We join together with you in Jesus name to bring this heavy burden before the Lord, for we have heard your cry about the distress caused by a neighbor given to idleness, meddling, gossip, and disorder, and the suffering, confusion, and even hospitalization and financial hardship that has followed.

We rebuke together the spirit of gossip, slander, and meddling that you have described. The Word tells us that a perverse man stirs up strife, and a whisperer separates close friends, Proverbs 16:28, and that he who goes about as a tale-bearer reveals secrets, therefore do not keep company with him who opens wide his lips, Proverbs 20:19. Where no wood is, the fire goes out, so where there is no whisperer, contention ceases, Proverbs 26:20. We rebuke the idle and destructive use of time that leads to spying on another house, taking disrespectful pictures, distributing false information, and destroying reputation for bullying and discord. Scripture warns us that we hear of some who walk among you in rebellion, who do not work at all, but are busybodies, 2 Thessalonians 3:11, and that at the same time they also learn to be idle, going about from house to house, and not only idle, but also gossips and busybodies, saying things which they ought not, 1 Timothy 5:13. You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, Leviticus 19:16. We also rebuke the involvement with sorcery, divination, and deception that you mention, for these are works of the flesh. As you rightly quoted, idolatry, sorcery, hatred, strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, rivalries, divisions, heresies, envy, murders, drunkenness, orgies, and things like these, as you noted in Galatians 5:20-21, those who practice such things will not inherit the kingdom of God. There is no place for sorcery, false numbers, fake bosses, corruption, or taking advantage of others through lies and increasing prices, for the Lord desires truth and honest work.

We also hear your anguish over the consequences, the disorder and delay, missing deliveries, provoking strife, mockery, extra bills and extra money demanded, and suffering that has brought you near to the point of hospitalization and grief. We remember the Word that at one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful, and hating one another, Titus 3:3, and we pray that the neighbor caught in this pattern would come to repentance and find deliverance, for God does not desire that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

You said we are not God and we are not agency employees and not obligated to carry this disorder and anxiety and sorcery between neighbors, and you are right that we are not God. Vengeance belongs to Him alone. Do not repay anyone evil for evil, Romans 12:17, and do not avenge yourselves, beloved, but give place to God's wrath, for it is written, Vengeance belongs to me, I will repay, says the Lord, Romans 12:19. He is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble, Psalm 46:1. Yet while we are not God, we are called to be His people who seek peace and pursue it, Psalm 34:14, and as much as it is possible, if it is possible, as much as it depends on you, be at peace with all men, Romans 12:18. We are called not to return gossip for gossip, for let no corrupt speech proceed out of your mouth, but only what is good for building others up as the need may be, that it may give grace to those who hear, Ephesians 4:29, and the tongue is a fire that can defile the whole body, James 3:6.

We notice that your request did not mention the name of Jesus Christ, and we gently remind you that it is only through Him that we have access to the Father. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me, John 14:6, and there is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved, Acts 4:12. If we confess with our mouth that Jesus is Lord, and believe in our heart that God raised Him from the dead, we will be saved, Romans 10:9. So we come boldly only in His name.

We pray together now. Father in heaven, in the name of Jesus Christ we come before You and we lift up this situation of oppression by a neighbor who is idle and meddling and spreading gossip and discord. Lord, we rebuke the spirit of laziness, voyeurism, slander, mockery, sorcery, and confusion, and we ask You to silence the lying lips and the disrespectful pictures and the distribution of false information. We ask You to protect this household from spying, from bullying, from the destruction of reputation, and from the war of distraction and disorder. Lord, heal the wounds of suffering, grief, loss, and hospitalization, and provide for every extra bill and financial burden that has been unjustly added, for You are our provider and our defender. Bring order where there is disorder, truth where there are lies, and peace where there is confusion. Convict this neighbor of sin and bring them to repentance and to honest work, that they may work with their own hands as You command, 1 Thessalonians 4:11, and that they may no longer be a busybody in other people's matters, 1 Peter 4:15. Give wisdom to set godly boundaries, to not be drawn into strife, to document what is needed, to seek rightful help from proper authorities when necessary, and to forgive as You have forgiven us, while leaving justice in Your hands. Guard our hearts from hatred and from becoming what we oppose, and let no root of bitterness spring up. We trust You to be our shield and our vindication. We ask all this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, Amen.

We hear how exhausting this has become with neighbors watching and talking, spreading pictures and wrong information, and you left to carry the fallout of confusion, extra bills and even a hospital stay. Being mocked while you are grieving and trying to recover is a lot to hold, and it makes sense you feel wrung out and on edge.

