It is a painful wound to be treated with kindness to your face while being torn down behind your back, and your sorrow is heard. The Lord Himself knew this pain. One of the twelve who dipped with Him in the dish betrayed Him with a kiss, giving a sign of friendship while handing Him over to those who came with swords and staves. He was gentle even to that traitor, to show that such two faced dealing has no excuse and that God sees what is hidden.

You are right to bring this to Christ rather than seeking revenge yourself. When someone slanders you to others, God is the one who will demand the account, not those who hear the slander. The slanderer adds to his own punishment before God, while you receive evil report only before men for a time. It is far better to leave the judgment to Him who knows all secrets and to guard your own lips, so you do not become a gossip in return. We are called to cover over the failings of others where we can, not to parade them, and to trust God to bring the truth to light in His time and in His way.

Let us pray together.

Lord Jesus Christ, You know the sting of betrayal and the pain of false words spoken in secret. You see what is done in darkness and You are the righteous Judge. We ask You to guard this Your servant from the harm of slander and lies, to protect his name and his heart from bitterness, and to give him peace and patience under this trial. If it is Your will, bring the truth into the light so that what is false is shown to be false. Work in the hearts of those who speak evil, convict them of their sin, and lead them to repentance and to the knowledge of Your mercy, that they may be saved and transformed. Keep this wounded one from repaying evil with evil, and make him steadfast in love, truth, and forgiveness, looking to You who endured all things for us. In Your holy name we pray, Amen.

We will continue to pray that God will vindicate what is true, shield you from further harm, and give you grace to walk uprightly while He deals with those who have wronged you.

It is deeply painful to experience what you are describing, when people act kind to your face and then speak against you when you are not present. That kind of two faced treatment feels like a betrayal, and it is right to bring that hurt to Jesus.

Jesus understands this pain personally. He was betrayed by one of His own close followers. People have offered many ideas about why Judas did what he did, including the thought that he was trying to force Jesus to take power and set up His kingdom on his own terms. Whatever the motive in his heart, the Lord knew what was happening. Long before, the prophet Zechariah foretold the very price that would be paid for that betrayal, thirty pieces of silver, which shows that God was not surprised or unaware. He sees what is done in secret and He knows the truth about every heart.

Scripture gives clear wisdom about slander. It calls the one who spreads slander a fool, and it contrasts the person who is always talking with the one who learns to hold back his words. Where there are many words, sin is not lacking. When someone continually talks about others, in time their true character is revealed by their own mouth. You do not have to force that exposure. A person who lives by slander will eventually make their own heart known.

For that reason you can entrust yourself to the Lord as your defender. It is understandable to want these people to be exposed right now, but God brings truth to light in His own perfect way and timing. Your part is to walk in integrity, to guard your own lips so you do not return evil for evil, and to leave room for God to be the judge. That does not mean the hurt is not real, it means you place the matter in hands that are far more just and powerful than your own.

Pray for protection and for peace, and even pray for those who are speaking against you, that God would work in their hearts and bring them to repentance. Ask Him to give you wisdom to know how to relate to them, to give you discernment, and to surround you with truthful and faithful people. Ask Him also to keep your heart from bitterness so that their sin does not become a trap for you.

May the Lord comfort you in this trial, guard your name and your heart, and in His time make the truth clear. May He help you to rest in the fact that He knows you fully, loves you completely through Jesus Christ, and will never speak falsely about you.

Thank you for giving us the privilege to pray on your behalf concerning the painful slander and libel you are experiencing. We are glad that you asked us to stand in agreement with you in prayer about those who pretend to be nice to your face while speaking against you behind your back. We understand how hurtful and discouraging it is when people put on an act in your presence and then speak all kinds of falsehood about you when you are not there, and we have continued to bring your burden before the Lord.

We pray in Jesus Name that the Lord will expose what has been spoken in secret and reveal these people for who they really are. We ask Him to bring truth into the light, to vindicate you where you have been falsely accused, to silence lying lips, and to protect your name and your heart from further harm. We pray that He will give you wisdom and discernment, guard you with His peace, and let His justice and truth prevail. We cling to the promise that nothing hidden will remain concealed, for it is written there is nothing hidden that will not be disclosed Luke 8:17, and He will make your righteous reward shine like the dawn Psalm 37:6.
