Needing prayer

Beloved of All
Hi. Years ago as a teenager I lied, not knowing it was going to HURT people. As an adult I don't like myself much due to this. I'm not that teenager any longer. I am constantly thinking about how I'd hurt innocent people and am so ashamed. I know that I'm forgiven through the Blood, but I'm unable to forgive myself. Please pray in Jesus's name.

We hear the deep sorrow in your heart, and we come before the Lord with you, lifting up this burden of shame and self-condemnation. The weight you carry is real, but we must remind you, and ourselves, that the blood of Jesus was shed not only for the forgiveness of sins but also for the freedom from guilt that can chain us long after repentance. Scripture tells us, "If we confess our sins, he is faithful and righteous to forgive us the sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness" (1 John 1:9). You have confessed, and God has forgiven. Yet, you are still holding onto what He has released.

The enemy would love for you to remain trapped in this cycle of shame, whispering that you are defined by your past mistakes. But the Word of God declares, "Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation. The old things have passed away. Behold, all things have become new" (2 Corinthians 5:17). You are not that teenager anymore, you are a child of God, redeemed and made new. The fact that you are grieved by your past is evidence of the Holy Spirit’s work in your heart, convicting you of righteousness, not condemning you (John 16:8). But conviction from God leads to repentance and restoration, while condemnation from the enemy leads to despair. We must reject the latter.

We also want to gently point out that your struggle with self-forgiveness may stem from a misunderstanding of grace. You mentioned knowing you are forgiven through the blood, but forgiveness is not something we earn, it is a gift we receive by faith. If God, who is perfect in justice and holiness, has chosen to forgive you, who are you to withhold forgiveness from yourself? Jesus Himself said, "For if you forgive men their trespasses, your heavenly Father will also forgive you. But if you don’t forgive men their trespasses, neither will your Father forgive your trespasses" (Matthew 6:14-15). This includes forgiving yourself. Holding onto guilt is a form of pride, as if your sin is too great for the cross. But the cross was sufficient for all sin, past, present, and future.

Let us pray for you now:

Heavenly Father, we come before You in the mighty name of Jesus, the name above every name, the name by which we are saved and set free. Lord, we lift up our brother/sister who is carrying the heavy burden of shame and self-condemnation. We thank You that You have already forgiven them, that the blood of Jesus has washed away their sin, and that they stand before You righteous and clean. Father, we ask that You break the chains of guilt that the enemy has used to keep them bound. Remind them of Your truth: that they are a new creation, that their past does not define them, and that Your love for them is unshakable.

Lord, we rebuke the spirit of condemnation that has been whispering lies to them. We declare that there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus (Romans 8:1). We ask that You fill them with Your peace, the peace that surpasses all understanding, and that You replace their shame with the joy of Your salvation. Help them to see themselves through Your eyes, as Your beloved child, redeemed and restored. Teach them to extend the same grace to themselves that You have so freely given. We pray for healing in their heart and mind, that they would walk in the freedom You have purchased for them.

Father, we also ask that You bring opportunities for them to make amends where possible, not out of guilt, but out of a heart that desires to reflect Your love and restoration. If there are relationships that need healing, give them the courage and wisdom to seek reconciliation in a way that honors You. And if the past cannot be undone, help them to trust that You will use even their mistakes for Your glory and their growth.

We thank You, Lord, that You are faithful to complete the good work You have begun in them (Philippians 1:6). Strengthen them to walk in the victory that is theirs in Christ. In Jesus’ precious name, we pray. Amen.

We encourage you to meditate on these truths daily. Write down Scriptures that speak to your identity in Christ and declare them over yourself. When the enemy brings up your past, respond with the Word: "I have been crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me. That life which I now live in the flesh, I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me, and gave himself up for me" (Galatians 2:20). You are not your sin, you are a child of God, and He delights in you.

If you have not already, consider sharing your struggle with a trusted believer or pastor who can walk with you in accountability and prayer. Sometimes, speaking these things aloud in a safe, godly community can help break the power of shame. And remember, God is not done with you. He is using even this season of struggle to draw you closer to Him and to shape you into the person He created you to be. Keep pressing into Him.

We hear how heavy this has been to carry for so long, and we appreciate your honesty in sharing it. To know you did harm as a teenager, to have grown and changed since then, and still hear those looping thoughts about innocent people being hurt, that kind of shame can be exhausting.

What you described makes a lot of sense to us, that you know you are forgiven through the blood of Jesus and yet you still struggle to release yourself. In our experience those are often two different things. One is a settled decision to receive forgiveness and to stop demanding punishment of yourself. The other is the slower quieting of emotions like resentment toward yourself, bitterness and fear, which does not always catch up right away and can rise and fall with mood and memory. Feeling ashamed does not mean the forgiveness was not real, and it does not mean you are still that teenager.

When those thoughts circle, it can help not to sit with them alone. If you have a trusted pastor or counselor, consider bringing this one burden to them in person so you are not carrying the replay by yourself. In the moment the memory comes, you might simply name it quietly as a memory, not your identity today, and tell the Lord again that you receive what He has already given.

Father, we lift our brother to You. You know the lie told years ago and the sorrow he still feels for those who were hurt. Thank You that he is not who he was then and that Your forgiveness covers him. Give him rest from constant self-condemnation, teach him to live in the forgiveness he has received, and guide his steps in Your mercy and peace. In Jesus' name, amen.

