I am going thru terrible anxiety and it is causing my body to become sick. The anxiety is triggering my Lyme disease. I am worried about a past mistake I made and not sure how to correct it. I have been praying about it everyday. The anxiety is too much.

We hear the weight of your struggle, and our hearts ache with you as you battle both the physical torment of Lyme disease and the relentless grip of anxiety over a past mistake. You are not alone in this, we stand with you before the throne of grace, where mercy and help are found in time of need (Hebrews 4:16). The enemy would love nothing more than to keep you bound in shame and fear, but we declare that Jesus came to set the captives free (Luke 4:18). His blood was shed not only for salvation but for the cleansing of every sin, every regret, and every weight that seeks to crush you.

First, we must address the truth of the Gospel: if you have confessed this mistake to the Lord and turned from it, then it has been forgiven. "If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). The anxiety you feel does not come from God, for He has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power, love, and a sound mind (2 Timothy 1:7). The enemy will try to convince you that your past defines you, but Scripture declares that in Christ, you are a new creation, the old has passed away, and behold, the new has come (2 Corinthians 5:17). If you have not yet fully surrendered this burden to Jesus, we urge you to do so now. Lay it at the foot of the cross and leave it there, trusting in His finished work.

Now, let us consider whether this mistake requires correction. If it involves sin against another person, Scripture is clear: "If therefore you are offering your gift at the altar, and there remember that your brother has anything against you, leave your gift there before the altar, and go your way. First be reconciled to your brother, and then come and offer your gift" (Matthew 5:23-24). If reconciliation is possible and would not cause further harm, we encourage you to take steps toward making it right, whether through confession, restitution, or seeking forgiveness. But if the situation is beyond repair or would only bring more pain, then we must trust that God’s grace is sufficient (2 Corinthians 12:9). Some wounds are meant to be healed by His hand alone, not by our own efforts.

For the anxiety that rages within you, we rebuke it in the name of Jesus. The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, is available to guard your heart and mind in Christ Jesus (Philippians 4:7). We encourage you to meditate on Scripture, replacing the lies of the enemy with the truth of God’s Word. Speak aloud the promises of God over your life: "Cast all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you" (1 Peter 5:7). "The Lord is my light and my salvation, whom shall I fear? The Lord is the strength of my life, of whom shall I be afraid?" (Psalm 27:1). Anxiety may feel overwhelming, but it does not have the final say. Jesus has already overcome the world (John 16:33), and in Him, you are more than a conqueror (Romans 8:37).

We also lift up your physical body, which is bearing the brunt of this spiritual and emotional battle. Lyme disease is a real and painful affliction, but we serve a God who heals. "He sent His word, and healed them, and delivered them from their destructions" (Psalm 107:20). We pray for divine healing to flow through your body, for strength in your weakness, and for the Lord to guide you to wise and godly medical care. Do not neglect the practical steps of rest, nourishment, and seeking support from those who can walk alongside you in this season.

Let us pray together now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You with heavy hearts, lifting up our dear brother/sister who is weighed down by anxiety and physical sickness. Lord, You see the depths of their struggle, and You are near to the brokenhearted (Psalm 34:18). We ask that You would break the chains of fear and shame that have taken hold. Remind them of the power of the cross, where their sin was nailed and defeated. Let them experience the freedom that comes from knowing they are forgiven and redeemed.

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of anxiety in the name of Jesus. We declare that it has no place in their life, for You have not given them a spirit of fear. Fill them instead with Your peace, which surpasses all understanding. Guard their heart and mind in Christ Jesus. Where there is a need for reconciliation, give them wisdom and courage to take the necessary steps. Where there is no path to restoration, let them trust in Your grace to heal and restore what has been broken.

Father, we also pray for their physical healing. Touch their body with Your healing hand. Strengthen their immune system, ease their pain, and restore their health. Guide them to the right doctors, treatments, and care that will bring relief and wholeness. Surround them with a community of believers who will uphold them in prayer and support.

Lord, we thank You that You are a God who turns ashes into beauty, mourning into joy, and despair into hope (Isaiah 61:3). We trust that You are working all things together for their good, even in this difficult season (Romans 8:28). Fill them with Your Holy Spirit, that they may walk in the fullness of life You have promised.

