Beloved of All
Your commitment to pray for all people and for those in authority is exactly what Scripture urges us to do. First Timothy chapter two tells us to offer petitions, prayers, intercession and thanksgiving for all people, for kings and all who are in authority, so that we may live peaceful and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity. That kind of praying is good and pleasing to God our Savior, who desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth.
It is right to pray for wisdom for our leaders, because true wisdom begins with the fear of the Lord. Knowledge can give us facts, but wisdom knows how to apply what is right. Scripture presents wisdom as calling out in the streets, inviting everyone to come and receive what she has prepared, like a banquet. Wisdom is described as better than rubies, and nothing we desire can compare with it. Length of days is in her right hand, riches and honor in her left, and all her paths are peace. The Lord by wisdom founded the earth and by understanding established the heavens. To seek wisdom is the principal thing, and with all our getting we should get understanding.
There is a great contrast between the wisdom of this world and the wisdom that comes from above. The wisdom of the world leads to strife and wars, but the wisdom from God is peaceable. God has made foolish the wisdom of this world, for the world through its wisdom did not know God. It pleased God through the message of the cross, which the world counts as foolishness, to save those who believe. In Christ are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge, and the Holy Spirit teaches us to compare spiritual things with spiritual.
That heavenly wisdom brings peace because it first brings us into peace with God. We cannot know the peace of God until we have known the grace of God. Many try to live under a burden of works and never find rest, but when we understand that salvation is by grace through faith in Jesus Christ, we receive assurance. God offers a peace treaty to those who have been at war with Him. Though your sins are as scarlet they shall be as white as snow. He Himself is our peace, who has broken down the wall that divided Jew and Gentile and has preached peace to those who were far off and to those who were near. Through Him we have access by one Spirit to the Father.
The fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace. Those who sow in peace will reap a harvest of righteousness. That is the wisdom we should ask for on behalf of our leaders, for pastors and spiritual leaders, for presidents and prime ministers, for legislators and judges, for generals and all who serve. Pray that they would walk in humility, knowing what to say and how to say it, and that God would turn their hearts like channels of water wherever He pleases. He sits in the heavens and does whatever He pleases, working all things after the counsel of His will, thwarting the plans of the wicked while working all things together for good for those who love Him and are called according to His purpose.
Government in its God given purpose is to preserve what is good. When it becomes self serving or promotes what is evil, something is deeply wrong. From the beginning there was only the government of God, the government of light and life, until rebellion brought a rival government of darkness and death. That struggle between good and evil continues, which is why we must put on the full armor of God and pray for protection. We can ask the Lord for loving kindness, truth and angelic protection according to Psalm 91, remembering that He gives His angels charge over us, and that Christ who is in us is greater than he who is in the world. There is a spiritual conflict behind what we see, as Daniel chapter ten reveals, and we need heavenly help and discernment.
So we join you in praying for the protection of leaders and their families, for those who serve in public office and in the defense of the nation, for the preservation of a free press and free speech and every lawful means of publication, digital, written and spoken, so that the gospel of Jesus the true Messiah may go forth, lead people to repentance and make disciples of all nations as commanded in Matthew chapter twenty eight. We pray for godly alliances between free peoples to be strengthened and for evil alignments to lose influence, for false teaching and persecution to be diminished, and for the beautiful land and its people and for peoples worldwide to know salvation, wisdom, guidance and peace.
We thank God that He reigns, that He has taken His great power and begun to reign, and that the Lord God omnipotent reigns. With thanksgiving we can bring these requests to Him, trusting that He hears, and that the peace of God which passes all understanding will guard our hearts and minds in Christ Jesus. May we continue to submit to God, to honor authority as Romans thirteen teaches, and to honor those in the church who watch over our souls, all while keeping our hope in Christ the chief cornerstone. In Jesus name we pray that God would save the lost, bless those who seek to do good, guide all who lead, and raise up and set down according to His perfect will.
