The noise that assails your ears and the tumult that robs you of sleep are grievous trials indeed, but let me direct you to a comfort that no stomping foot can drown out. You say the clamor is relentless and you are driven to sobbing, yet there is a peace that passes all understanding which may garrison your heart even now. This comfort is not found in the silence of your ceiling but in the quickening power of God's Word. When a soul is brought low by affliction, that Word, full of rich promises, becomes the peculiar comfort of the believer. The racket from above may continue, but if the Lord speaks life into your spirit through His promises, you shall discover that your sorrows are made to have a salutary action on your soul. He quickens us in our afflictions, and from that revival true comfort flows.
You cry out for peace and quiet, and rightly so, but do not imagine that mere stillness of your surroundings can bestow it. The peace that Christ gives is a filling peace, a well-founded peace that meets every need of the heart. Are you troubled? The promise stands: "All things work together for good to them that love God." Your adversary may stomp with malice, yet the God of patience and comfort can establish your soul. You need both comfort and constancy. Comfort alone, if it were merely a lull in the noise, would leave you weak; but to be comforted in your heart while being established in every good word and work, that is the heavenly plaiting of grace. He that is happy in the Lord will persevere, and the joy of the Lord shall be your strength.
Let this trial drive you to musing upon Christ rather than to despair. The ancient saints spent hours in meditation upon the wounds of Jesus, and in that quiet musing they found a matchless repose even when outward troubles roared. Roll this burden upon your God. Your own thoughts are seething like a tempestuous sea, but there is rest to be had. God’s comforts not only console and sustain, but they delight the soul in the midst of tumultuous thoughts. Do not merely wear earplugs; clothe yourself with the promise, "You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You." The blood of Jesus whispers peace within, a peace that no neighbor's cruelty can silence.
Therefore, go in peace. Do not go among them disturbed and fluttered, but with a holy calm. Christ Jesus says even now to every sinner who trusts in His blood and righteousness, "Your faith has saved you; go in peace." Let this be your present possession. You are safe, and they, whatever their designs, cannot rob you of the hope laid up in heaven. Earth’s struggles shall soon cease, and Jesus calls us to heaven’s perfect peace. Until that day, let patience have her perfect work, knowing that the God of hope can fill you with all joy and peace in believing, that you may abound in hope through the power of the Holy Spirit.
