Peace and healing

Your longing for peace and for healing of deep wounds is something God Himself desires to answer. He wants you to live in peace and He has held out a peace treaty to you. By nature we are at war with God and at enmity with Him because of sin, and as long as that war continues there is a turmoil inside that tears at the heart and no real peace can be found.

That is why peace with God must come first, and it only comes through Jesus Christ. He made peace through His blood shed on the cross, breaking down the wall between us and God. When sins are forgiven through Him the war is over. You are no longer running from God or fighting against Him, and that brings peace within. The restlessness that has been destroying you inside can be quieted because you are reconciled to Him.

Then there is the peace of God that keeps your daily life. Scripture promises that God will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him, because that person trusts in Him. Jesus said to His disciples, My peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives. The world cannot understand this peace, and it passes all human understanding as it guards the heart and mind in Christ. It comes as you turn your thoughts toward Him and trust Him to take care of what you cannot carry. When your mind rests on Him, His peace begins to fill your heart even while the world around you remains full of chaos and strife.

God also hears your cry for healing and answers it together with His peace. He says, peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near, I will heal him. Whether you feel far from Him or near to Him today, His offer is the same, forgiveness, restoration and healing. For those who continue in rebellion there is no peace, they remain like a troubled sea, but when a person turns to Jesus and receives His forgiveness there is a deep and beautiful peace within.

Healing is part of that work, and God heals in many ways. Sometimes it is immediate, sometimes it is gradual, like a wound that slowly closes. He has built healing processes into our bodies and He also heals the wounds that are not physical, the scars in the mind and emotions that have cut so deeply. He can do a healing in the heart that restores what has been broken. We do not always understand why healing comes in the way or timing that it does, but we do know He is the healer and that His thoughts toward you are thoughts of peace, to give you hope and an expected end.

So I pray for you now that you will first know you have peace with God through faith in Jesus Christ, and then that you will know the daily peace of God keeping your heart and mind. May He lift the inner war and replace it with His quietness, and may He touch those deep wounds and bring His restoring healing. As you keep your mind fixed on Him and trust Him day by day, may you find that His peace remains and His healing work continues in you, and may you reap the fruit of righteousness that comes to those who walk in His peace. In Jesus name, amen.
