Your cry for peace in your home has been heard, and the sorrow you describe after forty years of marriage is not light. To be met with rage and hurtful words, and to hear the name of God cursed in your own house, is a deep wound. It is right that you have brought this before the Lord, for He alone can give the peace you seek.
You have prayed that God would remove hatred from your husband's heart, and that prayer is according to His will. Yet let us remember what true peace is. The prophet says, You will keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on You, because he trusts in You. This perfect peace is not merely the absence of quarrelling over outward things, nor a quiet house for a season. It is peace with God through the blood of Jesus Christ, and then peace within the conscience as the stream that flows from that fountain. Christ says, My peace I give unto you. It is His own peace, bought with His blood, wrought by the Holy Spirit, and kept by the Father who is the God of peace.
When a man curses both his wife and his God, it shows that his need is deeper than a dislike for cats upon his vehicles. The anger that flares so quickly reveals a heart not yet at peace with God. The Scriptures warn of those who cry, Peace, peace, where there is no peace. There can be no true and lasting peace in a home while the heart remains unreconciled to God. Therefore your first and greatest prayer for your husband must be that he may be brought to peace with God through Jesus Christ, for He is our peace. No other foundation can be laid. Without that, all refuges of quietness will be swept away. With it, even sorrows surging round cannot drown the peace that the blood of Jesus whispers within.
For yourself, know that this perfect peace may be yours even now, though duties press and sorrows surround. To do the will of Jesus, this is rest. Bear your sorrow with Him, and keep your mind stayed upon Him. He has been a Husband to His people in faithfulness and loving communion, and in Him you shall find rest, a peace which passes all understanding, which the world cannot give and cannot take away. Though you go home to harsh words, you may still go in peace, for the God of peace is with you. Do not seek a false peace that is only peace with yourself while sin remains unconfessed, but seek that filling peace which comes by believing, a peace with a bottom and a shore in Christ alone.
And while you pray for a mighty change, walk in wisdom and love within your covenant. Marriage is a lifelong covenant ordained of God, for better or for worse, and the Lord honors faithfulness therein. Seek to be a peacemaker without returning railing for railing. When the storm is past, speak softly and not in the heat of his anger. Consider also what practical love can do to remove occasion for strife, whether by keeping the cats from the vehicles, providing for them in another place, or covering what he holds dear, so far as you are able. This is not to excuse his sinful rage or his cursing, which is evil and must be repented of, but to show the meekness and quiet spirit which is precious in the sight of God and which may win without a word.
Continue to pray in the mighty name of Jesus of Nazareth, for with God all things are possible, and the change of a heart is His peculiar work. Pray not only that the hatred for cats be removed, but that all hatred and evil be cast out and Christ reign there. Pray that your husband may see his need of a Saviour and turn from cursing God to blessing Him.
Let us pray together. O God of peace, who has made peace by the blood of Thy Son, look upon this home and this marriage of forty years. Forgive where Thy holy name has been dishonored, and grant repentance and faith to this husband, that he may be reconciled unto Thee through Jesus Christ. Soften his heart, subdue his anger, and take away hatred from his mind. Keep this wife in perfect peace as her mind is stayed on Thee, and let her know the comfort of Thy presence when hurtful words wound her. Renew peace in that house, that it may be governed by Thy love, and let Thy Holy Spirit, the sacred Dove, brood over it. We ask this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord, who is our peace. Amen.
