Obsession with worldly things = idolatry

I can't turn on a TV station without hearing obsessive coverage of the World Cup. Even on the news, the first 20 minutes are dedicated to the World Cup, as if everyone is as obsessed as they are. Question: if an obsession overrides someone's mind to that extent, where their whole attention goes to it round the clock, isn't that a form of idolatry? Isn't idolatry putting anything ahead of God? Does idolatry have to mean praying to a statue? Something that occupies your thoughts more than God, does that count as idolatry? It certainly takes your mind off God.

You’ve touched on a profound and often overlooked truth in the Christian walk. The obsession with worldly things, whether it’s sports, entertainment, wealth, or even relationships, can indeed become a form of idolatry when it consumes our thoughts, time, and devotion more than God. Scripture is clear that idolatry is not just bowing to a golden calf; it is anything that takes the place of God in our hearts and minds.

Jesus warned us in Matthew 6:24, "No one can serve two masters, for either he will hate the one and love the other; or else he will be devoted to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and Mammon." Mammon here represents not just money, but anything we prioritize above God, whether it’s fame, pleasure, or even something as seemingly innocent as a sporting event. When our attention is fixated on these things to the point that God is pushed aside, we have made them into idols.

The apostle Paul also addressed this in Colossians 3:5, where he lists covetousness as idolatry: "Put to death therefore your members which are on the earth: sexual immorality, uncleanness, depraved passion, evil desire, and covetousness, which is idolatry." Covetousness isn’t just about desiring what others have; it’s an insatiable hunger for anything that distracts us from God’s will. When the World Cup, or any worldly pursuit, dominates our conversations, schedules, and thoughts, it has become an idol, robbing us of the time and focus we should be giving to the Lord.

We must also remember what Jesus said in Luke 10:27: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, with all your soul, with all your strength, and with all your mind." When our minds are constantly occupied with worldly things, we are failing to love God with our whole being. This doesn’t mean we can’t enjoy the blessings God gives us, sports, hobbies, or even good news, but when they become our primary focus, they displace God from His rightful place in our lives.

Let us pray together for those who are struggling with this form of idolatry, that their hearts would be turned back to the Lord:

"Heavenly Father, we come before You with humble hearts, recognizing that anything that takes Your place in our lives is an idol. Lord, we confess that it is easy to become consumed by the things of this world, whether it’s entertainment, sports, or the pursuit of success. Forgive us for allowing these things to distract us from You. Help us to examine our hearts and minds, Lord, and to cast down every idol that exalts itself against the knowledge of You. Renew our minds, Father, so that we may set our thoughts on things above, not on the things of this earth. Give us the strength to turn away from anything that draws us away from You, and fill us with a hunger and thirst for Your Word, Your presence, and Your will. May our lives reflect Your glory alone, and may we love You with all our heart, soul, strength, and mind. In the precious name of Jesus, we pray, Amen."

To those who feel overwhelmed by the world’s distractions, we encourage you to take practical steps to guard your heart. Set boundaries with your time, limit exposure to things that pull you away from God. Replace that time with prayer, reading Scripture, and fellowship with other believers. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal any idols in your life and give you the strength to remove them. Remember, God is a jealous God (Exodus 20:5), not because He is petty, but because He knows that anything less than Him will leave us empty and unfulfilled.

Finally, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of our faith (Hebrews 12:2). Only in Him will we find true satisfaction and purpose. The world and its passions will fade away, but the one who does the will of God lives forever (1 John 2:17). Let us choose today whom we will serve (Joshua 24:15).

We hear you on this, you’re putting your finger on something real. When any single thing, even something neutral like a sporting event, starts soaking up the bulk of our attention and emotional energy, it can quietly nudge God out of that central place. You’re right that idolatry isn’t only about bowing to a statue; it’s whenever our hearts chase after something more than we chase after the Lord. And in a season like this, with nonstop coverage and everyone talking about it, the pull is strong, even for those of us who want to keep our minds set on things above.

At the same time, we want to be careful not to pile guilt onto ourselves. The world will always be loud, and our minds will wander, that’s part of living in a distracted age. What matters is what we do when we notice that drift. One simple, concrete thing we can do is turn those moments into a prompt: every time a World Cup headline or conversation stirs our curiosity, we can pause and whisper a short prayer, maybe for the people of the nations playing, or just, “Lord, I love you more than this.” It’s a way to take the very thing that competes for our attention and hand it back to God.

If the nonstop coverage is wearing on you, it might also be wise to step away for a bit, skip the news segments, mute the chatter, and give your soul some quiet. That’s not weakness; it’s guarding your heart. God isn’t threatened by a soccer match, but He does invite us to keep our loves in order.

Jesus, we come to you as easily distracted people. Thank you for giving us this honest question. Help us to love you with a whole heart, and to notice when anything starts to crowd you out. Teach us to hold the things of this world loosely, and to turn our minds back to you again and again. In your name we pray, amen.
