Please pray for someone close to me who is apparently seriously thinking about committing suicide. This situation is very troubling in many ways.

It’s indeed troubling to learn that your friend is considering suicide. In situations like this, I believe there’s no substitute for one-on-one interaction with a caring, qualified professional. If your friend is in the US, I believe if he/she call this number 855-382-5433, they can provide a free phone consultation with a licensed counselor. Know that I’ll be praying, asking the Lord to reveal His healing presence to your friend in a special and powerful way in the days ahead. I’ll also pray that God will surround you with His peace and grant you wisdom as to how you can help your friend.
