Not just for petitions granted

Your longing to know Christ more deeply and to be filled with the Holy Spirit until your cup runs over is a beautiful and biblical prayer, and I thank God for it. It is good that you do not seek God only for what He can give in answer to petitions, but for Himself, for His presence and His fullness dwelling in you.

Scripture itself holds out this promise. The apostle prays that we may know the love of Christ which passes knowledge and be filled unto all the fullness of God, which is to be filled with every virtue of which God is full and to know how He is worshiped as Father, Son and Holy Spirit. This fullness comes not by our own strength, but by the Spirit. As fire, the Spirit comes to kindle the heart and make it fervent, to put sin to death and to make the struggle against sin light, giving abundant help and crowning us even at the start through grace.

That gift was promised to be poured out abundantly after our Lord had taken away the curse and reconciled us to God through His cross. Before that, the Spirit was withheld, but now after the reconciliation He is given without stint to those who belong to Christ, not only to possess Him ourselves but to be made alive by Him. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus sets us free from the law of sin and death, and it is the Spirit who gives life and leads us as adopted children of God.

So continue to wait on Jesus in this way. Remain in the Word, in prayer, and in obedience, asking the Father in the name of the Son to fill you more and more. Confess sin quickly, walk in step with the Spirit, and stay in fellowship with other believers where the gifts of the Spirit are exercised for the common good.

I pray for you now that our gracious Father would deepen your communion with Jesus Christ, that He would fill you afresh with His Holy Spirit in large measure, that your cup would indeed run over with His love, joy, peace and power, and that out of that fullness you would bear much fruit for His glory. May He keep you rooted and grounded in love, growing in maturity and in the knowledge of Him until you are strengthened to know more of His love and to live fully for Him.

Your desire to be filled until your cup overflows is beautiful and it is the kind of hunger God delights to meet. It is right that you are not only looking for answers to prayer but for more of His presence itself, to grow closer and to know Him more deeply.

Before you trusted Christ the Holy Spirit was working alongside you, convicting you of sin and showing you that Jesus is the answer, drawing you to surrender your life to Him. The moment you received Jesus the Spirit came to live within you. Scripture teaches that your body is now the temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, that you are not your own because you have been bought with a price, and that you are to glorify God with your body and spirit which are His.

There is also the work Jesus promised when He said John baptized with water but you would be baptized with the Holy Spirit. Jesus is the one who baptizes and the Spirit is the element in which we are immersed, so that we are covered and overflowing. Jesus gave that invitation when He said if anyone thirsts let him come to Me and drink, and out of his heart will flow rivers of living water, speaking of the Spirit who would be given.

Jesus Himself shows the pattern for us. He was full of the Holy Spirit, He was led by the Spirit, and He returned in the power of the Spirit. If He lived that way as our example, how much more should we seek to be filled and to be led and to be empowered in the same way. Scripture urges us not to be controlled by wine but to be continually filled with the Spirit.

When the Spirit has the first place in your life, with spirit and soul and body in proper order, you have fellowship with God in the realm of the spirit. His Spirit bears witness with your spirit that you are a child of God, not only to your mind or feelings but deep within where you are joined to Him.

Keep coming with that thirst. Ask the Lord to fill you afresh, to lead you day by day, and to give you power to live for Him and to be His witness. May He pour out His love and peace upon you until your cup truly runs over, and may you continue to grow into maturity and fullness in Christ as you walk in close communion with Him.

We are deeply grateful for the privilege of standing in prayer with you these past days, lifting up your heart’s desire not only for answered petitions but, even more, for a deeper intimacy with our Lord. It is a sacred joy to intercede alongside you as you seek to be filled to overflowing with the Holy Spirit, allowing Him to shape every thought, word, and deed until your cup runs over with His presence.

We continue to pray that your hunger for God’s nearness grows stronger each day, that your walk with Christ deepens, and that the Holy Spirit’s power and peace saturate your life in ways that overflow into the lives of those around you. May the Father draw you closer, reveal more of His heart to you, and pour out fresh grace and wisdom as you press into Him.

If you’ve already sensed His nearness, His filling, or a new measure of His Spirit at work in you, we would love to hear your praise report—let us rejoice together in what He has done! If your longing for more of Him still feels unmet, we invite you to share your request again so we may persist in prayer with you, trusting that He is faithful to complete the good work He has begun in you.

May the Lord bless you abundantly as you seek Him with all your heart, and may His presence go before you, beside you, and within you today and always. We pray this in the powerful and precious name of Jesus. Amen.
