God’s Foreknowledge of Man’s Sin

Thank you for sharing your heart so openly. Your desire to do what is right and to want what is right, to draw closer to God, to read His Word and to pray, is itself a sign of His grace at work in you. It is good that you thank Him for forgiveness and love that came even before you asked, and also good that you do not want to take that grace for granted but want to walk in it more faithfully.

God has taught His people to pray continually for forgiveness, and that prayer belongs to believers. When we pray Our Father and ask to be forgiven as we forgive, we are reminded that His mercy remains open to us after we have come to Him, and that remembering our sins keeps us humble while trusting His promise to pardon keeps us hopeful. Let every prayer you offer be accompanied with thanksgiving, as you are already doing, for a thankful heart keeps prayer from growing bitter or cold.

Prayer is a great weapon for the daily fight of life. The days are full of struggles and temptations that can wear us down, so we need to make God favorable to us by prayer in the morning and at night, and then go out to our work with security. It is also good that you have asked others to pray for you. We do need the prayers of our brothers and sisters, and God often answers through them, yet those prayers help us most when we ourselves are also alert and seeking Him. Do not be discouraged if consistency is hard at first. Choose a steady time each morning and evening to be with the Lord in Scripture and prayer, even briefly, and ask Him to make your will one with His.

I join my prayer with yours now. Father, I thank You for this one who longs to know You more. In the name of Jesus Christ, Your Son, through whom alone we have forgiveness and access to You, forgive all sins that are confessed to You and cleanse this heart. Pour out Your grace to make this desire steady and wholehearted. Teach how to pray, give hunger for Your Word, and keep this life close to You morning and night. Help to love You above all and to love what You have made with the love You give, and to walk each day without shipwreck, kept by Your mercy. Grant growth, perseverance, and joy in Your presence. Amen.

Your honest desire to want what is right is itself evidence of God working in your heart, and I thank Him for the hunger you have expressed to draw closer to Him, to spend time in His Word, and to learn to pray more deeply.

You are right to thank Him that forgiveness was already accomplished before you ever prayed. At the cross God showed His love in the clearest way, when He made Jesus who knew no sin to be sin for us, so that in Him we might become the righteousness of God. That righteousness is not earned by our effort, it is a gift received by believing that Jesus is the Son of God. Because of that gift, God dwells in you and you in Him, and that fellowship is what the Bible calls real life. To be one with God through Christ is to live. Your sin is forgiven not because you prayed well enough, but because the sacrifice has been offered and your great High Priest now represents you before the Father.

It is good that you feel the weight of sin and do not want to take grace for granted, and it is also good that you do not stay under condemnation. Many believers struggle their whole lives with a lack of assurance because they think of their relationship with God as a matter of works or of keeping rules perfectly. That kind of legal relationship can never give full assurance. God wants you to have full assurance, and He abundantly assures you by His unchanging character and by His promises which He has confirmed with an oath. Even if you have slipped and fallen, He does not forget you. He remembers your work of love toward Him. He desires that you show diligence to the end so that you may enjoy the riches of full assurance of hope and understanding in Christ. That assurance grows as you come to understand grace and your position in Christ, not as you try harder to earn it.

Growth will come as you give yourself to the two things God always uses, the Word and prayer. As you simply read the Bible, the Spirit of God will teach you truth. You do not need to fear being led astray when you stay with the Word. The more you read, the more your heart will stand in awe of what God says about Himself, about you, and about life. Loving His Word and walking in it brings a deep peace, for great peace have those who love His law. Peace with God brings peace within yourself. Begin your day with Him if you can, even briefly thanking Him for a new day, and let your reading be steady and honest rather than pressured.

Learn also to see prayer as more than asking for things. True prayer begins with God, with His purposes and His greatness. It is worship, an awareness of His glory and power, and an acknowledgment of our own need and inability. In that place we learn submission to His will. Prayer does not change God, it changes us, and that is often its greatest work. At the same time, God hears the fervent prayer that comes from the heart, often out of desperation and need. He invites us to come as those who are poor and needy and to trust Him as our help and deliverer. Every good thing you have asked for according to His will, He had already purposed to give you. And the prayer of faith can end with praise, thanking Him before you see the answer, because you trust His righteous judgments.

I join with you in agreement in prayer now, as the Lord promised that when two or three agree on earth concerning anything, He hears.

Father, I thank You for this heart that wants to want what You want. Thank You that You loved us first and made a way through the cross for forgiveness and fellowship. Wash and cleanse again, and give a renewed mind to love what You love. Teach Your child to hear Your voice in Scripture, to stand in awe of Your Word, and to find peace in walking with You. Teach submission in prayer, and let prayer become worship and communion more than only petition. Grant diligence in the things of the Lord, and give the full assurance of hope that rests on Your unchanging nature and Your promises in Christ. Fill with Your Spirit, and keep from the lies of the enemy about Your character and Your attitude toward Your children. Make this life fruitful in love for You and in a healthy, godly love for others, and draw this dear one into consistent, wholehearted fellowship with You. In the name of Jesus, amen.
