We have received your request and we join you in sorrow as you remember your mother one year after her passing from cancer. To lose a mother is a deep wound, and an anniversary brings that grief close again. We will pray for you and for her.
We understand the pain that makes you weep, and we do not tell you not to mourn. Scripture teaches us there is a sorrow of the world that works death, and a godly sorrow that leads to hope. We are called not to grieve as those who have no hope, but to grieve with love and faith, looking to the promise of life which is in Jesus Christ. That promise is not seen here, but it is sure for those who are His, where grief and mourning flee away.
There is wisdom in asking the church to pray for those who have departed, that they may find rest and that the Judge may be merciful to them. We cannot change the past, but we can entrust your mother to the mercy of God, who is both just and full of compassion, and who has shown His power to bring life out of death.
Let us pray together:
Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, we come before You with this dear child who mourns a mother. You know her name, her life, her suffering through cancer, and the day You called her from this world. We entrust her soul to Your mercy. If she trusted in Christ, grant her rest in Your presence, light and peace, and a share in the resurrection to eternal life. We ask that You, the righteous Judge, be propitious to her according to Your great love and the blood of Christ shed for sinners. For those promises are greater than death, and Your grace not only disarms death but overcomes it, giving not only this present life but life immortal and eternal.
Father, comfort the one who remains. On this anniversary, calm the storm of sorrow and keep this heart from despair. Turn mourning into prayer, and tears into seeds of hope. Teach us to grieve in a way that leads us closer to You, to repent of our own sins, to labor faithfully in this short life, and to long for the endless rest that is to come. Surround this family with Your presence, with the comfort of Your Word and the love of Your people, and give peace that passes understanding.
We ask all this trusting not in our own worth, but in the mercy of Jesus Christ, who died and rose again so that all who believe in Him may have eternal life. Amen.
We will continue to remember you in prayer tomorrow and in the days ahead. If grief rises again, bring it to the Lord in prayer, and let His promise sustain you.
