Peace

We hear your cry for peace in your home and for your husband who is struggling with drinking, and we join with you in seeking God's will together in Jesus' name.

We understand how deeply alcohol can steal peace from a marriage and a household. The Lord is clear that drunkenness is not His will for any believer or for any family. Wine is a mocker and beer is a brawler. Whoever is led astray by them is not wise. Proverbs 20:1. And we are commanded, Don't be drunken with wine, in which is dissipation, but be filled with the Spirit, Ephesians 5:18. This is not said to condemn without hope, but to show that this pattern is sin that harms the one who drinks and those who love him, and it needs to be rebuked, repented of, and forsaken. We love your husband as God does and we want to see him delivered and restored, not judged and left in bondage.

Marriage is a holy covenant before God between a man and a woman for life, and God desires that your marriage be a place of love, sobriety, safety and peace. We pray that God will strengthen you to honor that covenant while not enabling sin. That means loving your husband faithfully, praying for him earnestly, speaking truth in love, and seeking wise godly counsel and accountability from your pastor or mature believers in the church. The insistent prayer of a righteous person is powerfully effective, James 5:16, and a wife's faithful prayers and godly conduct can have great influence as you entrust your husband to the Lord.

We also want to gently point out that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We bring this up because there is no other way for us to come to the Father or to find true and lasting peace except through Him. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. And there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. It is only by believing in Jesus, that He died for our sins and rose again, that we are forgiven and have access to God in prayer. If you have not already, we encourage you to put your complete trust in Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior, and to pray in His name, for He alone is our peace and our deliverer.

We know you are longing for peace that the world and alcohol can never give. True peace comes from God Himself. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7. Jesus said, Peace I leave with you. My peace I give to you; not as the world gives, give I to you. Don't let your heart be troubled, neither let it be fearful, John 14:27. You will keep whoever's mind is steadfast in perfect peace, because he trusts in you, Isaiah 26:3. We encourage you to cast all your worries on him, because he cares for you, 1 Peter 5:7, and to keep your mind stayed on Christ even while you wait for your husband to turn from this bondage.

We pray together for you and your husband now.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our only Savior and mediator. We lift up this dear wife and her marriage to You and ask for Your perfect peace to fill her heart and her home. Lord, we ask You to convict her husband of the sin of drunkenness and to open his eyes to the harm it is causing to himself, to his wife, and to his family. Deliver him, Lord, from this bondage, break the chains of addiction, and fill him instead with Your Holy Spirit. Bring him to repentance and to faith in Jesus if he does not yet know You, and restore him to sobriety, to sound mind, and to loving leadership in his marriage. Comfort this wife, give her wisdom to speak truth in love, to set healthy boundaries without bitterness, and to seek godly support around her. Guard her heart with Your peace that surpasses all understanding and keep her mind steadfast as she trusts in You. Let this marriage be healed and made strong to honor You, and let Your will be done in both their lives. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ, amen.

We hear how heavy this has been, wanting peace in your home while your husband is drinking. It is exhausting to live on edge, never knowing what the evening will bring, and we are grateful you reached out.

One thing that helps many wives in this place is recognizing we cannot make the choice to stop drinking for someone else, even when we love them deeply and have tried everything. That does not mean you are powerless or alone. It means your peace and health matter too, and you can get support for yourself whether or not he is ready to seek help.

When you are able, it may help to talk with one steady, trusted person this week, a pastor, a counselor, or a mature friend who will listen without trying to fix everything at once. Many churches also have a recovery or family support group where loved ones of those who drink can share honestly and learn healthy boundaries. If drinking ever makes you feel unsafe in your home, please reach out right away to a trusted person nearby and consider speaking with a counselor or pastor about a safety plan.

We are carrying you in prayer and we would be honored to keep praying with you. You do not have to sort all of this out today.

Father, we lift this wife to You and ask for Your nearness and protection over her home. Give her wisdom for each next decision, strength for today, and people around her who will listen and support her well. Guard her heart with Your peace and lead her husband toward honesty and help. We ask this in Jesus' name, amen.

Your longing for perfect peace within a troubled home has been heard and is carried to the throne of grace with much tenderness and prayer.

There is a peace which this dark world of sin cannot give and cannot take away, for the blood of Jesus whispers peace within. It is written, You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. This is not the false peace where men cry peace, peace where there is no peace, nor a mere lull of stupefaction over sin, but a true and abiding peace which is a blessing from the Lord Himself. It is peace with God through the atonement made by His Son, and peace in the conscience as the crystal stream which flows from that fountain. It is His peace, not as the world gives, calm and profound and unruffled, the very peace of the eternal Son of God.

I pray that this perfect peace may be your present possession even while sorrows surge around you and duties press heavily. To do the will of Jesus, this is rest. To bear your sorrow with Him, to tell your Husband and Lord what you cannot tell to another, is to find rest in the house of your Husband. He has been a Husband to His people in faithful love, in communion most loving, and in provision for all their need, and as it is said, the men of grace have found glory begun below. Celestial fruits may yet grow on earthly ground when the heart is stayed upon Christ.

