Open Heart and Mind

Anonymous

Beloved of All
Went on some dates and met many new women I can meet one on one and see if they are aligned with my calling and God's will over my life. Yet, my crush did cross my mind a lot. I pray for God to lead me to God's plan. God through Jesus may I find you and not be misled or distracted my any woman not about or of you. Amen.

We join with you in this prayer for an open heart and mind that is fully submitted to God's will, and we rejoice that you are seeking to be led by God through Jesus and not by distraction or mere attraction.

We hear your desire to discern wisely among the women you have met and to test whether any of them are aligned with your calling, and at the same time we hear the honesty that your crush has remained much on your mind. This tension is common, but God calls us to guard our hearts and to seek His wisdom above our feelings. Proverbs 4:23 says, Keep your heart with all diligence, for out of it is the wellspring of life. And Proverbs 3:5-6 says, Trust in Yahweh with all your heart, and don’t lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make your paths straight.

We want to gently encourage you to consider what biblical courtship should look like. We believe marriage is a lifelong covenant between a man and a woman ordained by God, and therefore dating should not be casual or exploratory for companionship alone, but intentional courtship with the goal of finding a godly spouse who is a fellow believer in Christ. We are to seek a wife, not merely a girlfriend or partner, and we must not be unequally yoked. 2 Corinthians 6:14 says, Don’t be unequally yoked with unbelievers, for what fellowship do righteousness and iniquity have? Meeting many women one on one can quickly become a distraction to your calling and can stir emotions and even temptations that pull your focus from Christ. If you are pursuing multiple dates at once, we encourage you to pause and ask whether this honors God and protects both your purity and the purity of these women. Any sexual intimacy before or outside of marriage is fornication and is sin before God, and even emotional entanglements can lead us away from wisdom. We encourage you to pursue purity, clarity, and singleness of purpose, seeking one godly woman at a time in a way that is above reproach.

Your prayer to not be misled or distracted by any woman who is not of God is exactly right. Matthew 6:33 says, But seek first God’s Kingdom and his righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well. And James 1:5 says, But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. God has a good plan for your life. Jeremiah 29:11 says, For I know the thoughts that I think toward you, says Yahweh, thoughts of peace, and not of evil, to give you hope and a future. And Psalm 37:4 says, Also delight yourself in Yahweh, and he will give you the desires of your heart. As you delight in Him, He will align your desires with His.

We are thankful you prayed through Jesus, for it is only through His name that we have access to the Father. John 14:6 says, Jesus said to him, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. And Acts 4:12 says, There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved.

We pray together for you now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up our brother to You. We thank You for his open heart and his desire to follow Your will and not his own. Give him clear wisdom and discernment to know which relationships are from You and which are distractions. Quiet the noise of a crush and of many options, and help him to keep his heart with diligence. Lead him away from any woman who would pull him from Your calling and toward a godly spouse, a believing wife who will love You and walk beside him in faith and purity for a lifetime of marriage if it is Your will. Help him to seek first Your Kingdom and to trust You to make his paths straight. Guard him from fornication and from emotional double-mindedness, and help him to pursue courtship in holiness, honor, and self-control. May he find You first above all else, and in finding You, find Your perfect plan. We ask this in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and Savior. Amen.

Thank you for letting us pray with you about this. We hear how much you want to follow God's plan and not get pulled off course, even while your heart is pulled in different directions.

It makes sense that your crush would stay on your mind while you're meeting new people. Wanting an open heart while also wanting focus is a real tension, and bringing that tension directly to Jesus as you are doing is the right place to start.

One simple practice that helps many men in this season is to get clear on paper before the next one on one meetings. Write down in a few sentences what you sense God has called you to in this season, and what alignment would actually look like in conversation, character and faith. After each meeting, take a quiet moment to pray and notice whether time with that person left you more settled in Christ and clearer about that calling, or more distracted and unsettled. Sharing those notes with a trusted pastor or mature friend can bring outside clarity when feelings are strong.

We are praying for you to stay close to Jesus above all.

Father, we lift our brother to You. Give him a clear mind and a steady heart as he seeks You first. Guard him from distraction and lead him step by step in Your will. Help him to know Your voice and to walk in faithfulness. In Jesus' name, amen.

I am glad you are meeting new girls to chat with! That's great!

Make sure to pick the right one that you know is good for you, because when you marry, I think it's a sin to divorce. I am a relatively new christian so maybe that might be wrong, but I don't know. Pick the right one for you!

I am praying for you to meet the right woman, in the name of Jesus, amen.

Your desire to be led by the Lord rather than by your own heart is itself a mark of grace, and it is right that you bring it before Him in prayer. You ask that you may find Christ and not be misled or distracted, and that is the prayer which God delights to answer.

Remember that as surely as God's will is the axle of the universe, so all things are under His regulation and have an appointed place in His plan. Nothing happens but what He permits or ordains. It is foolish for a man to say, we will go, we will buy, we will sell, we will get gain, or in this case, we will choose this woman or that one, as if we could both propose and dispose without asking God's consent at all. The Scripture teaches us to feel in our hearts, if the Lord wills, we shall do this or that. So bring each acquaintance, each conversation, each affection, under that holy condition. Will this draw me nearer to Christ and to His calling upon my life, or will it draw me away?

You speak of many new opportunities and of a crush that often crosses your mind. Here there is need of that godly fear which makes a man bold to do what is right. If you fear God much, you will have confidence to obey Him even when affection pulls strongly. You will be able to say, I will not be where I could not introduce my Master, I will not go where He could not go with me, I will not pursue a nearness with any woman which does not belong within the lifelong covenant of one man and one woman in marriage. Bind this resolve upon your heart and tie it about your neck, for God's Word must be a continual lamp unto your feet and a constant light unto your path, or the greatest heed will not keep you out of the mire.

Will you call upon God in all seasons of prayer? The trial of sincerity is perseverance. Will you call upon Him when the heart is warm with hope, and when it is heavy with disappointment, in the secret place where the Father hears in secret, and in years to come as you do now? Never cease to pray, God glorify Thy dear Son in my life, and keep on praying. The work of the Spirit, which is the effect of the will of God, is to change the human will and to make men willing in the day of His power, working in them to will and to do of His good pleasure. Ask Him to shape your will to His own.

Therefore seek first to find Christ Himself, and to be found in Him. Let your best profit be to do God's will. If you walk in His ways He will never require of you anything inequitable or unrighteous, and no good thing will He withhold from them that walk uprightly. If a relationship is of Him, it will promote holiness, truth, and the service of Christ. If it distracts from Him, no matter how pleasant the feeling, it is not of Him.

We pray with you that the Lord Jesus will keep your heart and mind open to His voice alone, that He will give you wisdom to deal with each person with honor and purity, not leading on nor being led astray, that He will settle your thoughts upon your calling, and that He will make His own will plain in His time. May He preserve you, keep you, and at last present you faithful, having sought not merely a companion for life, but Christ Himself as your chief portion.

May God in Jesus' name answer your prayer request according to God's perfect love, wisdom, will, timing, grace, and mercy. God is so in love with you. Be Encouraged!