What stood out to us is the clarity you named at the end, that you are not God and you are not required to defend or carry what belongs to others. That is a healthy and true distinction. In our lives a boundary is simply like a property line. It helps us know what is ours to own, our values, time, energy and choices, and what is not ours to fix or absorb, even when others try to push it onto us.

When gossip and meddling keep pulling you in, one small way to practice that line is to give yourself permission to step back. That can look like not answering the gossip, keeping interactions brief, and letting a trusted person, perhaps a pastor, elder or other wise neighbor, help you hold the line instead of facing it alone. You do not have to confront everything at once.

We also notice you mentioned a long hospitalization and ongoing suffering. If that strain continues, please stay connected to your medical providers alongside prayer.

Father, we lift this neighbor situation and the weariness it has caused. Grant wisdom to know what to answer and what to leave alone, protection for reputation and home, and healing and peace after so much loss and medical hardship. Your sorrow and burden have been heard, and there is much in your words that shows how deeply the tongue of slander and the waste of idle hands can wound a household.

The Scriptures you have quoted speak truly. Idolatry, sorcery, hatred, rivalry, jealousy, outbursts of fury, selfishness, dissensions, factions, envy and the like are works of the flesh, and those who live in them will not inherit the kingdom of God. At one time we too were foolish, disobedient, deceived and enslaved by all kinds of passions and pleasures, living in malice and envy, being hated and hating one another. This is the old nature at work. Some professors spend far too much time in one another's houses, wasting precious hours in idle gossip and chatter, and where idleness and laziness rule, the tongue becomes a fire that distributes disrespect, breeds discord, destroys reputation and sows confusion.

You speak also of hospitalization, of extra bills and extra burdens, of suffering that has brought you near to the cemetery, and of mockery that cuts to the quick. The false tongue is so ingenious in slander that it has touched the most tender part of our character and has cut us to the quick. Are we to believe that this is also, in some sense, of the Lord? Assuredly we are. If it is not of the Lord, then it is a matter for despair. Yet this truth is your comfort, for if the Lord permits the trial, the Lord can restrain it and sanctify it. There is no grief which the Holy Spirit cannot relieve. That Divine Comforter knows so well how to get at the secret springs of our sorrow and to put the comfort right into the spring itself. He foresees that the backslider in heart will be filled with his own ways, and grieves because He foresees the backslider's grief, and His grief is for your sake, that you may be kept and healed.

Know also the origin of this conflict. Since the Spirit of God and the spirit of evil must fight, so the two principles within which are their children must continue in conflict till our dying day. As he was yet a coming, the devil threw him down and tore him. The comer to Christ often feels the tearing most sharply. If Satan is trying to tear you, tell him it is written, He is able to save to the uttermost all who come unto God by Him, that whosoever cometh He will in no wise cast out. You are not God, and you are not called to defend or to carry what only God can carry. Let us lay aside every weight, the weight of sin, the weight of care, the weight of grief, the weight of worldliness and everything else that might hinder us, and let us run well looking unto Jesus.

Therefore do not take vengeance into your own hands, nor answer gossip with gossip. Do not cry, Not so, Lord, but let the Lord appoint what He knows best, whether it be care or calumny, sickness or slander, for He knows best. Many have felt the rod of slander before you, and you need not think a strange thing has happened to you. Rather make straight paths for your feet, lest that which is lame be turned out of the way but let it rather be healed. Have you not been backward in interceding for the conversion of your neighbor? Could you read the story of Abraham interceding for Sodom and say that you have interceded for your neighbor like that? The Lord calls you to pray for those who misuse you, that they may be turned from malice and envy to repentance.

O Lord, holy and merciful Father, we rebuke before Thee the spirit of gossip, slander, malice, envy, idleness and sorcery, with all dissension and faction and deceit. Put a bridle upon every lying tongue and restrain every voyeur who meddles in another's house. Forgive where we have grieved Thy Holy Spirit, whose holy character is vexed with unholiness, and cleanse us from all works of the flesh. Thou seest the disorder, the disaster, the delay, the missing provision, the war of distraction, the extra bills and the long suffering that has led near to the grave. Thou art not unmindful of the financial burden and the bodily affliction. Have mercy and grant deliverance, healing, honest provision and peace within the home and among neighbors. Turn the idle to honest labor, turn the gossiping tongue to truth, turn mockery to fear of Thy name. Keep Thy people from taking Thy place, and teach us to cast all our anxiety upon Thee, for Thou carest for us. Strengthen feeble knees, lift up the downcast, and let no grief elude Thy comfort. Bring even those who now do evil to see their need of Christ, who alone saves, that they may come and be in no wise cast out. We ask this not for our own vindication only, but that Thy name may be hallowed and Thy peace may reign. In the name of Jesus Christ our only Savior, Amen.