For your husband, we plead earnestly before the Lord. Drunkenness brings sorrow and wounds to the soul and to the marriage covenant which God has ordained as a lifelong union of one man and one woman, and we do not ask God to bless that which harms and dishonors Him. Rather we ask Him to work conviction, repentance and perfect restoration. As Peter fell and was restored by the look of Christ and by the prevailing prayer of Christ who said I have prayed for you, so we pray that your husband may be turned again, that he may be severed from the crowd of temptation and sin, and may hear the voice of the Lord calling him to return to his first love and to sobriety. We pray that he may be uplifted from where the adversary has sifted him, and be converted anew in heart and life, to the strengthening of his own soul and of your home.

For you, we pray that the Lord will keep your mind stayed upon Him, that you may enjoy great peace as one who loves His law, and that nothing shall offend or overthrow you. May the peace of God which passes all understanding guard your heart and mind through Christ Jesus. May you know that though loved ones may seem far away by reason of sin or sorrow, in Jesus keeping we are safe. And may you find wise and godly help near at hand, the counsel and support of faithful ministers and brethren in the church, that you may not bear this burden alone, and that your husband may be surrounded by those who will lovingly call him to forsake strong drink and to walk in holiness.

We will continue to pray that the Lord who is the Prince of Peace will bless you with peace, renew your peace day by day, and bring deliverance and healing into your household, to the glory of His name who alone is our salvation through Jesus Christ.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Your request for peace in your home while your husband struggles with drinking has been heard, and I join you in bringing it before the Lord with care and seriousness.

Scripture teaches us to follow peace with all people, and holiness, which includes chaste and orderly living in marriage. Marriage is honorable, and God intends it to be a place of order, gentleness and gravity, not of disorder or excess. When drunkenness enters a home it overturns that order and brings heaviness and strife where there should be calm and mutual honor. It is right to desire deliverance from it and to seek peace.

You are called to a difficult and holy path. The apostle says God has called us in peace, and that the wife should not depart from her husband lightly, but remain and seek his good. He also says, how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband. Your faithful, gentle and orderly life, your meekness and propriety, can be a powerful witness. This does not mean you are to endure harm alone or to pretend that sin is not sin. It means you are to seek the Lord's help with steadiness, to not return evil for evil, and to let your conduct be shaped by virtue rather than by fear or resentment.

Commit this matter fully into the hands of Christ. As you would seek a good gift, first beseech Him to be present in your home. Pray in this way, and encourage your husband to do the same when he is sober and able to hear. Ask the Lord to grant him a clear mind, a desire for sobriety, and repentance that leads to new life. Ask that you may be strengthened to live with wisdom, patience and holiness, and that your home may be guarded by peace.

I pray for you now. Heavenly Father, in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son, through whom alone is salvation, have mercy on this home. Bring peace where there is turmoil, and set this husband free from bondage to drink. Grant him sobriety, humility and a heart to seek You. Grant his wife strength, wisdom, safety and perseverance, and surround her with faithful counsel and support from the church. Let this marriage reflect Your order and grace, that both may walk in holiness and know the sweetness of a life lived according to Your will. Guide them to walk in truth, to forsake what harms the soul and the household, and to find joy in what is good and pure. Amen.

Continue to seek wise and godly help near you, pastors and mature believers who can walk with you both, counsel your husband toward sobriety, and help guard peace and safety in the home. Keep praying, keep choosing what is orderly and good, and trust the Lord to work in His time.

Your longing for peace in your home matters deeply to God and I am praying with you for that peace to come.

Scripture teaches that God has called us to peace in marriage, not to live in constant warfare. That does not mean every problem disappears, but it does mean His desire for your home is not endless strife and turmoil. Marriage is a covenant where two become one, a deep unity that God created, and His heart is for that union to be marked by care and kindness between husband and wife, each seeking the good of the other.

The same Jesus who stood in the boat and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, peace be still, is the one who spoke with authority to unclean spirits and they had to leave. The word used for rebuking the storm is the same as for rebuking a spirit. He has authority over what feels chaotic and out of control. When the wind stopped there was a great calm, and the people asked what kind of man this is. He is the Son of God, and He still speaks peace into storms today. I am praying He will speak that kind of calming authority over your home and over the struggle with drinking that is stealing peace.

God also shows us that marriage is bound as long as both are living, and that His call is to walk faithfully where He has placed us. There is a word that asks, how do you know, wife, whether you will save your husband. Your faithful prayers, your life lived in the grace of Jesus, and your quiet trust in Him can be a powerful witness. Only God can change a heart, and only salvation through Jesus Christ brings true freedom, but He often uses the prayers and love of a spouse in that work.

Please do not carry this alone. The kingdom of God is righteousness and joy and peace, and He wants that peace to be real in your daily life. Bring this before the Lord honestly, ask Him to bring conviction and freedom where alcohol has a hold, and ask Him to guard your heart and home. Seek wise, godly counsel and practical help from trusted believers and from those who can help with drinking problems, and if there is ever any danger in the home, seek safety and help right away. Keep praying for your husband's salvation and deliverance, for your own strength and calm, and for God to be the one who says peace be still over your household.

I am praying that Jesus will meet you with His presence, that He will say go in peace and make you whole, that He will calm the storm around you and within you, and that He will draw your husband to Himself and bring true and lasting peace to your marriage.
