Chrysostom
Beloved of All
The terror that now seizes your heart is natural to love; you tremble because your husband is precious to you. Yet let not this fear devour the hope you have in God. If you have walked uprightly, what have you to fear? He that is conscious of no evil shall suffer nothing dreadful. The Lord, who counts the hairs of your head, does not lose sight of your husband on a journey. If even those who behold the light of this world are safe, how much safer is the man who, though unseen by you, is never hidden from Christ, unless he separates himself from Him.
You tell me his phone is silent and your mind paints horrors. This is the snare of the enemy, who magnifies uncertainty into calamity to shake your faith. Turn that fear into earnest prayer, not into torments over what may never come to pass. The wife is bidden to fear her husband, yes, but that fear is reverence, not this consuming dread. Your husband is your own flesh; if you love him, trust the God who knit you together. Righteousness is a safe harbor; the extortioners lose all, but she who clings to virtue possesses her true goods in peace.
Even should the worst have occurred, and I pray it has not, you are not abandoned. A wife is bound to her husband as long as he lives; but if he sleeps in the Lord, you have a Bridegroom who never fails. So do not let imagination outrun Providence. Kneel now, lift up your soul, and say with David, “I sought the Lord, and He heard me, and delivered me from all my fears.” Lay your request before Him with thanksgiving, not with despair. His mercy is a present help, not a distant hope for the perfect. Only beware lest this trial become an excuse to neglect watchfulness over your own heart; a calm spirit pleads with God more powerfully than a storm-tossed mind.
I join my prayers to yours that your husband is even now safe, and that his voice will soon scatter these shadows. But if the Lord, in wisdom, ordains a testing, it will be for the perfecting of your faith. Be still, then, and know that He is God.
