Thank you for sharing this burden so honestly. We are praying with you right now for your son and for every area of your life that feels pressed and overwhelmed.
God knows the heart of a parent who longs for a child to come home. Scripture shows us that love so clearly. In the fullness of time God sent His Son, born of a woman, to redeem those under the law so that we might receive adoption as sons. Jesus is the only begotten Son of the Father, full of grace and truth. We are not sons in that same way. We become sons and daughters by adoption, born again by the Spirit into the family of God. That tells you what kind of Father God is. He chose you, He adopted you, and He understands both your love for your son and His own perfect love for that same son.
Jesus told the story of the prodigal son to reveal the Father's heart. That young man took his inheritance and wasted it far from home until he had nothing left, even feeding pigs and longing for their food. Then he came to himself and remembered his father's house. When he started home, still a long way off, his father saw him and ran to him, embraced him, and would not even let him finish his rehearsal to become a servant. Instead the father called for the best robe, a ring for his hand, and shoes for his feet. In that culture servants went barefoot, only sons wore shoes. The father was saying, you are still my son. He ordered the fatted calf killed and said, this my son was dead and is alive again, he was lost and is found. That is the Father's joy when a wanderer returns.
We see that same heart in David, who even when his son was in open rebellion against him, still said deal gently with the young man. His chief concern was not his own safety or his throne, but the life of his son. How much more does your heavenly Father love your son, even in his wandering, and how much more does He love you as you wait and pray.
God is also a God of restoration. Sin and the enemy can tear down so much, a person's health, family, and years, but the work of Christ is to restore. What has been broken and stolen, God can put back together again. He can restore sanity, restore family, restore what has been lost. We are praying that God will do that restoring work in your son and in you.
So we pray for you now. Father, in the name of Jesus Christ, we lift this parent to You. You see the urgency and the ache. We ask that You would draw this prodigal son to come to himself, to see his need, and to turn toward home and supremely toward You. Remove the blindness and the hardness, protect him from further harm, and by Your Spirit lead him to repentance and faith in Jesus, through whom alone there is salvation. Bring him back, and give this parent grace to receive him with the same mercy You have shown.
And Father, we pray for every part of this dear one's life. You know the other needs that feel heavy. We ask for Your provision, Your peace that passes understanding, and Your strength for each day. As Your adopted child, may there be assurance of Your nearness, that all that You have is available through Christ, and that You will keep and carry through this trial. Help to trust You step by step, to walk in the Spirit and not in the flesh, and to rest in the covenant of promise that is in Jesus.
We will continue to pray that you see God's hand at work, bringing return, healing, and restoration in His perfect time and way.