Your honest confession is heard, and I thank you for the tender conscience which the Lord has wrought within you. To feel shame for the hurt caused by a lie spoken in youth, and to grieve that innocent persons were wounded by it, is itself a sign that grace has been at work. Mark what I have so often preached, that when the Son removes guilt, the Spirit removes guile. The very fact that you say, I am not that teenager any longer, is evidence that at the same time blessedness was bestowed and guilt was taken away, you underwent a change of nature. The old guile is forsaken because the old guilt is forgiven.

You write that you know you are forgiven through the Blood, yet you are unable to forgive yourself. Hear then what Scripture declares, for forgiveness is a divine forgiveness. God says, I, even I, am he that blotteth out thy transgressions. It is not your forgiveness of yourself that cleanses you, but His. There is forgiveness with Him, and that forgiveness is complete. As soon as a soul trusts in the crucified Christ, all sins are forgiven, whether past, present, or to come. The one pardon avails for them as well as for the past. Suppose you call upon your creditor and say, I have nothing to pay with, He does not ask a part payment from your own feelings, He gives an absolute forgiveness of the debt and promises oblivion to it.

Do not let the whisper of despair keep you in bondage. There is forgiveness. Let that whisper drive away those grim shapes of despair into the sea of forgetfulness. Where God draws no limit, do not you draw any. He does not say there is forgiveness for this sin or for that, but there is forgiveness. However sinful the life may have been, there is forgiveness even for you, and that forgiveness is to be obtained from God through Jesus Christ His Son, and it is an eternal forgiveness. The gifts and calling of God are without repentance. He never plays fast and loose with men.

And I would caution you, as I have warned others, do not bring against yourself a morbid self accusation which is not true in God's sight. It is right to have a lowly estimate of yourself, for self abhorrence endears Christ to the heart as the great Savior of unworthy ones, but to refuse the comfort of His pardon because you cannot pardon yourself is to set your feelings above His promise. The qualification for pardon is guilt, and the qualification for His fullness is your emptiness, that is all. Cast your guilty self on Christ and rest there.

You need not live in constant self condemnation, rending your garments when the Lord bids you rend your heart before Him. Confess the sin anew to the Lord, thank Him that the blood of Christ has covered it, and then believe the forgiveness of sins for yourself, as a man believes the Creed with personal trust.

Let us pray together.

O Lord our God, with whom there is forgiveness that Thou mayest be feared, we bless Thee that Thou hast not left the question of pardon open and doubtful, but hast given Thy Son, the Just for the unjust, to bring us to Thyself. We thank Thee that Thou art He that blotteth out transgression for Thine own sake. Look upon this soul who grieves over sins of youth, who knows the pardon of the Blood yet is cast down by shame. Speak that blessed and comprehensive sentence in power, Thy sins are forgiven thee, without condition, without reserve. Grant faith to receive what grace has provided, and let the knowledge of complete and eternal forgiveness lift the burden of self reproach. Create a quiet conscience, a heart at rest in Christ, and a life that shows the new nature Thou hast given. Keep this dear one from the snare of morbid accusation, and make Christ more precious through a humble walk before Thee. In the name of Jesus Christ our only hope and Savior we ask it. Amen.

Heal Me Lord Jesus Spirit, Soul, And Body

Thank you for sharing this burden so honestly. The sorrow you feel over the hurt your words caused as a teenager shows that God has been at work in your heart, bringing you to see sin for what it is and to desire what is right. That awareness itself is a grace, and it can lead not to endless shame but to deeper gratitude.

Scripture teaches that blessed are those whose iniquities are forgiven and whose sins are covered. When God forgives, shame is removed and glory is given in its place. Forgiveness does not come because we work hard enough to earn it or because we finally feel good enough about ourselves. It comes through the blood of Jesus Christ alone, who bore our sins and carried them to the Father not to condemn us but to obtain our pardon. To heal a body is a great thing, but to forgive the sins of a soul is far greater, and Christ has done that greater work for all who trust in Him.

You say you know you are forgiven through His blood yet you cannot forgive yourself. It is important to see that there is no second forgiveness you must give yourself beyond receiving His. If God, the only righteous Judge, has declared you forgiven, to keep punishing yourself is to live as if His verdict were not enough. What He asks is that you tell Him your offenses plainly, agree with Him about them, and then learn how great His mercy is so that you may become thankful toward your Benefactor. Repentance means turning from that old way with honesty and then walking forward in the assurance that He has washed you clean.

You are not that teenager any longer. God does not call you to live in constant replay of the past, but to live as a new person in Christ. If there is a practical and loving way to make amends to those you hurt without causing more harm, seek wise counsel about it. If not, commit them to God in prayer and ask Him to bring healing where you cannot reach. Then ask Him to help you renew your mind each day with His promises rather than with accusations.

We will pray for you now.

Father, we lift up this dear one to You in the name of Jesus Christ. You see the shame and the heavy thoughts that return again and again. Thank You that You have not left us in our sin but have provided forgiveness through the blood of Your Son. Help this heart to fully receive what You have already given, to believe that where sin increased grace abounded all the more, and to live in the blessedness of sins forgiven and covered. Teach how to confess honestly and then to walk in gratitude and peace, not in self condemnation. Heal the wounds caused long ago as only You can, and use this life now to show Your mercy to others. Restore joy, give a clear conscience through Christ, and guard the mind with Your truth. In the name of Jesus we pray, amen.
