Thank you for sharing this burden for your niece. It is a heavy thing to grieve a deep loss while at the same time having to step into adult responsibilities that were left behind, and God sees both parts of what she is carrying.

Grief like this is great, and sometimes the most loving thing those around her can do is simply be present. When friends came to comfort Job they first wept with him and sat in silence because they saw how great his sorrow was. She does not need perfect words from you as much as she needs to know she is not alone, that you are there, praying and willing to sit with her in the sorrow.

In grief our minds often torment us by trying to rewrite the past, thinking if only I had done this or said that things might be different. That path only deepens the pain. And it helps to remember that the words spoken out of raw grief, even in Scripture, are not always true reflections of God. What is true is that Jesus himself is described as a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. He wept, He was grieved in spirit, and He bore our griefs and carried our sorrows when He made His soul an offering for sin because He loves us. He understands the shock and ache she feels and He carries what feels too heavy for her to carry alone.

When sorrow becomes overwhelming we can lose perspective and forget how great and powerful God is. The psalmist described grief that consumed his eyes and made his whole life feel spent in sorrow, as if there had never been a good day. That is how grief distorts time. Yet the same psalmist also speaks of God removing the sackcloth, the clothing of mourning, and girding us with gladness. God does not always lift the sorrow instantly, but He is able to bring comfort and even joy again as we keep looking to Him. Jesus showed that same compassion to a father who had just been told his daughter had died, speaking to him in that hopeless moment, do not be afraid, only believe. That is still His word to a grieving heart.

Pain and grief are not wasted in God's hands. They are often the tools He uses to shape character and to form in us the image He desires, even when we cannot see the purpose while we are in the middle of it. Joseph knew long years of grief, betrayed by his brothers, sold as a slave, falsely accused and imprisoned, hated and shot at as if by archers. In those years he could not understand why, and like us he must have asked why again and again. God did not always explain at the time, but He was working through it all and later Joseph could see His hand. Your niece may not understand now why this loss came or why so much responsibility has fallen on her so quickly. Encourage her to wait on the Lord and to trust that He sees the whole course of her life when she can see only the present hurt.

She is being asked to live as an adult in very practical ways, handling matters that feel beyond her years. In Christ, God does not leave us as orphans to manage alone. Through Jesus we are brought from being under tutors into the place of sons and daughters who belong in the family, heirs who have the Spirit crying Abba, Father in our hearts. That means she has a Father who is present, who will give wisdom for each decision and strength for each task as she asks Him.

Continue to pray for her and with her, and where you can, help her with the practical things that overwhelm her. Point her gently to a place of prayer, even if it is just a quiet corner where she can pour out her heart to God honestly. Remind her of His greatness and His nearness rather than letting the problems grow larger than Him in her eyes.

Praying for your niece in Jesus name, that the Lord will comfort her heart, lift the weight of grief in His time, give her wisdom and peace for every adult responsibility before her, and let her know deeply that she is carried by the One who has borne our sorrows and who will clothe mourning with gladness. May she hear His voice saying do not be afraid, only believe, and may she know the Father's care each day. Amen.
