is God's will for you in Christ Jesus. Maybe try being thankful instead of wishing for more might change your attitude to your life! 🥰💪👍

Your heaviness has been heard, and your honest cry has not fallen unnoticed. To feel at your breaking point, to find even the daily reading of Scripture a burden too heavy to lift, to feel that nothing ever changes and that you have no strength left to fight, this is a deep pit indeed. And to hear that your friend walks in the same darkness makes the burden double. Thank you for bringing this into the light and for confessing both your faith in Jesus and your present despair.

There is a truth in what you feel, and there is an untruth that must be gently uncovered. It is true that there is no hope in yourself. Finding there is no hope in himself, a man often draws the unwarrantable conclusion that there is no hope for him in God. We would bring you to hopelessness in self, for that is needful, but hopelessness in God is a sin from which we would urge you to escape. You say you have little hope left for your life or for your friend. Yet the word, Our hope is lost, goes beyond the truth of God. God is the sinner's hope and He is not lost, so that word of despair is not warranted. He is the God of Hope, and those who are without hope are also without God. While you still say, I do believe in Jesus, you have not lost Him who is Hope itself.

You name rightly that despair is an exceedingly weakening thing to the soul and that the Evil One labors to torment the mind with horror and disturbance. How is it that Satan has the impudence to make men despair when you have an Omnipotent God to deal with you, when the precious blood of the Son of God is given for sinners, when the silver bell still rings, Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. While life lasts, while mercy's gate stands wide open, despair is a false and unreasonable word. It is not so much a sickness of the understanding as a sin of the soul, and it must be denounced that grace may be glorified.

You say you have no strength to fight and no motivation because nothing changes. The Scripture meets you exactly there. They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. If we are apart from God, our strength will die out. But when by an act of faith you that are human are linked with the Divine, casting your nothingness upon His omnipotence, then shall you find your strength renewed. You cannot serve, or pray, or even read without expenditure of strength, and therefore you need to have that strength renewed. Like the eagle, your youth may be renewed. The eagle's strength is renewed by the food it eats and by the air it breathes up in the clear azure, and by the season of refreshing when the Spirit visits. So come to the Word not as a task to perform in your own power, but as food to receive and air to breathe. Even a single verse waited upon in prayer, even a whispered Lord help me, is waiting upon God.

And when there remains no strength in you, nor any ability of any kind, then fling yourself upon the Divine strength and lay hold upon it. To be strengthened with strength in the Lord makes a man strong in faith and strong in patience. You may be distressed, but you need not be in despair. What a strong man was Job, who was tried yet not overcome. The Lord knows how to give patience to those who have no power. You do not need to climb out of the pit by your own climbing. The dead cannot gather strength or walk. Cry for life. While you are yet without strength, believe that Christ died for the ungodly. Your life lies in hope, and while you have hope you have life.

That wish to numb yourself and that thought that the Lord would allow you to die must be answered with tenderness and truth. To despair so as to perish would be a form of willful self destruction, and no man has a right to despair while Christ invites sinners to come. Numbing may promise relief, but it steals the very capacity to wait upon God and to receive His renewing. Do not walk after that device. Turn instead to the God who gives exceeding blessed hope and close fellowship with Christ, all as the gift of God.

For you and for your friend, let us pray and let us also urge you to not remain alone in this heaviness. Tell a faithful pastor, a mature believer, a counselor or a trusted family member today what you have told us. If the desire to die grows strong, seek help at once and let another person stay with you. The Lord often renews strength through the presence and prayers of His people and through wise care for body and mind.

Let us pray together.

O God of Hope, Father of mercies, look upon these two dear souls who labour and are heavy laden. They have no might, and they confess it. Lord, be Thou the glory of their strength. Forgive the sin of despair and speak a renewed revelation of Thy covenant grace. Link their weakness to Thine omnipotence. Renew their strength as the eagle's, feed them with the bread of life, let them breathe the pure air of Thy Spirit, and visit them with times of refreshing. Where Satan has tormented, bring the healing hand of tenderness and love. Where they have said there is no hope, show them that Thou art their hope and not lost. Give them faith to believe Thy promise as matter of fact and to act upon it, give them patience to endure as Job endured, and give them life where they have felt as dead. Keep them this day, hold them fast, and let them see that Thou wilt do as Thou hast said, that they shall be strengthened in the Lord and walk up and down in Thy name. In the name of Jesus Christ our only Saviour, who died for the ungodly and ever liveth to intercede, Amen.

Continue to wait upon the Lord, even in weakness, even in a single sigh. He hears, He renews, and He will not let those who trust Him be put to shame.
