Disciple of Prayer
I've been a caretaker for the last 6 years for my mother-in-law, who passed away on September 29th. My husband and his brother have been angry that she used her money for their needs instead of her own, before she came to live with us. Her memorial is coming on the 6th of November, and I am making the plans again for everything, and I am exhausted, anxious, and it is a lot to prepare for. I need strength and wisdom to get through this. I have been a caretaker for almost all of my life — for my own mother, my sister, and lately my mother-in-law. I need the strength, or that God can send someone to take over this part. My husband has problems with his own ability to handle family issues, while he is a great organizer for events and programs-- family has always been something difficult for him to understand and know what to do. Help him come to terms with his need to focus on his family, and Lord, send me help! Thank you for the prayers.

We have heard your heart and we join with you in bringing this heavy burden to the Lord together in Jesus' name. You have served faithfully for so many years, caring for your own mother and sister and then for six years as caretaker for your mother-in-law who passed away on September 29th, and now you are carrying the weight of preparing her memorial on November 6th while feeling exhausted and anxious. The Lord sees your faithful service and your weariness, and He does not leave you to carry this alone.

The scripture reminds us, Come to me, all you who labor and are heavily burdened, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you and learn from me, for I am gentle and humble in heart and you will find rest for your souls. Matthew 11:28-29 and He gives power to the weak. He increases the strength of him who has no might. Isaiah 40:29. We are praying that you will experience that rest and that renewed strength even in the midst of all the preparations. In nothing be anxious, but in everything, by prayer and petition with thanksgiving, let your requests be made known to God. And the peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and your thoughts in Christ Jesus. Philippians 4:6-7. We pray that peace over you now as anxiety rises and the list of things to do feels overwhelming.

We also lift up your need for wisdom and for help. But if any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask of God, who gives to all liberally and without reproach, and it will be given to him. James 1:5. We ask the Lord to give you clear wisdom for each decision for the memorial, and to show you what can be released, what can be delegated, and what truly needs your hands. You have asked God to send someone to take over this part, and we join you in that prayer. Bear one another's burdens, and so fulfill the law of Christ. Galatians 6:2. It is not God's will for you to bear this entire burden alone, and we pray He will raise up family, friends, or brothers and sisters in the church to come alongside you practically, to help with planning, meals, setup and support, so you can breathe and grieve as well.

We also bring your husband and his brother before the Lord. We understand that there is anger that your mother-in-law used her money for their needs instead of her own before she came to live with you, and that hurt can linger even after her passing. We gently encourage you all to bring that anger to the Lord and to choose forgiveness, for scripture says Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, outcry, and slander be put away from you, with all malice. And be kind to one another, tender hearted, forgiving each other, just as God also in Christ forgave you. Ephesians 4:31-32. Her resources were hers to steward as she chose, and honoring her memory now with grace will bring more peace than holding onto resentment about money. We pray for your husband, who you describe as a great organizer for events and programs but who struggles to understand and know what to do with family issues. We pray the Lord will help him to step into his role as your husband to love, protect, and support you, and to lead his family with tenderness and understanding in this season of grief. Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the assembly and gave himself up for it. Ephesians 5:25. We pray he will see your exhaustion and come to terms with his need to focus on his family, to share the load of this memorial and to comfort you, and that God will give him a new understanding and courage for family matters that have always been difficult for him.

We notice you closed by saying Lord, send me help, and we want to gently remind you of the precious truth that it is only through the name of Jesus Christ that we have access to the Father and it is only by His name that we are saved. Jesus said, I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father, except through me. John 14:6 and There is salvation in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven that is given among men, by which we must be saved. Acts 4:12. We do not say this to correct you harshly, but to encourage you to call upon the name of Jesus Christ specifically, for He is our mediator, our comforter, and our strength, and He intercedes for us. If you have not already, place your full trust in Jesus Christ, believing that He died for your sins and rose again, and you will have eternal life and daily access to God's throne of grace.

We pray together now.

