Your cry for mercy has been heard, and there is comfort in knowing that the Lord hears not only the eloquent prayer but the inward groaning of the spirit. Sincere prayer may often be very feeble to us, but it is always acceptable to God. At times our hearts have been broken because we felt as if we could not feel, and our only prayer was, God forgive us that we cannot pray, yet notwithstanding God has heard that inward groaning. He knows the unspoken prayer which you carry before Him, for calling upon God in the day of trouble is honest speech with Him, or at least a sincere desire in that direction, and it proves that God is a fact to the suppliant. You need not fear that because you keep the matter unspoken before men it is unheard in heaven, for the Lord knows what you ask even before you frame the words.
Do not be astonished that faith should be mocked. Faith among mockers is no new thing. It has been said of the believer, He trusted on the Lord that He would deliver him, let Him deliver him, and the world still asks, where is your God. Faith's foes often live in the same house with her, and some will revile what they should reverence, as if faith in God were a thing to be scoffed at instead of being the most wise and proper thing under heaven. True religion is sanctified common sense, and the day shall come when it will be known that unbelief is folly and faith in the Eternal is essential wisdom. If any have made sport of your prayer, even comparing it to Moses opening the Red Sea, remember that they do but show their own littleness. God is not mocked by their mocking, and He does not invite intending to repulse. He sets open the door of mercy not to shut it in the sinner's face. Let their scorn drive you not to silence before God, but to more secret and sincere pleading with Him who sees in secret.
You write that you must believe your prayer has already been answered. Take care, lest presumption take the place of faith. Brethren must not take delays in prayer for denial. God's long dated bills will be punctually honored, but we must not suffer Satan to shake our confidence by pointing to unanswered prayers and demanding an answer in our own way and time. Jacob prayed very definitely, Lord deliver me from the hand of my brother, from the hand of Esau, and he pleaded the covenant, O God of my father Abraham and God of my father Isaac, and he used arguments with God as a man pleads with his friend. Go and plead in that way, with definite and clear petitions grounded upon the promise and the blood of Christ. Yet remember that Jacob's prayer was answered, but it was not answered in the way he expected it would be. Sometimes when you have been praying for salvation, God answers you by destroying all your hopes. You ask Him to save you, and you think He would do it in a way that would make you happy, but He may first make you feel worse, that He may bring you truly low before He lifts you up. The ears of true faith are very quick and keen, and she hears the coming of the blessing, but that blessing may come as a wrestling that lames you before it blesses you. Therefore pray, and leave the manner and the timing with the Lord, believing not that God must do as you have pictured, but that He will do what is holy and good and best.
For this reason I would urge you to add to your acknowledgements the humble prayer, Search me, O God, and know my heart, try me and know my thoughts. If there be anything in your desire that is not according to His Word, ask Him to correct it, to quicken you in His way, and to make you willing to have His will done. Salvation is through Jesus Christ alone, and every good gift comes through Him. No prayer prevails except through the merit of the Great High Priest who ever lives to make intercession. If your heart has been made to feel its need of a Saviour, that itself is double cause for prayer and for praise, for God touched that heart to bring you to Himself.
We will not pretend to bless what God has not called good, for we desire for you not a fleeting answer that would harm your soul, but that which honors Christ and conforms you to His likeness. Marriage is a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and all that belongs to it is to be kept within that covenant in purity before the Lord. Whatever your unspoken burden may be, our prayer for you is that God would have mercy upon you in Jesus' name, that He would forgive sin, strengthen faith, deliver from evil, and grant you grace to walk in obedience and holiness. May He answer you not according to your picture of the answer, but according to His infinite wisdom and love, and may that answer bring honor to His name and nourish your love to Him as you look back upon manifold and manifest answers to prayer.
We will bear you before the throne together with you, asking the Holy Spirit to give you a solemn resolution to wait upon the Lord, to plead His promises believingly, and to trust Him though the vision tarry. Call upon Him in the day of trouble, and He has said, I will deliver you, and you shall glorify Me. Only have faith in God and obey and believe the text, and you shall find His promise true.
