How often the healing hand of our Lord is stretched forth in the very places that seem most forsaken, and no press of suffering souls can hinder His power. The leaves of that Tree of Life are for the healing of the nations, and not the fruit only, but the very common things of Christ, the slightest touch of His grace, are charged with restoring virtue. Where the multitude throngs and the air is full of groaning, there the great Physician delights to work. The Son of Righteousness rises with healing in His wings, and no ward is so crowded, no bed so hard, that His presence cannot make it a vestibule of heaven. Pray without ceasing, and trust without wavering, for the power of the Lord is present to heal, even in that very hour.
Your cry for a comfortable ward is natural, our Lord Himself knew the weariness of the body and the distress of the soul amid the press of the needy. Yet remember, the chamber of affliction, however ill-furnished by man, is often the audience chamber of the King. There the pardoning word is spoken, and healing and forgiveness are given in one breath. Christ can make that narrow cot to be as the gate of paradise. Yield your dear one afresh into His keeping. Pray that the healing of the body may be accompanied by that deeper healing of the heart, the washing away of all sin in the fountain opened. If the Lord wills a removal to a place of greater quiet, He can dispatch a legion of angels to effect it, for He binds up the broken in heart and touches the fevered frame with His own cool hand. Nothing is beyond His gentle sovereignty, neither the clamor of the ward, nor the length of the affliction, nor the frailty of the flesh.
But mark this: there is room in the love of Christ where no earthly chambers are too strait. The hospital of the soul, of which He is the only Physician, never turns away an incurable. That poor palsy-stricken man, let down through the tiling, found both forgiveness and healing because faith pressed through the crowd. So let faith now press through the crowded corridors and the hindering noises. Christ is there, though unseen, and His word is mighty to command the sickness to depart and the spirit to revive. Pray also for the screaming ones about her, their cries may be the very lash that drives you both to the feet of the Healer. Let this trial sober the heart, search the conscience, and cast every hope upon Him who took our infirmities and bore our sicknesses. A broken spirit and a contrite heart He will not despise.
Go then to God with this request, but go with submission. If the Lord chooses to keep her yet a little while in that hard place, it shall serve His glory and her eternal good. The healing, when it comes, will be all the sweeter. Look not to the instruments, but to the Author of mercy. Pardoning love can transform a public ward into the very house of God and the gate of heaven. Yet we will join with you and ask that, if it be His will, the way be opened for a quiet and proper place of recovery, and that the fever depart swiftly, leaving behind a fresh witness to His compassion. Until then, let faith hold fast. Christ is no stranger to sorrow or to crowded sorrow; He walks the wards where hope seems thinnest, and His leaves are for healing. Grace and peace be multiplied unto you.