In the mighty name of Jesus, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to stand firm in the truth that God is for you, not against you (Romans 8:31). The enemy may whisper lies, but the Word of God declares your victory. Surround yourself with believers who can speak life into your situation and hold you accountable to the truth. If this anxiety persists, consider seeking godly counsel from a pastor or Christian counselor who can help you walk through this with biblical wisdom. You are not defined by your past, but by the One who holds your future. Keep pressing into Him, He will not fail you.

We hear how exhausting this has become, when anxiety presses hard enough to stir up a physical illness, it’s a heavy load to carry alone. Please know we’re taking this seriously, and we’re with you in it.

Sometimes the mind gets stuck replaying something we regret, as if we could manage the outcome by sheer anguish. That loop can convince us we have to fix it entirely before we’re allowed to breathe. But that kind of relentless pressure often causes more harm than the original mistake ever did. God isn’t sitting back, waiting for you to correct everything perfectly before He meets you. His mercy is already in the room with you, right in the middle of the mess.

It’s worth gently asking: Is there a concrete step you can take, sending a letter, apologizing, restoring something tangible, or is this something outside your ability to set right? If there’s a step, you might start there, even a small one, with a trusted friend or pastor supporting you. But if it’s truly beyond your hands, the act of repeatedly trying to “correct” it may be feeding the anxiety rather than solving anything. That’s not weakness; it’s being human. Sometimes the move forward is learning to hand it over and stop treating yourself as the one who must somehow atone.

Also, when anxiety begins triggering a physical condition like Lyme, it’s wise to let your doctor know what’s happening. They can help manage the body’s stress response and the flare-up, which can give you a calmer foundation to sort through the rest.

We’re grateful you’re still praying. Keep opening your hands in honesty, God can handle your fear, your confusion, and your need for relief.

Lord Jesus, we ask You to step into this place of turmoil. Quiet the racing thoughts and ease the physical symptoms that have flared up. Grant our friend a clear sense of what can be done, and the courage to release what can’t. Wrap them in Your peace, and let them know, even now, that they don’t have to earn Your love or outrun their past. Heal body and mind, we pray, and surround them with the right people to walk this out. In Your name, Amen.

The very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. At the present moment you are in such a fidget and flutter that you are very apt to mistake your right hand for your left and to put bitter for sweet, and sweet for bitter! Do not be so affected by external things as to get into a state of worry, fretfulness, care, anxiety and distress. When you have done your best with your little, do not worry because you cannot make it more.

But this past mistake, this is the thorn in your flesh, the weight upon your chest that makes your Lyme disease cry out with fresh torment. You say you are not sure how to correct it, and so the mind spins without rest. Hear then what the Spirit says to your soul: "There is forgiveness." Let this whisper drive away despair! What a blessed whisper it is! "There is forgiveness." Let it enter your soul and drive those grim ogres and hobgoblins of despair away into the sea of forgetfulness. "There is forgiveness."

Notice the broad indefiniteness of the text, "There is forgiveness." It does not say, "There is forgiveness for this sin or for that," but, "There is forgiveness." Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any! O man, let me catch you in my arms and tell you that "there is forgiveness!" However sinful your life may have been up until now, there is forgiveness with God even for you! The completeness of this forgiveness staggers the mind, it is a divine forgiveness. "I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions for mine own sake, and will not remember thy sins." It is a deed of forgiveness, an absolute forgiveness of the debt incurred. If you have been the chief of sinners, you may have the chief of sinner’s forgiveness, and God can bestow it now.

You are anxious to run away from Him, but that is where the forgiveness is, with God! Where the offense went, from that very place the forgiveness comes, "There is forgiveness with You." And let it be remembered that this forgiveness which God has given us for Christ’s sake is an eternal forgiveness. Not only did He forgive us at the first all our sins, but He continues daily to forgive, for the act of forgiveness is a continuous one. There was forgiveness, there is forgiveness, there will be forgiveness as long as life lasts. As soon as you trust in your crucified God, all your sins are forgiven, whether past, present, or to come. Even supposing that you are yet to commit them, they are all pardoned.

This shows how perfect is our forgiveness, nay, I must put it, how divine is the forgiveness which we have received. He not only forgave us at the first all our sins, but he continues daily to forgive. We have in him a full forgiveness. Therefore we come to you, not merely with a hopeful whisper, but with a full, distinct, emphatic, unquestionable assurance, "There is forgiveness." "There is forgiveness." That is a matter of certainty. Turn to this Word of God and you will find the certainty of forgiveness. "I believe in the forgiveness of sins."

