We hear your cry about this distressing situation with idle neighbors who have made gossip and meddling into a war around you, bringing disorder, disgrace, financial burden, and even hospitalization and grief, and we join together with you to seek the Lord's help and to rebuke what is evil in His sight.

The Word of God is very clear about the destructive nature of gossip, idleness, and meddling. A perverse man stirs up strife, and a whisperer separates close friends Proverbs 16:28. He who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets, therefore do not keep company with him who opens wide his lips Proverbs 20:19. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people Leviticus 19:16. Where there is no wood, the fire goes out, where there is no whisperer, quarreling ceases Proverbs 26:20. The tongue is a fire, a world of unrighteousness James 3:6, and we are warned to let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up Ephesians 4:29. You rightly quoted Galatians 5:20-21 where sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, factions, envy and such are called works of the flesh, and those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. And Titus 3:3 reminds us that at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another, but God in His mercy saved us.

We also hear your burden about unemployment and an idle environment that has become a place for spying on another's house, distributing disrespectful pictures, causing bullying, destroying reputations, and creating discord. Scripture rebukes such idleness and being busybodies. We hear that some are busybodies, not working at all, but are busybodies 2 Thessalonians 3:11. We exhort you to aspire to lead a quiet life, to do your own business, and to work with your own hands 1 Thessalonians 4:11. Let none of you suffer as a murderer, a thief, an evildoer, or a meddler in other men's matters 1 Peter 4:15. If anyone is not willing to work, neither let him eat 2 Thessalonians 3:10. Idleness gives place to the enemy and opens the door to demonic influence, mockery, voyeurism, divination and sorcery which God hates, and we rebuke that spirit of laziness, gossip, voyeurism, sorcery, false accusation, and disorder in the name of Jesus Christ.

We also gently correct and encourage you, we notice your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ. We want to lovingly remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life, no one comes to the Father except through me John 14:6. There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved Acts 4:12. Without calling upon the name of Jesus, our prayers have no foundation, for God hears us because Christ shed His blood for our sins, died and rose again, and we must believe on Him and confess Him as Lord to be reconciled to God. If you have not already, we urge you to put your trust fully in Jesus Christ for forgiveness and for peace in this war you are facing.

We understand your feeling of being overwhelmed, saying we are not God, we are not obligated to defend or protect this demanding and ruinous behavior, and you are right that vengeance and ultimate justice belong to the Lord. We are called to live at peace with all men as much as it depends on us Romans 12:18, to not repay evil for evil, but to overcome evil with good Romans 12:21, and to trust God to be our defender and refuge Psalm 46:1. You do not have to carry this anxiety alone, but cast all your anxiety on him, because he cares for you 1 Peter 5:7.

Father in heaven, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus Christ, and we ask for Your mercy and intervention over this home and neighborhood. Lord, we rebuke the spirit of gossip, slander, idleness, voyeurism, sorcery, envy, strife and division that has been sowing war, confusion, false information, inflated costs, missing deliveries and disorder. We ask You to silence the whispering tongue and to bring conviction to those who delight in destroying reputations and creating discord, that they may repent and turn from works of the flesh to seek honest work and godly living. Lord, set a guard over our lips and over this dwelling, let no weapon formed against us prosper Isaiah 54:17, and let every tongue that rises in judgment be shown to be in the wrong. We ask for Your healing over the hospitalization, grief, loss and financial suffering that this war of gossip has caused, touch the bodies that are ill, comfort those who mourn, and restore what has been ruined and disgraced. Provide for every extra bill and financial burden according to Your riches in glory Philippians 4:19, and grant wisdom to handle false employment, corruption and meddling with integrity. Give us peace that surpasses all understanding Philippians 4:7, and help us to not be drawn into retaliation but to walk in love, truth and diligence, working quietly with our own hands and trusting You as our defender. We pray also for these neighbors, that You would save them, deliver them from idleness and demonic deception, and bring them to the knowledge of Jesus Christ. We ask all this in the name of Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior, amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer, to avoid returning gossip for gossip, to set wise and loving boundaries, to document wrongdoing when needed for protection, to seek godly counsel and, if necessary, lawful help for harassment or voyeurism, and to continue in honest work and prayer for those who persecute you. Love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you Matthew 5:44, not because their behavior is acceptable, but because Christ loved us while we were still sinners Romans 5:8 and calls us to reflect His mercy. Keep your heart guarded, keep your speech wholesome, and trust that God sees all and will bring justice in His perfect time.

