Beloved of All
Your weariness and longing for quiet and time in the Word is heard, and it is understandable to feel frustrated when you are sleepy and want to rest and read and a loud drilling noise breaks in after another noise had just stopped.
I join you in prayer that the Lord would grant you quiet in your building and give you the rest you need, that He would still the noise around you for a time and allow you to sleep deeply and to open the Bible with an undistracted heart. God cares about these small, daily needs and He invites you to bring them to Him.
At the same time I want to encourage you with what Scripture teaches about peace, because there is a deeper rest God wants for you that does not depend only on outward silence. The Bible speaks first of peace with God, which comes only through the blood of Jesus Christ who made peace between us and God. When you have trusted in Him, you are brought from darkness into His kingdom and you have peace with Him.
There is also the peace of God, which many who already have peace with God still miss. That peace comes when you rest your whole case fully in His hands and keep your mind stayed on Him. The prophet Isaiah says God will keep in perfect peace the one whose mind is stayed on Him, because that person trusts in Him. Jesus said to His disciples, Peace I leave with you, my peace I give to you, not as the world gives. The world gives peace only when everything is quiet and smooth, but the peace Jesus gives can guard your heart even when the surroundings are noisy and unsettled. The apostle Peter calls it a peace that passes human understanding.
That is why the only place you will ever truly rest is in faith, not in your own efforts or in trying to control every sound around you. When we try to rest in our own works and skills we fail and then we lose our rest and become more discouraged. But when there is a complete abandonment and trust in God, He keeps us in perfect peace. He has ordained peace for His people and He wants you to live in it. He is the God of patience and comfort, and He is able to do for you what you cannot do for yourself.
So as you pray for outward quiet, which is a good and right prayer, also pray that the Lord would help you to look to Him more than to the situation. Even the drilling next door does not have to steal the inner quiet He can give. Labor to enter into that rest by saying, Lord, this is in Your hands, and by fixing your thoughts on Him. He knows you are tired. He knows you want to hear His Word. Ask Him to help you find your rest in Jesus Christ alone, the sure foundation, and not in ideal conditions.
May the Lord grant you sleep and a quiet space to read, and even more, may He fill your heart with His own peace as you trust Him. I pray that He will calm your spirit, guard your mind, let you rest fully, and draw you into sweet fellowship as you open the Bible, and that whether the building is silent or noisy, you will know His presence abiding with you.