Now, why does the body suffer so? See how the Savior dealt with the man sick of the palsy: He first said, "Son, thy sins be forgiven thee," and then, "Arise, take up thy bed, and walk." First forgiveness, then healing. He lay there, in the Presence of Jesus, hoping and expecting forgiveness and healing. If you believe that Christ can save you and if your one anxiety is to be laid at His feet that He may look upon you, and save you, He will assuredly accept you. "Him that cometh to me I will in no wise cast out." Do as Martin Luther did, in the days of his dark distress, when a brother monk said to him, "Do you not believe in the Creed, and do you not say, 'I believe in the forgiveness of sins'? Now believe in the forgiveness of sins for yourself." There is forgiveness, but that forgiveness is only to be obtained from God, through Jesus Christ, His Son. It must be, there is forgiveness since Jesus died, "the Just for the unjust, that He might bring us to God."

And I want you to remember who it is that sends the forgiveness. Yet He says, even He, "There is forgiveness." Let me proclaim to every sinner here who acknowledges his indebtedness to God and feels that he can never discharge it, that if you will come and put your trust in Christ, the Lord promises oblivion to all your debt, forgiveness of the whole of your sins! This past mistake, whatever it is, belongs to the catalogue of debts Christ has paid. He was ruined and you are being fattened by His mistake, no, not mistake, but by His substitutionary sorrow. Do not hold yourself to a bondage He has broken. There was forgiveness, but I neglected to seek it! There was forgiveness, but I did not realize that I needed it, so I have perished by my own folly." Do not let that be your epitaph. One more step and you may be where there is no forgiveness, but where the black and terrible pall of despair shall hang over your soul forever! But now, at this moment, there is forgiveness. He is absolutely, irreversibly, eternally forgiven, for "the gifts and calling of God are without repentance." He never plays fast and loose with men.

"Yes, those that believe in Christ have the complete forgiveness of every sin! As for me, I like to sing with Kent, 'Here's pardon for transgressions past,

It matters not how black their cast

And O my Soul, with wonder view,

For sins to come here's pardon too!'

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

The anxiety you feel is a heavy burden, yet it witnesses to a conscience not yet deadened by sin. For the disease of sin, when it is felt, is already halfway to cure; the truly desperate case is when one rejoices in evil and feels no pain. Your sorrow shows that the ill savor of your past deed has reached your own senses. As I have often said, when a man is not sensible of the foul odor, that is the grievous part of the disease, and the incurable state. So do not despise this anxiety entirely, but let it be a sharp spur toward the Physician.

But let not this anxiety become a second sickness. You see how desponding anxiety disfigures even the beauty of the body and stirs up your bodily infirmity. Earthly loveliness is liable to be destroyed by nothing so much as by anxiety and disease; it withers and passes. The Lord does not desire your destruction but your healing. Remember the paralytic who for thirty-eight years waited by the pool, each year hoping, never withdrawing. The Lord found him and asked, “Will you be made whole?” So He asks you now. The correction of a past mistake is not found in endless fretting, which only clouds the mind like a disordered eye, making all things appear distorted. Instead, bring your infirmity directly to Christ, as the lame were brought up the mountain and cast at His feet in simple faith.

Perhaps the worsening of your Lyme disease is permitted so that, through the scourging of the flesh, the soul may receive healing. The Lord often punishes the body for the transgressions of the soul, as a physician applies external cautery for a dropsy that refuses internal remedies. So Paul delivered the sinner to Satan for the destruction of the flesh, that the spirit might be saved. And to the healed paralytic Christ gave the command, “Sin no more, lest a worse thing come unto thee.” Therefore, bring your sin into the open before God, make what amends you can by a changed life, and then leave it at His feet. Cease from the excessive sorrow that feeds on itself and breeds only confusion and sickness.

The powerful Name of Jesus is an ointment poured forth. Call upon it with faith, and it will drive away these tyrannous thoughts more surely than any bodily remedy. If it does not immediately remove the affliction, that is not from lack of power, but because it is expedient for you to bear this thorn a while longer, that your trust may be perfected. Keep praying, not as one who merely moans over a past wound, but as one who lays hold of the promise of wholeness. Cultivate the beauty of the soul, which no anxiety can wither, no disease disfigure; that beauty is ever blooming, ever in its prime, far above these earthly troubles. The harlot who anointed Christ’s feet filled the house with fragrance; you, by true repentance and steadfast hope, can fill your soul with the sweet odor of peace. Sin no more, and the worse thing will not come; rather, even this present sickness will prove to be a medicine for eternal health.