We hear how exhausting this has been for you, living with constant watching, gossip, and disorder right outside your home, and carrying the weight of hospitalization, grief, and financial strain at the same time. It makes sense you would feel worn down and on edge when there is so much noise and disrespect around you.

You named something important when you said you are not God and not responsible to fix or defend against everything happening in the neighborhood. That is a healthy and true distinction. We can care about peace where we live without carrying what is not ours to carry.

One small step that sometimes helps in a situation like this is to think in terms of boundaries, like a property line for your heart and home. It can help to decide ahead of time what is yours to tend to and what you will step back from. That might look like limiting how much you listen to or pass along the gossip, not engaging when pictures or rumors are meant to provoke, and keeping your focus on the life inside your own home. If the conflict feels unsafe or escalating, it can also help to talk with a trusted pastor or a calm, neutral third person in your community who can help you think through next steps.

Father, we lift up our friend to You in the midst of this long season of stress and grief. Bring quiet to their home, guard their heart from fear and confusion, and give clear wisdom for each day. The heavy trial you describe has been heard, and it is brought before the Lord with earnestness. To be surrounded by idle gossip, by prying eyes and mocking tongues, by disorder and confusion that enters even into the home, and at the same time to bear the weight of sickness and hospitalization and the fear of ruin, is indeed a sore affliction. The Scripture you have quoted names these things truly as works of the flesh, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, dissensions and factions, and those who live in them shall not inherit the kingdom of God. And it is also true as Titus declares that we ourselves were once foolish and enslaved by passions, living in malice and envy, hated and hating one another, until the grace of God appeared.

Do not be so affected by external things as to get into a state of worry, fretfulness, care, anxiety and distress. Our Saviour would have you not be anxious about your temporal affairs. Be prudent and sober, and cast your care upon Him who cares for you. I have never discovered that anxiety has comforted anybody, or that it has brought any grist to the mill, or any meal to the barrel. If a thing does not pay, what is the good of it. The very anxiety which arises through your being in a difficulty unfits you to meet that difficulty. Your disorder and distraction, your missing provisions and provoking wars of words, are not to be borne by fretting alone, but by prayer.

When slander is the rod under which you smart, remember many have felt it before you, and you need not complain as if a strange thing had happened to you. Let the Lord appoint you care or calumny, sickness or slander, for He knows best. Let everyone look to himself and let no man despise his neighbor, and give up all idea of speaking proudly in the presence of God. You are not God, and you are not required to defend or protect what only God can govern. Vengeance and judgment belong to Him, and He will weigh all things in His own scales.

Yet you need no exhortation to love yourself, for your own comfort will be a primary theme of your anxiety. The call of Christ is to love your neighbour while still hating the sin that destroys him. Pray therefore not only for your own deliverance but for those who misuse their idle time to spy and to distribute disrespectful things and to create discord. Pray that the Lord would rebuke the spirit of gossip, of slothfulness and laziness, of sorcery and deceit, and bring those who practice such things to repentance and to the knowledge of Jesus Christ, through whom alone is salvation.

And in the midst of this worry and harassment, now for a brief prayer. As Nehemiah prayed silently before the king, so lift your heart in brief, silent prayer throughout the day. When the mockery comes, when the confusion over lists and ranks and numbers presses, when the grief of the hospital and the burden of bills lie heavy, send up a short cry to heaven. You will manage all the better and your own mind will be the less ruffled. Another may be content with outward forms, but the anxious enquirer will say, I want to find Christ in it. Seek Christ Himself, not merely relief from annoyance.

We pray with you now, that the Lord would rebuke every work of darkness that has set itself against your household, that He would silence the tongue of the boisterous gossip and the voyeur, that He would bring to nothing the divination and sorcery and meddling, that He would heal the wounds of hospitalization and grief and stay the hand of ruin and disgrace, that He would provide honest employment and order where there has been idleness and disorder, and that He would keep your heart from consuming anxiety and fix it upon His providence. May He grant you quietness, integrity of reputation, and peace within your walls, and may He turn the hearts of those around you from malice to the love of truth, for His own glory. Amen.
