Physically, emotionally exhausted

Exhaustion tells you something true about being human. The body wears down, the mind frays, and you feel what Daniel described: no strength left, no breath in you. That is not a failure of faith; it is the limit built into the creature. When you lie down tonight, remember who the true door is. A shepherd in the field would lay his body across the opening of the sheepfold. He was the gate. Nothing could get to the sheep without crossing over him. As you sleep, Christ has placed Himself between you and everything that would steal your rest. He does not merely guard your door; He is your door.

You asked for peace. Scripture holds out a promise that often works exactly opposite to the way the world offers comfort. Peace does not come primarily by having all the exhaustion removed. It comes by having your mind stayed on Him. As your thoughts turn to the Lord, even in their weary, half-formed state, a peace that passes human understanding begins to settle in. The world cannot grasp this kind of calm, because it has no reference point for a confidence that stands outside circumstances. But the peace of God is first the peace with God. That was accomplished through the blood of Christ. The war with your Maker is over if you are His. And because that great conflict is resolved, a quiet can grow within the soul, even while the body aches for sleep.

Do not confuse a spiritual thirst with a physical or emotional need and try to quench it with the wrong relief. A chemical surge, a distraction, a new set of circumstances cannot reach the weariness in your spirit. Jesus said, “Come to me and drink.” The water He gives satisfies the deep, hidden thirst of a soul made for God. Let your mind rest on Him as you close your eyes. He is the strength of your life. Not strength you manufacture, but strength He gives: the strength of His hand that brought His people out of bondage. That same strong hand upholds you tonight.

The Lord will give strength to His people. The Lord will bless His people with peace. Let that be the frontlet between your eyes. Sleep in the confidence that He ordains peace for you, and that His beloved may rest without fear. Peace be to you. Be strong.