Father, in the name of Jesus Christ we lift up this dear daughter who is weary from a lifetime of caregiving and from these six years of faithful service to her mother-in-law. You have seen every sleepless night, every act of love, every sacrifice, and we thank You for her faithful heart. Lord, give her Your strength for today and for the days leading to November 6th. When her heart is overwhelmed, lead her to the rock that is higher than she is. Psalm 61:2. Quiet her anxious thoughts with Your peace and give her wisdom for every detail of the memorial, that it may honor her mother-in-law's life and bring comfort to all who gather. Father, send help. Send people who will come alongside her to carry this preparation, to encourage her, and to allow her to rest. Heal the grief in her heart and in the hearts of her husband and his brother, and help them to release any bitterness about finances and to forgive as You have forgiven us. Lord, work in her husband's heart, give him eyes to see his wife's need, give him understanding for family, give him the desire and ability to step in, to organize and to support with love, and to be a source of strength to his wife in this time. We cast all our anxiety on You because You care for us. 1 Peter 5:7. Let Your grace be sufficient and let Your power be made perfect in weakness. We ask all of this in the mighty and saving name of Jesus Christ, our Lord and our hope. Amen.

We encourage you to let others help you. It is not a failure to ask for help but a biblical pattern of community. Share the memorial tasks with your husband, his brother, extended family, or your church family, even small tasks. Take time to rest, to pray, to eat and sleep, and to grieve yourself. The Lord is not measuring the perfection of the event but sees your heart of honor. He will carry you through, and He will provide the strength and the helpers you need.

We have been thinking of you as you carry so much right now. Losing your mother-in-law on September 29 after six years of daily care is a deep loss, and to be the one planning the memorial for November 6 while still grieving and untangling family hurt about finances would leave anyone exhausted and anxious.

When someone has been a caregiver for most of their life as you have, for your mother and sister and then your mother-in-law, that weariness is not a personal failure. It is often a slow buildup from years of putting others needs first with little rest, and it makes sense you are asking God for strength and for someone to come alongside you.

One small step that has helped others in this season is to name one piece of the memorial that you do not have to carry alone and invite one trusted person to take it completely. Your husband may find it easier to step in with practical organizing, which you mentioned is a strength for him, while a friend, church member, or other family member handles another detail. Letting one or two tasks leave your list can create a little breathing room to rest and grieve.

We are also praying for your husband as he processes family tensions in his own way, and that the Lord will surround you both with wise, kind support in the weeks ahead. If the exhaustion and anxiety feel heavy or linger, we encourage you to reach out to your pastor and to your doctor for care alongside prayer.

Father, we lift this sister to You in Jesus name. Give her rest for her body and quiet for her mind as she prepares for this memorial, provide faithful helpers to share the load, and guide her and her husband with wisdom and unity in the days ahead. Amen.

There comes a time when human strength spends itself, and you have come to such a season. For six years you have kept watch as a caretaker, and indeed for a great portion of your life you have borne the burden of caring for your mother, your sister, and lately your mother in law whom the Lord has now taken home on September the twenty ninth. It is no wonder that you feel exhausted and anxious as you prepare for her memorial on the sixth of November, for all strength apart from God is derived strength and must in due time fail.

The word of the Lord meets you in this very faintness. It is written, They that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength. The promise is not to those who have might of their own, but to those who have no might, for to them He increases strength. When there remains no strength in you, nor any ability of any kind, then is the time to fling yourself upon the Divine strength and lay hold upon it. God Himself says, I will strengthen them, and therefore it will be fitly infused and wisely balanced. The glory of your strength, if you have any, lies not in yourself but in God alone, who is the Author of all being and the inexhaustible fountain of power.

You ask for wisdom to get through these days and for help to bear what remains to be done. True wisdom is to trust in God and to wait upon Him. Our very weakness becomes our strength because it drives us to the Almighty. He has not forgotten you. He has engraved His people upon the palms of His hands, and He keeps that memorial present with Him. As you make a memorial for one you have loved and served, remember that the Lord keeps His own memorial of you, permanent and present, and He will not forget your labour of love.

We will pray for you, and we pray with you now.

O Lord our God, who gives power to the faint, look upon this Thy servant who is weary with long watching and much serving. Renew her strength as she waits upon Thee. Grant her wisdom for every preparation for the memorial, and quiet her anxious heart with Thy peace. Where she has no more might, be Thou her might. Send help to her side, whether by the hand of family or friends or by Thine own providence, that she may not bear this burden alone. Work also in her husband, that Thou wouldst give him understanding and tenderness toward his family in this hour of grief, and help him to take up his part with faithfulness and love. Teach them both to trust Thee together, and to find that to wait upon Thee is to find strength renewed like the eagle's. Through Jesus Christ our Lord, who bore our infirmities and carries us when we cannot walk, Amen.
