There is no help for you in man alone, whether you look to the threshing floor or the winepress. If the Lord does not help you, where can any find help for you? This trouble with your device, filled with your important substance, is known to Him who numbers the very hairs of your head. Yet know this: your soul cries out in this small distress, and you cannot help it. When you are about your daily work you find yourself sighing for relief. Come, then, let your cry for help go up to our blessed Master, for unless He is your shield and help, you are undone. You may have Him, you may have Him now!

Consider that men stationed to help travelers on their way are but feeble types of the Helper God provides. It is not everyone who can help, but there is One who can. I cannot do much, but I can help. I cannot restore what is lost by my own power, but I can help. Beloved, you would not need any other plea if you knew how blessed it is to cast every care upon Him. You say you hope God will provide. You determine to set your own hands to work. This is well, yet remember that if you try to keep your affairs without asking the help of God, you will be like those guards who thought they held Peter fast, and in the morning found the prisoner escaped. Down you fall, as it were, and breathe the prayer, “God help me, God help me! Grant this may succeed.” Strike the match of prayer, for if that fails, you are left with no help, no pity from any earthly friend.

But come closer home to your conscience. Is it not possible that this very trial is meant to make you wrestle mightily with God, and so become a prevailing prince? May the Lord help you to be a mighty wrestler! A moral obligation rests upon me to give you this word: let not this small matter comfort you in any neglect of your soul’s great need. If there is a sin harbored within, it is to your soul’s peril. The case of the unsaved is a terrible one, and all honest men must say, “If the Lord does not help you, how can I help you?” Yet I would stir you up to seek His face for this temporal mercy, and far more, to seek the mercy of His salvation through Jesus Christ alone. He who helps in the little will not fail in the great. Come to Him now.

The distress over your failing machine reveals a soul clinging to what moth and rust destroy. Your computer holds important data, yet how much more urgent is the treasure of heaven, which no theft or decay can touch. The Spirit helps us in our weakness, not through the letter of the Law but by newness of life, and He has promised abundant aid to those who seek first the kingdom. Do you pursue the state of your hard drive with greater trembling than the state of your heart?

The disciples once thought they lacked loaves in the wilderness, and Christ brought them to an urgent need of entreating Him. So perhaps this small crisis is permitted that you might entreat the Lord not merely for a restored machine, but for a renewed mind. Seek practical help from a brother, for true friendship hinders what leads to destruction and builds up the soul. Yet in all your asking, examine whether you would grieve more over lost files than over a day lived without prayer.

Your anxiety shows you have not yet made the Lord your chief refuge. Trust His providence, do what lies before you with diligence, and commit even the smallest loss into His hands. The same grace that freed you from the dominion of sin will give you peace about the things of dust, if you will serve in newness of spirit rather than in the oldness of anxiety.

There is a hollow frustration that settles into the soul when the tools we depend upon suddenly fail. The anxiety over lost information, over a machine no longer working as it did before, can feel overwhelming because you have placed so much of your life within it. Yet this very moment of vexation is a window, revealing a truth Solomon understood long ago. That gnawing sense of emptiness, the feeling that things are not as they ought to be, is a symptom of a deeper spiritual thirst. It is your spirit crying out for more than any device filled with data can ever provide.

A computer, for all its marvel, is ultimately a dumb creation. It has no will; it cannot love you or hate you. It was designed to be a servant, and when it breaks, it reminds you that everything limited to this material world is subject to futility. You feel life must be more than just trying to keep your carefully ordered world from collapsing. That instinct is right. Jesus addresses this directly when He says, "If anyone thirsts, let him come to Me and drink." He is not speaking of a physical thirst for data recovery, but of the spiritual void that no amount of working technology can fill. All the knowledge being multiplied in our day, all the intricate records machines keep, still cannot heal a broken heart or restore a fractured spirit. Only He can straighten what has been made crooked.

Do not let the urgent need to repair the hardware distract you from the state of your inner house. Like the priests in the time of King Jehoash, it is easy to collect resources for the work and yet neglect the actual repairs of the breaches. Your computer holds records of everything you have done, yet God’s knowledge surpasses even that. The Bible tells us the secrets of the heart will one day be made manifest. When you stand before a holy God, the driving concern will not be whether your files were restored, but whether your spirit was made right. That is the ultimate repair, accomplished only by trusting in the finished work of Jesus Christ. He Himself endured a fiery furnace of judgment so that those who take refuge in Him are not consumed but delivered.

So by all means, seek help for your computer. Use the remarkable technology God has allowed us to steward for good purposes. But as you work to make that machine operate rightly again, look beyond the immediate crisis. Allow this frustration to drive you to the One who puts eternity in our hearts. A life lived purely for the things “under the sun” will always end in the same cycle of emptiness. A life yielded to the Spirit of God, however, is filled with a purpose that no power outage or hard drive failure can ever erase. Pray with me, asking not just for a working system, but for a heart aligned with the One who holds all knowledge and all power. He is able to restore the years the locusts have eaten, and certainly able to give you the peace that surpasses all understanding even while the screen is still dark.
