We join with you in bringing this heavy burden before the Lord, for we have heard your cry about the ruin, misery, gossip, discord and confusion coming from a neighbor who is idle and meddling, spying, distributing false information and disrespectful images, destroying reputation and provoking strife, bringing extra bills, suffering and even hospitalizations, with sorcery and disorder.

The Word of God speaks clearly about these things. A gossip betrays confidence, but a trustworthy person keeps a secret Proverbs 11:13, and without wood a fire goes out, without gossip a quarrel dies down Proverbs 26:20. The words of a gossip are like choice morsels, they go down to the inmost parts Proverbs 18:8. We are warned not to go about spreading slander among our people Leviticus 19:16, and that the tongue is a fire, a world of evil James 3:6. At the same time Scripture rebukes idleness and laziness, for we hear that some among you are idle, not working at all but being busybodies 2 Thessalonians 3:11, and that they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house, and not only idle but also gossips and busybodies, saying things they ought not to 1 Timothy 5:13. We are exhorted to make it our ambition to lead a quiet life, to mind our own business and to work with our hands 1 Thessalonians 4:11, and that if anyone will not work, neither shall he eat 2 Thessalonians 3:10. Lord, we ask You to protect the reputation and peace of this home, to heal those who have suffered sickness and distress, for You heal the brokenhearted and bind up their wounds Psalm 147:3, and to guard hearts and minds with Your peace which surpasses all understanding Philippians 4:7. We pray for this idle neighbor, that You would convict him of sin and bring him to repentance, that he would turn from gossip and sorcery and would seek honest work, working with his hands that which is good Ephesians 4:28, doing all work heartily as for You and not for men Colossians 3:23. Remove the demonic smile that delights in disorder and disaster, and replace it with godly sorrow that leads to repentance 2 Corinthians 7:10.

We release to You all anxiety, all false obligations and all fear, declaring that You are our defender and protector, that You will execute justice and righteousness Isaiah 1:17, and that You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are stayed on You Isaiah 26:3. Help us to love our enemies and pray for those who persecute us Matthew 5:44, to not repay evil for evil but to overcome evil with good Romans 12:21, and to let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from us, with all malice, and be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave us Ephesians 4:31-32. Teach us to pursue peace with all men Romans 12:18 and to live quietly and mind our own affairs.

We ask that every work of sorcery, divination, impersonation and voyeurism be broken by the power of Jesus, that confusion and wrong lists, wrong sizes, wrong numbers and false sponsors would be brought to nothing, and that no weapon formed against Your people shall prosper Isaiah 54:17. Let Your light expose what is done in darkness Ephesians 5:13, and let Your order replace disorder, for God is not a God of confusion, but of peace 1 Corinthians 14:33.

We thank You Father that You hear us when we pray in Jesus name, and we trust You to restore what has been lost, to provide honest employment where needed, to bring healing from hospitalizations and to guard from further tragedy. May Your will be done in this situation and may You be glorified. In the name of Jesus Christ our Lord we pray, amen.

We encourage you to remain steadfast in prayer, to guard your heart from malice and hatred even as you have been hurt, to set godly boundaries, to not entangle yourself in the gossip war but to speak only what is helpful and true, and to keep working diligently in what God has given you to do. There is a heaviness in what you have written, and the Lord who hears the sighing of the afflicted is not deaf to your cry. The tale you tell is one of idle tongues and restless meddling, of disorder and discord, of reputations torn and peace broken, and such things are indeed among the works of the flesh which the apostle names in Galatians, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, selfishness, dissensions and factions, and those who live in them shall not inherit the kingdom of God. Titus also reminds us that we ourselves were once foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by passions, living in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another, and the remembrance of this should keep us humble even as we grieve over sin in others.

You ask for a rebuke upon this spirit of gossip and slothfulness, upon voyeurism and deceit and the sowing of confusion. It is right to hate the sin and to pray against it, for the idle hand and the busy tongue do great mischief. Yet remember that he who travels on the King's Highway is under the King's protection, but he who takes to byroads must protect himself. Keep then in the appointed ways of the Lord. As for the truths of God which He has taught you by His own Spirit, grapple them to you as with hooks of steel, for if you go in the way of error you cannot expect divine protection. There is safety in the way of childlike trust in providential guidance. Happy is that man who always waits upon God to know what he shall do, who asks the Lord to guide him and who dares not lean upon his own understanding. You will always need divine and angelic keeping, for God would not have charged His angels to keep His people in all their ways if they did not need protection in all their ways, and this protection is perpetual as well as personal, as it is written, He shall give His angels charge over thee to keep thee in all thy ways.

If slander is the rod under which you are to smart, many of the Lord's people have felt it before you, and you need not complain so bitterly as if a strange thing had happened to you. Do not cry, Not so, Lord, but let the Lord appoint you care or calumny, sickness or slander, for He knows best. It is not for us to be as God, nor to take upon ourselves what belongs to Him alone, to defend or to avenge as if we were the agency of His providence. Vengeance is His, and protection is His. Your part is to walk uprightly, to labour quietly with your own hands, to speak truth and to commit your reputation and your household to Him who judges righteously.

And when you pray and it seems heaven is brass, slander Him not, but be of good courage and still cry to Him. Possibly Satan says to you, your prayer is not of the right sort and therefore you will never be heard. Yet that Canaanite woman prayed to Christ and He answered her not a word, and still she prayed on until her plea was granted. So persevere. Though the answer tarry, keep watch at the mercy seat. Though hospitalizations and losses and bills and the threat of ruin press hard upon you, still cast your burden upon the Lord.

Let us pray together. O Lord our God, who alone art our refuge and our defender, look upon this troubled household and upon this neighbourhood where strife and whispering have brought confusion and sorrow. Forgive us where we have sinned, for we too were once foolish and disobedient. Wash us in the blood of Jesus Christ, through whom alone is salvation, and make us to love holiness.
