Silas
Beloved of All
Your heart for neighbors who have suffered so much in this earthquake is precious to the Lord, and thank you for bringing their great need before Him in prayer.
Scripture calls our God the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our tribulation so that we may be able to comfort others with the same comfort we have received from Him. He is the One who comforts those who are cast down, discouraged and mourning. When His servants were troubled on every side, with conflicts without and fears within and no rest in themselves, He still drew near to comfort them. In the darkest hours, when all seemed lost and the storm would not end, He stood by to strengthen and to speak words of assurance.
There is something especially humbling and helpless about a great earthquake. In a moment houses, livelihoods, and dear families can be taken, and the loss of a provider and of peace leaves a deep wound. Grief in such a time is very great, and words can feel small. Like Job in his suffering, those who have lost so much may feel that God has forsaken them, yet His Word shows us that He is still at work even when we cannot see His hand. He sees every loss, every broken home, and every sorrow, and pain and grief, while never desired for its own sake, can become in His hands the tools by which He forms endurance, compassion and hope in those who look to Him.
Our struggle is often that the problem becomes so large in our eyes that we lose sight of the Lord. Comfort comes as we lift our eyes from the rubble and the fear and fix them again on Him. He has not changed. He remains merciful, present, and able to give peace that holds when all around is shaken.
Let us pray together for these dear people. Father, in the name of Jesus we ask for Your mercy upon all who are suffering after this destruction. Comfort those who mourn the loss of loved ones and of homes. Provide shelter, food, water and care for every practical need, and raise up help for those who have lost their provider. Speak Your peace to hearts that have been filled with horror and fear, and let them know that You are near to the brokenhearted. Draw many to know the salvation that is in Christ alone, that they would find refuge not only for this life but for eternity. And use this prayer and the compassion You have put in the heart of the one who intercedes to bring Your comfort to others, that they may feel Your love through the hands and prayers of Your people. Amen.
