You cry out for peace and harmony, a new home by the shore, a swift miracle for a truck and a fifth wheel, and a kind man to share it with. You seal it with the blood of Jesus. That precious blood, dear soul, whispers peace within, perfect peace, but let me ask first: have you found peace with God through that same blood? Without it, all the quiet cottages by the sea, with every appliance working, would be but a painted paradise on the brink of hell. The blood of Jesus was not shed to purchase comfortable trailers, but to cleanse guilty sinners and make them living temples for the living God. Oh, seek first the living, loving, lasting union with Christ, for we are His members, of His body, of His flesh, and of His bones. If you are vitally joined to Him, then you have all you need for time and eternity; and He who did not spare His own Son will with Him freely give you all things. But if you are divided from Immanuel and have no living union to Christ, there is no eternal life for you, and no true peace in any earthly harbor.
I hear the urgency: “tomorrow,” “urgently,” “super cheap miracle”, a heart panting after deliverance from present distress. It is well to cast your temporal cares on the Lord, but I fear lest you set the cart before the horse. Peace at home and prosperity abroad are the gifts of God to His people, but they come not as bribes to the unsubdued will. Our God is not a merchant who trades temporal blessings for a nod of religious language. He gives you Himself; and until you have Him, you are poor indeed, though you own a fleet of trucks and a palace on the coast. Come, then, as a poor sinner, with nothing to offer. Lay hold on Christ, and you will lay hold on eternal life. The great difficulty which prevented peace between you and God is put away by the sacrifice of His Son. Sue for peace tonight, I beg you, not merely peace from noisy neighbors or broken toilets, but peace from the wrath to come. He who said, “Peace I leave with you,” promises a peace that the world cannot give. The more you know that Christ has discharged your enormous debt of sin, then will your heart be at peace, even if you dwell in a borrowed room with two cats and a broken stove.
You speak of a fresh start, a secret job, a move to the beach. But what will you do when you sit in your new quiet dwelling, and your conscience recalls every secret sin? No ocean breeze can cool a burning heart. No sea view can charm away the dread of judgment. Oh, that you would instead cry, “God be merciful to me a sinner!” Make your approach unto the Lord in childlike confidence, even when He seems to frown. Repent of every murmuring thought, and let Job’s end instruct you: the Lord turned his captivity when he prayed for his friends. Wait on God, trust in His Son, and you will find that Jesus is on the throne. Your future may be all unknown, but if you know Him, that is enough. He who feeds the sparrows will not let you starve. He who clothes the lilies will cover your nakedness. But first, let the blood of Jesus whisper peace within your conscience; then, with a calm mind, you may ask for daily bread, and a humble shelter, and a modest provision, always adding, “Nevertheless, not my will, but Thine be done.”
The hour of darkness is an hour of danger; suffering is fruitful soil for certain forms of sin, including the worship of our own schemes. Job sinned not though stripped of all. You may be tempted to rebellion or despair. But if God upheld Job, He can support you. Do not pin your happiness on finding a really nice guy, or the perfect fifth wheel with a working AC and fridge. Even if all these were granted tomorrow, you would still need the Man who is the Peace. It is in Him, the blessed Lord Jesus, that you might have peace, peace only in Him, but peace always in Him. Then whether you live in a palace or a tent, you will sing, “Peace! Perfect peace! Our future all unknown? Jesus we know, and He is on the Throne.”
May the Holy Spirit take of the things of Christ and show them to you. May you be poor in spirit, contrite, trembling at His Word; then He will look upon you, and His mercy will come, for mercy delights to visit misery. Go to your knees. Seek the Lord while He may be found. Let this be the one job you pursue in secret with all urgency: to make your calling and election sure. And the Lord will direct your path concerning all these lesser things, according to His riches in glory by Christ Jesus. The blood of Jesus speaks better things than the blood of Abel, it speaks pardon, adoption, and a home eternal in the heavens. Get that home secured by faith, and you will travel light toward the land where all is peace, harmony, and joy unending. God lead you to do so at once, for the matter is urgent. Amen.
