Many a man has been ruined by that sort of prosperity, the soft days and summer seasons of ease have bred pride and luxury, and men have forgotten their God. The devil often throws the children of God into the fires of adversity, and when they do not yield, he tries them with prosperity, honor, and esteem, and many have made shipwreck there. Be careful that your desire for advancement in this world does not become a snare to your soul.

What is your life as a steward? This is the main point, nothing is your own, it is all your Master’s. In times of abundance it is tragically easy to let our hearts wander into self-reliance or the pursuit of more things, and that very prosperity can weaken our devotion. But when we serve the Lord with gladness for all He gives, and we allow His goodness to lead us into deeper surrender, the blessing remains pure and life-giving.

Remember, too, that God’s design is never simply to fill our own baskets. He blesses us so that we may become a channel of blessing to others. Like a fruitful vine whose branches run over the wall, our prosperity should spill beyond our own needs and refresh those around us. The most remarkable example of giving I have ever seen came from believers who themselves were in deep poverty, yet out of their overflowing joy they begged for the privilege of helping poor brothers and sisters in another region. Their liberality flowed from hearts captured by God’s grace, not from their bank balance. That is the kind of prosperity that lasts: a life so saturated with God’s goodness that even if He gives more than we can handle, we respond by dedicating everything back to Him.
