Beloved Servant
Please pray for my family. My dad just sent a weird message to me on my phone and I don't know if he's gotten into a fight with my mom or what. My parents have a dysfunctional relationship, both believe they are Christians but they are actually very confused. Their relationship has been exhausting for all their children. Please pray about all this. Thank you.

We have heard your request and we are lifting you and your whole family before the Lord together in Jesus name. We understand how unsettling it is to receive a strange message from your father and to not know what is happening between your parents, and how exhausting it has been for you and your siblings to live in the middle of a dysfunctional marriage. We cast all your worries on Him because He cares for you as it says in 1 Peter 5:7, and we ask the Lord to guard your heart with His peace.

We want to share what Scripture teaches about marriage and family. We believe marriage is a sacred lifelong covenant between one man and one woman, created by God for His glory. What therefore God has joined together, let no man separate, Matthew 19:6. God's design is for husbands and wives to love and honor one another, to put away all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you, Ephesians 4:31-32. Above all these things, walk in love, which is the bond of perfection, Colossians 3:14. When that design is not followed, the whole household suffers, and children grow weary, which is what you are experiencing. We pray your parents will turn to the Lord in true humility and seek to love each other as Christ loves the church, not in confusion but in truth and obedience.

You mentioned that both of your parents believe they are Christians but are actually very confused. We say this with love and concern, it is only through Jesus Christ that we have access to God and that anyone can be truly saved. We noticed your request did not mention the name of Jesus, and we want to gently remind you of this truth because there is no other hope. Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6. There is salvation in none other, for neither is there any other name under heaven, that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. To be a Christian is more than believing in a general way, it is to repent of sin, to believe in your heart that God raised Jesus from the dead and to confess Him as Lord. If anyone confesses with their mouth that Jesus is Lord and believes in their heart that God raised Him from the dead, they will be saved, Romans 10:9. We pray that both your mother and father will examine their hearts and come to a genuine saving faith in Jesus, and that their marriage will be built on that solid Rock rather than on confusion.

We also pray for you as their child. God calls us to honor our father and mother, Exodus 20:12, even when the relationship is difficult, and at the same time He invites us to bring our anxieties to Him. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus, Philippians 4:6-7. Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest, Matthew 11:28.

Together we pray, Father in heaven, we come before You in the name of Jesus Christ Your Son. We lift up this family to You. You see this dad and mom and their children, You know the message that was sent and any conflict that may be happening between them. We ask that You bring Your truth and Your peace into that home. Convict both parents where there is sin, pride, anger or unforgiveness, and draw them to true repentance and faith in Jesus. Heal their marriage and help them to love, cherish, forgive and honor one another as You have commanded. Protect these children from bitterness and exhaustion and give them wisdom to respond with grace, respect and healthy boundaries while still honoring their parents. Give this dear one who requested prayer discernment to know how to reach out to their dad with love and calm, and comfort them while they wait for answers. Let Your will be done in this family and let Your name be glorified. We ask all this in the precious name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to seek the Lord in prayer for wisdom before you respond to your dad, to speak the truth in love and to avoid being drawn into taking sides. If it is safe and possible, a calm and loving reply asking if he is okay and if you can help may open the door for clarity. Continue to pray for your parents daily, and if there is a mature pastor or biblical counselor you trust, consider seeking their guidance for how to navigate this ongoing strain. We will continue to keep you and your family in prayer, trusting that God is at work even when things feel confusing and exhausting.

Thank you for letting us know what is happening at home. Getting a strange message from your dad and not knowing what it means would unsettle anyone, especially when you have already been carrying the weight of your parents' difficult relationship for a long time. It makes sense you feel exhausted and confused.

It can be so hard to love both parents while also feeling worn down by the tension between them. You are not responsible to fix their marriage or to figure out everything that happened between them, even though you care deeply.

One simple way to care for yourself and for them in a moment like this is to keep your role clear. If you feel safe to do so, a brief, kind reply to your dad like asking if he is okay and if he and your mom are safe can give you a little clarity without pulling you into the middle. You do not need to mediate or take sides. It can also help to not carry this alone, talking with a trusted sibling, family friend or pastor who knows your family and can support you as you decide next steps.

Father, we bring this family to You in Jesus' name. We ask for safety and calm in this home tonight, for wisdom for this child who loves their parents, and for peace that guards their heart while they wait for answers. Lead this family toward help and toward You, and give them rest from this exhaustion. Amen.

We have heard your burden and we carry it with you to the throne of grace. To live in a home where the relationship between father and mother is strained and exhausting is a deep and wearing trial, and to receive a strange message and not know whether a new wound has been opened is enough to cast a child into anxiety. The Lord knows this heaviness.

There is comfort for such brokenness in Christ our Physician. The Scripture says He heals the broken in heart and binds up their wounds. The desertion and unkindness that can happen even between parents and children, the fickleness and strife that weary a household, are among those sorrows which break the heart, but He with bands of grace will bind up the wounds of His own. We very speedily seek a physician for bodily disease because it will not let us slumber, how much more should we seek the great Physician for the diseases of the soul and of the home.

We are reminded that the leaves of the tree of life were for the healing of the nations, and that the least thing about Christ is healing. Not only His fruit but His leaves are full of healing virtue. These healing leaves change the life blood and make the nature other than it was before. There is an abundance of healing power in Jesus Christ and His salvation, and overwhelming evidence shows how much every family and every nation needs such healing.

Healing and pardon are placed in happy conjunction in the gospel. When Jesus healed the sick He said, your sins are forgiven you, for pardon and healing are one in His hand. When the Lord comes to dwell with His people the Sun of Righteousness rises with healing in His wings. This is our prayer for your parents, that they may not rest in a confused profession but may be brought to true forgiveness through faith in Jesus Christ alone, for only then will true healing come to their lives and to their marriage. God has joined marriage as a lifelong covenant of one man and one woman, and it is only as both hearts are renewed by grace and submit to His Word that such a union can know peace and faithfulness.

So we pray for you and for your household. O Lord, look upon this family which is wearied and confused. Grant pardon through the blood of Christ and let healing flow therefrom. Heal the broken hearts of these children who are exhausted by strife. Heal the father and the mother, forgive their sins, give them new hearts and right spirits, that their home may be sobered and blessed by Divine grace. Let the healing virtue of Thy grace work health and cure till that which is wounded is bound up. Give wisdom to this dear one who waits and watches, that in quiet trust and prayer and in speaking the truth in love, they may look to Thee who alone can restore. Establish in that home what is pleasing to Thee, and let all that is done there be sweetened by love for Christ.

We will continue to bear you up before the Lord, asking that you may prove the power of Christ to heal and to forgive, and that out of that healing you may be kept in peace while you wait upon Him.
